With senior stars returning, Proteas are ‘raring to go' against Aussies
After taking an under-strength squad to Zimbabwe last month, head coach Shukri Conrad says he is pleased to have some senior players returning to the Proteas team for his second tour in charge as national white-ball mentor.
With a handful of players having been rested after the SA team's victory in the World Test Championship final in June, the majority of them (those who are fit and injury-free) will be back for the three-match T20 International series against Australia starting in Darwin on Sunday.
'It's great having the experience back, obviously with Aiden's (Proteas T20 captain Aiden Markram) leadership and the leadership roles that someone like Kagiso (Rabada) plays,' Conrad said.
'So I'm really excited about the next couple of weeks. We know it's going to be a great challenge but the guys are raring to go.'
Building up to World Cup
Having replaced former limited overs coach Rob Walter earlier this year, Conrad said he was trying to juggle various goals with one eye on the T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
While he had given younger players a chance to impress in the T20 tri-series against New Zealand and Zimbabwe last month, Conrad said the series in Australia (and other upcoming campaigns against strong opposition) would give him a better idea of squad selection ahead of the global showpiece.
'For me it's really about developing, winning, and then potentially getting to what our best squad is for the conditions in India,' Conrad said.
'So I think these tours have great value for me as a new head coach and for the coaching staff, and obviously for the players.'

She said she was excited to have made the cut. 'We know the work needs to start again because we've been working so hard until now. Babalwa Latsha, who captained the Bok Women in 14 Test matches as well as in the recent Black Ferns XV series, was named as vice-captain. Booi and Tayla Kinsey are the most experienced players in the squad, with 19 of the 32 players boasting previous World Cup experience. Eight of the 19 forwards will be experiencing a Women's Rugby World Cup for the first time. Four of the 13 backs will represent South Africa on this level for the first time. All 32 players selected for the Women's Rugby World Cup featured either against Spain in April, the Rugby Africa Women's Cup, the two Tests against Canada in July, or the two recent internationals against the Black Ferns XV, which was a telling factor in their final selection, according to De Bruin.

Proteas batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius is excited to learn from senior players, including Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram, as he goes on tour for the first time with the full-strength team in Australia. Pretorius, 19, has already made a name for himself in South Africa, having made light work of domestic cricket on graduating from schoolboy cricket. 'The media and the stuff that happens off the field, I don't really care about that stuff because I don't really look into that kind of stuff, but the on-the-field chirping, it does get me going,' said Pretorius. 'I do enjoy that quite a bit because it keeps me in the fight, and it just gives me another reason not to give my wicket away. I don't really care about what's going on off the field in terms of other people's perspectives and that kind of stuff. 'You don't want to overthink it. At the end of the day, it's bat against ball. It's not Lhuan-dre against another player, it's bat against ball and that helps you a lot. You do your thing, there's a reason you're playing there and there's a reason you got there. So just backing the processes, backing what's got you there. That's my mindset and how I do it.' The T20I series is set to run from Sunday to August 16, while the ODI series will run from August 19 to 24.
