With senior stars returning, Proteas are ‘raring to go' against Aussies
After taking an under-strength squad to Zimbabwe last month, head coach Shukri Conrad says he is pleased to have some senior players returning to the Proteas team for his second tour in charge as national white-ball mentor.
With a handful of players having been rested after the SA team's victory in the World Test Championship final in June, the majority of them (those who are fit and injury-free) will be back for the three-match T20 International series against Australia starting in Darwin on Sunday.
'It's great having the experience back, obviously with Aiden's (Proteas T20 captain Aiden Markram) leadership and the leadership roles that someone like Kagiso (Rabada) plays,' Conrad said.
'So I'm really excited about the next couple of weeks. We know it's going to be a great challenge but the guys are raring to go.'
Building up to World Cup
Having replaced former limited overs coach Rob Walter earlier this year, Conrad said he was trying to juggle various goals with one eye on the T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
While he had given younger players a chance to impress in the T20 tri-series against New Zealand and Zimbabwe last month, Conrad said the series in Australia (and other upcoming campaigns against strong opposition) would give him a better idea of squad selection ahead of the global showpiece.
'For me it's really about developing, winning, and then potentially getting to what our best squad is for the conditions in India,' Conrad said.
'So I think these tours have great value for me as a new head coach and for the coaching staff, and obviously for the players.'

Bok Women bank on experience in naming squad for Women's Rugby World Cup
Nolusindiso Booi, centre, the Springbok Women's most experienced Test captain, will once again lead the team at 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup in England. Nolusindiso Booi, the most-capped Springbok Women's player, will lead a strong, experienced South African squad boasting a combined 689 Test caps to the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup in England in a few weeks' time. Bok Women's head coach Swys de Bruin's squad for the World Cup – where South Africa will face Brazil, Italy and France in Pool D – was named at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday. Booi, who captained the squad at the previous tournament in New Zealand in 2022, is also South Africa's most experienced Test captain, having led the side in 23 Tests. She said she was excited to have made the cut. 'We know the work needs to start again because we've been working so hard until now. We've been prepared enough and we did have a couple of games where we did have a crowd, because that is one of the things that are making people nervous when they reach that stage,' she said. Babalwa Latsha, who captained the Bok Women in 14 Test matches as well as in the recent Black Ferns XV series, was named as vice-captain. Booi and Tayla Kinsey are the most experienced players in the squad, with 19 of the 32 players boasting previous World Cup experience. Eight of the 19 forwards will be experiencing a Women's Rugby World Cup for the first time. Four of the 13 backs will represent South Africa on this level for the first time. All 32 players selected for the Women's Rugby World Cup featured either against Spain in April, the Rugby Africa Women's Cup, the two Tests against Canada in July, or the two recent internationals against the Black Ferns XV, which was a telling factor in their final selection, according to De Bruin.

After successful conditioning camp, Springboks turn attention to Australia
'We will be going up against quality teams in the Wallabies, All Blacks and Pumas, so it was important to lay a strong foundation on and off the field before we go into full Test-match week from Sunday. 'We are approaching the tournament in three blocks, the first of which is the leg against Australia and we have no doubt they will want to build on their performances in their past two matches against the British & Irish Lions. 'Similarly, we would like to continue building momentum and our results in the Castle Lager Incoming Series, though we are under no illusions about the challenges these teams will pose. 'We are excited for the challenge ahead and we are looking forward to returning to the field next week.'

Lhuan-dre Pretorius soaks up Proteas wisdom as he prepares for Aussie hostility
Proteas batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius is excited to learn from senior players, including Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram, as he goes on tour for the first time with the full-strength team in Australia. Pretorius, 19, has already made a name for himself in South Africa, having made light work of domestic cricket on graduating from schoolboy cricket. For his dominance in first-class cricket this past season, the left-handed batter earned the Cricket South Africa Four-Day Series Player of the Year award at Emperor's Palace in Johannesburg last week. The youngster has already donned the Proteas colours as he earned his Test and T20I debuts in Zimbabwe last month, where he also impressed with 150 on his Test debut and one half-century in T20Is. His numbers have seen him earn a spot in the Proteas' full-strength team that is in Australia for three T20Is and three ODIs starting later this week. Pretorius is on tour with Proteas household names, including T20I captain Aiden Markram, fast bowler Kagiso Rabada and Temba Bavuma, who will join the squad for the ODI series. Lhuan-dré Pretorius earns his maiden T20I cap for the Proteas Men! 🇿🇦🧢 From rising through the ranks with fearless stroke play and electrifying energy to donning the green and gold on the international stage 🔥🏏💪. #WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) July 15, 2025 In an exclusive interview with Pretorius revealed he is excited to become a sponge in the squad and absorb as much information as possible from the seasoned professionals. 'With the likes of KG, Temba, Aiden, [Ryan] Rickleton, all of those guys, I'm just super excited to learn and see how they play the game, how they see the game, how they speak, paying attention to how they do things that maybe can benefit me,' said Pretorius. 'Obviously, everyone's a different player, but you can take a little bit from each player and build your own legacy, if that makes sense.' Australia is often a tough country to tour. The fans are passionate about their team and can be harsh to visiting teams and players. Similarly, the Australian team is known for playing hard, adopting a 'bully' mentality on the field. For a youngster such as Pretorius, this could be a challenge. However, Pretorius is fully aware of what could come in the next few weeks playing in Australia and is prepared. Lhuan-dré Pretorius reflects on a dream debut: an unforgettable maiden Test century. 💯🔥 From nerves to glory, our young star stood tall on the big stage and delivered with class, composure, and character. 💪🇿🇦 #WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) June 30, 2025 The left-handed batter said chirping on the field brings out the best in him and the noise off the field doesn't have an impact on him. 'The media and the stuff that happens off the field, I don't really care about that stuff because I don't really look into that kind of stuff, but the on-the-field chirping, it does get me going,' said Pretorius. 'I do enjoy that quite a bit because it keeps me in the fight, and it just gives me another reason not to give my wicket away. I don't really care about what's going on off the field in terms of other people's perspectives and that kind of stuff. 'You don't want to overthink it. At the end of the day, it's bat against ball. It's not Lhuan-dre against another player, it's bat against ball and that helps you a lot. You do your thing, there's a reason you're playing there and there's a reason you got there. So just backing the processes, backing what's got you there. That's my mindset and how I do it.' The T20I series is set to run from Sunday to August 16, while the ODI series will run from August 19 to 24.
