US drugs task force probes Irish fashion designer's death on New York boat, reports

Sunday Worlda day ago
According to the reports, investigators have not ruled out homicide or death due to natural causes
A US drugs task force is investigating the death of Irish swimsuit designer Martha Nolan-O'Slatarra on a boat docked at the Montauk Yacht Cub, it has been reported.
The Suffolk County's interagency East End Drug Task Force is investigating whether drugs may have played a role in the death of the 33year-old, according to local media.
The Long Island-based news outlet, Newsday, has reported that the investigation, 'which draws the first public link between drugs and Nolan-O'Slatarra's death' is moving forward on 'dual tracks'.
However, the outlet also states that, according to one source, investigators have not ruled out homicide or death due to natural causes.
"Until you start ruling stuff out, everything is in play," a law enforcement source told the outlet.
The Suffolk County District Attorney's East End Drug Task Force involves various law enforcement agencies inclining DA Investigators, the East Hampton Town Police Department, the Suffolk County Police Department and New York State Police.
Suffolk police said last week that an autopsy conducted on the body who was found dead on the 32-foot pleasure boat Ripple on August 5 showed no evidence of violence.
Suffolk police said yesterday that there was no update to the investigation and that the cause of death is still 'pending'.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that the Ripple where her body was found is owned by Christopher P Durnan (60) of Long Beach described as 'widower with two young adult children'.

The dad-of-two is believed to split his time between a five-bed, $6million mansion in Long Beach, New York, and an equally plush residence in Lantana, near Palm Beach, Florida.
Durnan, referred to a 'familiar figure at the club', also owns the Durnan Group in Rockville Centre, which manages the 'largest, most successful Workers Compensation Safety Group for Real Estate' on the company's website.
Sources have told other media outlets that Nolan-O'Slatarra headed to the Montauk Yacht Club on the evening of August 4 for a business meeting with Durnan.
Described as a 'guitar-playing widower linked to several boats named after Grateful Dead songs' reportedly invested more than $200,000 in her bikini boutique.
According to the Daily Mail, his wife Marie, a 'dedicated mom and adored aunt to 23 nieces and nephews' in an obituary notice, died unexpectedly at age 49.
The cause of her death was not disclosed.
One 'good Samaritan' told The Post they were woken by a man running down the dock screaming, 'Do something!'
Eye witnesses who went to her aid dialled 911 as they tried to revive her.
But she was declared dead at the scene on August 5.
Nolan-O'Slatarra who was originally from Carlow, had finalised her uncontested divorce from her husband, Sam Ryan, in April.
New York State court records show the couple were married in Utah in 2020.
Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra founded her own fashion brand East x East
Martha's current boyfriend, who the Daily Mail identified as 34-year-old sales exec Nicholas DiRubio, was out of town when the tragedy unfolded.
The Irish Independent understands she had spoken to her boyfriend in the hours before she died, telling him she was going to book an Uber and would be home around 1am.
Her remains are currently in the custody of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office as her family await news on when they will be released for repatriation home to Ireland.
The businesswoman moved to New York from Ireland around 10 years ago and launched a series of pop-up boutiques in the Hamptons featuring her line of swimwear and sunglasses.
In her death notice, Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra's family described her as a 'beloved daughter of Elma, much-loved sister of Jacqui, treasured granddaughter of Betty and Liam, cherished niece of John, Michelle, Barry and Mona and adored partner of Nick.'
"She will be sadly missed by her loving mother and her mother's partner Patrick, sister, aunts, uncles, partner, her father Seamus, grandparents, extended family, relatives and her large circle of friends in Ireland and the US,' her death notice said.
'May Martha's gentle soul rest in peace.'
The family confirmed that the funeral arrangements for Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra will be published later in the week.
Speaking to the Sunday World on Wednesday, her mother, Elma, expressed her anguish over her daughter's death.
'I feel numb and in shock,' she said. 'My younger daughter, Jacqui, arrived in on Tuesday night and she was crying and shaking,' she said.
"She said, 'I have terrible news, Martha's dead',' she added.

