Worrying trend for petrol and diesel prices for South Africa's motorists

The latest available data shows that more good news lies ahead for South Africa's motorists in early June, but the picture is worsening significantly as each day passes.
With just under three weeks until the new prices will come into effect, there is still a chance prices may increase at the pumps next month.
Vehicle owners in Mzansi saw a sizeable decrease in the cost of both petrol and diesel earlier this month.
This was in main due to a lower brent crude oil price and a stronger rand.
However, in recent days, the oil price has risen while the rand-dollar exchange rate has remained largely stable.
Below, the latest projections as received by The South African website from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), effective Wednesday, 14 May. FUEL PRICE CHANGE Petrol 93 decrease of 30 cents Petrol 95 decrease of 30 cents Diesel 0.05% decrease of 60 cents Diesel 0.005% decrease of 61 cents Illuminating Paraffin decrease of 63 cents
If the market conditions were to remain consistent for the remainder of the month – an unlikely scenario with the rand/dollar exchange rate fluctuating and the oil price ever changing – a decrease of 30 cents is expected for petrol 93 octane motorists and a decrease of 30 cents for 95 users.
Meanwhile, diesel motorists would see something between a 60 and 61 cents per litre decrease.
Finally, illuminating paraffin is expected to drop by 63 cents in price. FUEL PRICE IN SOUTH AFRICA IMPACTED BY TWO MAIN FACTORS:
1. The international price of petroleum products, driven mainly by oil prices
2. The rand/dollar exchange rate used in the purchase of these products
Oil price
At the time of publishing the brent crude oil price is $64.08 a barrel.
Exchange rate
At the time of publishing the rand/dollar exchange rate is R18.25/$.
The final overall price changes for both petrol and diesel will be confirmed early next month with the new prices taking effect at midnight on Tuesday, 3 June 2025.
Go easy on the accelerator until then, Mzansi. INLAND May Petrol 93 R21.29 Petrol 95 R21.40 Diesel 0.05% R18.90 Diesel 0.005% R18.94 Illuminating Paraffin R13.05 COASTAL May Petrol 93 R20.50 Petrol 95 R20.61 Diesel 0.05% R18.11 Diesel 0.005% R18.18 Illuminating Paraffin R12.05

Netflix hikes package prices: How much you will now pay

Netflix subscribers are facing higher monthly bills as the global streaming giant implements price increases from June. Image: Netflix South African Netflix subscribers are facing higher monthly bills as the global streaming giant implements price increases across three of its four subscription tiers. The changes, which began rolling out in May 2025, are now in full effect for most users. The new pricing structure sees increases to the Mobile, Standard, and Premium plans, while the Basic plan remains unchanged. This marks Netflix's second price hike in South Africa since its 2016 launch. When South Africans connect, we don't just network; we build a community. The Lekker Network is a professional network where every conversation starts with, 'How can I help you?' Come join us & be a part of a community of extraordinary Saffas. New Netflix South Africa pricing: Mobile : R59/month (up from R49) – +20% : R59/month (up from R49) – Standard : R179/month (up from R159) – +13% : R179/month (up from R159) – Premium : R229/month (up from R199) – +15% : R229/month (up from R199) – Basic: Remains at R99/month Subscribers were notified via email and in-app messages depending on their billing cycles, with the updated prices applying from their next payment date in June. While Netflix has not released an official media statement regarding the change, a note on its website reads: 'Plans and pricing may change as we continue to improve our service and add more TV shows and movies. Adjustments can also happen in response to local market changes, such as changes to local taxes or inflation.' The price hikes come at a time when South African consumers are increasingly sensitive to cost-of-living pressures, with many streaming platforms competing for attention in a saturated market. MultiChoice also upped prices Earlier this year, MultiChoice implemented its own price and product adjustments for DStv and Showmax, signaling a broader industry trend of rising subscription costs as content providers invest more in technology, content rights, and user experience. The unchanged Basic plan offers some relief to budget-conscious subscribers, while the Mobile plan -aimed at single-device viewers – is still Netflix's most affordable option, albeit now 20% more expensive than before. KZN South Coast towns set for new harbour development

Two seaside towns in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) have been confirmed as possible spots for a new small harbour development in the region. As reported by Freight News , Scottburgh and Hibberdene, along with six other locations, form part of a prospective Tier 2 small harbour development. Public Works and Infrastructure Deputy Minister, Sihle Zikalala, announced the plans at the Umdoni Municipality Investment conference held at Scottburgh recently. The KZN South Coast harbour development will reportedly include a boat launching site, fisheries as well as related facilities, and is expected to create thousands of work opportunities in the community. The environmental impact assessment for the harbour project in Hibberdene has also already been completed, highlighting progress in the approval process. Deputy Minister Zikalala said that government was determined to improve economic and social infrastructure such as roads, bridges, dams and fibre networks to support small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs) and industrialisation. 'Working with you, we want to build capacity, including technical, planning and project management capacity, to maintain all public infrastructure, and prioritise it in budgeting. We are determined to provide resources to maintain ageing infrastructure to prevent disasters and loss of life,' the Deputy Minister said at the conference.
