Queen Latifah reveals her first paycheque was just 87 bucks

Perth Now28-06-2025
Queen Latifah's first paycheque was "87 bucks" from Burger King.
The 55-year-old Hollywood actress and rapper - who was born Dana Owens - had humble beginnings flipping burgers at the fast food chain long before she became a global star.
She told First for Women magazine of her first job: "Burger King, at 15 years old: my first check was for 87 bucks."
Now she's in her 50s, the Girls Trip star star feels women should support each other more.
She told the publication: "In our 50s, we have to support each other as women. We don't compliment each other enough, and we should.
"We are more confident in our skin now-more comfortable than we were in our 20s, 30s and 40s. No one should think life is 'over' after a certain age. I still have so many things I want to do! This is the greatest time for women to lock in on their own health-and finally put themselves first."
Meanwhile, the Ladies First hitmaker is set to be the subject of an upcoming biopic and she's excited to be able to tell her own story.
She told The Hollywood Reporter in 2024: 'We've been talking about it for a while.
"We've seen a lot of people tell our stories who weren't there and really have no idea how much more involved these stories are. It's important to see how it all happened from people who were actively in the room."

Zoe Saldana 'honoured' by new Cartier role

Zoe Saldana has joined Cartier as a brand ambassador. The 47-year-old actress has been collaborating with the French jewellery for years now, and the company has described the development as an "exciting new chapter". Cartier's chief marketing officer Arnaud Carrez told WWD: "[Her appointment] celebrates a relationship that has grown over many years and marks an exciting new chapter — one defined by shared creativity and bold expression. 'Her talent, grace and effortless elegance have long resonated with the maison.' The brand added that this culmination of their past collaborations represents "a shared bold creativity". Meanwhile, Zoe is "honoured" to be taking on a greater role with the company. She said: 'I am honored to become an ambassador for Cartier, following many years of warm collaboration. 'I have long been an admirer of the maison's boundary-breaking savoir faire that creates incredible pieces of wearable art, and I look forward to continuing this special relationship.' When it comes to her beauty approach, Zoe recently admitted she's a "sucker" for lip plumpers, and she usually keeps at least "four or five" lip glosses in her hand bag at all times. When asked to list the contents of her purse, she told The Hollywood Reporter: "[There's] at least four or five lip glosses. In the early 2000s and I was introduced to lip plumpers. I am a sucker for them. "I love anything that makes my lips feel tingly! And moisturizer. California can be a really dry place. We love the sun, but there's the perils of sunny California means that your lips are sometimes on the dry side. I like to have a variation of a moisturizer." Zoe previously revealed one of her favourite lip products is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. In a video filmed for Vogue India, she explained: "My lips are always chapped so right now I'm using a really good lip balm."

Tim Burton addresses Beetlejuice 3 reports

Tim Burton has insisted "nobody told him" about plans for Beetlejuice 3. The 66-year-old filmmaker - who directed the original 1988 comedy horror classic and its 2024 sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - has played down speculation that a third movie is definitely on the cards. Earlier this year, Warner Bros Pictures co-chairman/CEO Mike De Luca insisted development on Beetlejuice 3 was "imminent". Upon hearing this, Burton told The Hollywood Reporter: "Really? Nobody told me. Maybe I've been replaced." Jenna Ortega, who appeared in the second film last year, quipped: "Maybe I've been, too. Maybe [her character] Astrid dies and goes to heaven instead [of the films' Netherworld]. "They should just take Baby Beetlejuice on tour and send him to Hawaii." Burton pointed out that there was well over three decades between the first two films in the franchise - which stars Michael Keaton as the wisecracking ghoul - and joked "the odds are not good" for a follow-up any time soon. He said: "It took 35 years to make the second one, so by that time I'll be 105. I know those odds are not good. "I really, really enjoyed making this one, and [Warner Bros.] didn't even really want to do it. "We did it the same way I did the first one, with the actors doing improv. It was beautiful to see some of the old cast and have Jenna. "But it's like trying to re-create the Wednesday dance scene. I love the characters, but I don't necessarily see it." Burton also seemed to shrug off the idea of another director taking over the project, insisting he does feel an ownership over his projects. He added: "I feel very proprietary about everything I do, even if I don't own the characters. "When they did the [Beetlejuice Broadway musical], I got p*****." Meanwhile, Ortega noted she would "never" want to return to the Beetlejuice world without Burton steering the ship. She said: "Oh, I would never. I also think anybody would be really wrong to get behind that project. "Without him involved, what is it? It is what it is because of Tim. "There's no other film you can compare Beetlejuice to. So why would you do that? That would be a tad disrespectful." Back in April, Warner Bros executive De Luca claimed plans were moving along for sequels for both Minecraft and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. He told Deadline: "Imminently. The ink might not be dry on the deals yet, but imminently." De Luca insisted the studio was looking to capitalise on both film's success. He explained: "To have two franchises emerge from our leadership team with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Minecraft, I feel like we're ahead of schedule. "Now we're trying to step on the gas, to double, to quadruple that kind of success."

Jenna Ortega feels 'incredibly misunderstood' due to Hollywood success

Jenna Ortega feels "incredibly misunderstood". The 22-year-old actress is one of the brightest young stars in Hollywood but is uncomfortable with the public making "assumptions" about her personality. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Jenna said: "I think that's part of my struggle with that side of the job, because you feel incredibly misunderstood. "It's almost to a point where it feels like your name doesn't belong to you. I almost don't even resonate with it anymore. "I hate assumptions, and a big part of this job is that people are going to make assumptions about you." The Wednesday star feels that too much information about performers is revealed to the world nowadays. She said: "We know too much. "And the people feel entitled to those bits and pieces of your life where if they were put under the same microscope, they wouldn't feel nearly as comfortable." Jenna explained that she is particularly frightened of people calling out her name in the street and hears "vile things" at times. The star said: "Somebody shouting your name in public is insane. Sometimes I feel uncomfortable when it's grown men approaching me. "Like, you don't stop for somebody because you're going to be late for something and they're calling you a **** w**** in front of your mother. It's horrific." However, Ortega revealed that she can go out in public "unseen" if she wishes. The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star said: "Sometimes you go out, and it's a mess. And other times, I could be walking for hours and no one gives a s***. If you really want to go unseen, you can do it." Jenna has worked closely with legendary horror filmmaker Tim Burton on the second season of Netflix's Wednesday and is impressed with the "polite" way the Edward Scissorhands director goes about his work. She said: "He's so polite. He knows everybody's names. He trusts the team. "When I initially started working with him, I would ask him for notes and critiques. He wouldn't give any. It's not because he wasn't trying to be helpful, but he was allowing me the space to find what was going to work for me. "It created a greater confidence in myself. I think he really brings out the best in people and allows them to think out of the box, so you want to get weirder and weirder with it. It's such a joy when someone brings that out of you."
