Young Oldham filmmaker produces short film based on his childhood in care starring Corrie actor

ITV Granada's Entertainment Correspondent talks to new filmmaker Saleem Miah about his film 'Spice for Life'
A young filmmaker from Oldham has produced his very first short film starring a Coronation Street actor.
Saleem Miah's film 'Spice for life' is based it on his own experience of growing up in the foster care system.
His film, which is shot entirely in the North West, stars Coronation street actor Adam Hussain and Hollyoaks actress Kirsty-Leigh Porter.
The film is about a care worker who fails to bond with her foster son until they connect over cooking.
Saleem wrote, produced and directed the film which is being screened as part of Manchester Metropolitan University's 2025 Filmmaking cohort.
Saleem said: "I grew up in foster care myself, I moved about quite a lot. I grew up in Oldham, and I was placed with a lot of white families, which I think is quite like a unique, interesting. upbringing.
"I've always wanted to make a film about it. The story it's fictional, but a lot of the scenes in it I have kind of got from my own life, really.
"But I've been really lucky in the sense that I've met people along the way that have supported me."
He added: "I feel like people have assumptions, don't they, and they sort of assume that kids and care face, you're not very smart or, like, you're a troublemaker, you're not ambitious.
"I've always wanted to be an example of someone that doesn't sort of fit those stereotypes and it just proving that we can be just as good as anyone else at something and we can live through it like really good lives."
Saleem is a third year Filmmaking student from Manchester and is also a recipient of the RTS Beryl Vertue Scholarship, supported by Hartswood Films bosses Sue and Debbie Vertue, who mentor him.
He began his journey into the industry through a local BFI talent development scheme, going on to gain a place on the NFTS Film Academy.
The young filmaker is keen to dedicate his career to getting underrepresented voices on screen.

Lucy Mecklenburgh admits she sleeps in separate bed to Ryan as she fumes over wedding planning

Lucy Mecklenburgh has spoken about her relationship with Ryan Thomas, including revealing their sleeping arrangements at home and an update on them planning their wedding Former TOWIE star Lucy Mecklenburgh has revealed that she is sleeping in a separate bed to fiancé Ryan Thomas, branding him a "nightmare". She has also spoken out about the real reason her wedding planning has stalled and admitted the situation had been "quite hard". ‌ Lucy, 33, and former Coronation Street cast member Ryan, 41, who have been in a relationship since 2017, now live in Manchester with their two children. The couple, who got engaged two years after they began dating, gave an insight into their relationship whilst on a podcast together recently. ‌ Ryan's fiancée was a guest on the latest episode of the At Homes with the Thomas Bro's podcast, which was released earlier today. Lucy spoke to Ryan and his twin brothers Scott Thomas and Adam Thomas, both 37, who co-host it. ‌ Asked about their sleeping arrangements at one point, Lucy said on the podcast: "Basically we sleep in separate bedrooms because Ryan is a nightmare sleeper." She went on to say that her fiancé snores and talks in his sleep. Scott teased: "He always wants a cuddle." Lucy responded: "I mean, that is annoying." Sharing her reasons for sleeping separatedly from her partner, she then shared: "Basically, Ryan snores, he sleep talks, he whacks me in his sleep." She added: "Just to get a good night sleep and that's just become normal now." Lucy later shared that she isn't always alone though, with her saying that she sometimes has the couple's five-year-old son in the bed with her. Earlier on the podcast, Lucy said that she considers the couple's sleeping arrangements to be "normal". Speaking about sleeping separately from her partner, she said: "I've spoken to other people and it's pretty normal in their house [too]." Later sharing his thoughts though, her brother-in-law Adam, who's been married to his wife Caroline Thomas for eight years, said: "I couldn't imagine not sleeping in the same bed as Caz. Like, I go to bed holding her hand sometimes." ‌ Elsewhere on the podcast, Lucy was also asked about her wedding plans after getting engaged to Ryan in 2019 whilst on holiday in Italy together. She that they "do talk about" getting married but that plans got "pushed aside" once she realised that she was pregnant with their eldest child. Lucy said: "Now we've got kids, it's valuing that money for other things more than a day. [...] I would love it but then, I don't know, I find it quite hard." Reflecting on their relationship, she said: "Well fell pregnant the night we got engaged." ‌ The reality TV star continued on the podcast: "I was planning the wedding from then." Lucy recalled looking at venues and dresses for the special occasion shortly after getting engaged to Ryan six years ago. She however said that it only last 10 days as she then halted her planning once she discovered she was pregnant. She shared that she had suspected she was pregnant on flight home from Italy, where they got engaged, after feeling nauseous. She said: "That was it. So then my dream ... planning my wedding lasted 10 days and then I knew that once I had a child it wouldn't mean as much as I was really upset about it. I kind of just knew that everything would revolve around the kids after that and that's kind of what happened."

But now she's making a return to screens - and soap - in sister show Coronation Street. A source said: 'Glenda is making an acting comeback 13 years after she was last on TV - she'll be playing a social worker called Alison Hale who deals with Tim and Sally. 'Just as she arrives to tell them they're set to foster the Michealis children, a shocking incident happens that throws everything into chaos.' The actress bowed out of Emmerdale in 1999 with Rachel being dramatically killed off in a domestic abuse storyline. At the time Glenda said: "I've been at Emmerdale for 11 years so it is a big change, but there comes a time when you have to go. 'I have other strings to my bow, and now seems like the right time to put them to the test." More than a decade later she returned to the soap as a visitor after taking a step back from acting to become a teacher. She took her class on a visit to the soap's set and reunited with some of her co-stars. 'The children were delighted to meet Chris Chittell who answered all their questions about what it is like to be famous and what is involved in being a soap actor,' she told the Ilkley Gazette at the time. Emmerdale villain returns to torture Joe Tate in grisly scenes 'It really was quite a trip for the class and I was delighted that they all behaved well and represented their school with pride. 'They also all appreciated how fortunate they were and were genuinely bowled over by their experience.'