Spaniard living in Ireland goes viral with TikTok post about 'spoiled Irish children'

He describes the problems caused by young teens in gangs on the streets, that he described as "testosterone-deprived prepubescents' A Spanish TikToker living in Ireland has said he is shocked by the spoiled nature of teenagers in this country, blaming their entitlement on 'how they're educated at home'. Nacho Barrueco posts videos on Tik Tok under the username @nachobarrueco where he shares his experiences living abroad, and specifically in Ireland. One of his latest videos posted on the platform has been picked up by Spanish media as he addresses a debate 'that seems common in all countries and generates diverse education given to children and their behaviour in certain circumstances'. Spanish Tiktoker Nacho Barrueco News in 90 Seconds - August 14th The content creator recently uploaded the video describing the problems caused by young teens in gangs on the streets, that he described as "testosterone-deprived prepubescents." "I'm referring to the average Irish boy between 10 and 14-years-old," he says in the clip, which currently has more than 300,000 likes. In the video, Barrueco also refers to an incident that occurred on St Patrick's Day while he was out with his friends. "There were about ten of us, and honestly, we looked like Sporting de Gijon fans. We each had about 20 beers and we ran into some kids who were probably 10, 11, 12-years-old at most. Insisting that they 'weren't older," the influencer then describes what happened when one of the children approached his group 'He says to (my) friend, 'hey, give me a beer and a cigarette.' Barrueco and his friends reacted with surprise and laughter, telling the boy he didn't look old enough to drink. But, far from being intimidated, the boy responded defiantly, Barrueco explained, adding the 'kid who weighed 13 kilos wanted to fight me'. He goes onto say that what he experienced isn't an isolated case, but is rather 'a widespread type of behaviour, unfortunately, in the country among that age group. "I was shocked, but like this kid, 80 per cent of children that age are professional challengers,' he says in the video, which has nearly 3,000 comments. "I think in Spain, at that age, we tend to hang our heads, man, especially in situations like what happened with this boy, because you've met good people. 'But imagine if you meet some thugs, they'll slap you three times even if you're 12," he claims, adding that the problem lies in the upbringing within the family. "It has a lot to do with how they're raised at home,' he says. 'The level of spoiled children here in Ireland seems quite high to me," he adds, Barrueco previously raised eyebrows with other observation about the Irish he lives alongside. A previous video expressed his shock that Irish people shower much less than people living in Spain. Barrueco told followers he had noticed that Irish people seemed to bathe less in comparison to those in his native country. He even went so far as to check with an Irish company about his observations. According to the Spanish TikToker, he claims an Irish company told him that here, 'young children aren't bathed right away, they're bathed once every ten days.' Barrueco was further shocked when his landlord allegedly complained about his own showering habits, 'scolding' him for showering too much. "He scolds me because I'm supposed to shower too much,' he said. 'And it's not normal to shower every day here in Ireland," Barrueco continued in the video, which has amassed over 250,000 likes. The TikToker claimed that it is not 'normal' to shower every day in Ireland, and that he was allegedly told by the Irish company that both children and adults take a full bath around every 10 days. According to Barrueco, Spanish people are much cleaner as the weather is considerably warmer, and so they must shower more often. "We Spaniards are too clean because it's so hot,' he added.

Man accused of faking death to avoid rape charges guilty of sexual assault

A Rhode Island man accused of faking his death and fleeing the United States to evade rape charges was found guilty of sexually assaulting a former girlfriend in his first of two Utah trials. A jury in Salt Lake County found Nicholas Rossi guilty of a 2008 rape after a three-day trial in which his accuser and her parents took the stand. Nicholas Rossi was accused of faking his death and fleeing to Europe to avoid rape charges (Firecrest Films/AP) The verdict came hours after Rossi, 38, declined to testify on his own behalf. He will be sentenced in the case on October 20 and is set to stand trial in September for another rape charge in Utah County. First-degree felony rape carries a punishment in Utah of five years to life in prison, said Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill. Mr Gill said: 'We are grateful to the survivor in this case for her willingness to come forward, years after this attack took place. 'We appreciate her patience as we worked to bring the defendant back to Salt Lake County so that this trial could take place and she could get justice. 'It took courage and bravery to take the stand and confront her attacker to hold him accountable.' Utah authorities began searching for Rossi, whose legal name is Nicholas Alahverdian, when he was identified through a decade-old DNA rape kit in 2018. Nicholas Rossi was arrested in Scotland, but claimed he was the victim of mistaken identity. He was extradited to the US in January 2024 (Andrew Milligan/PA) He was among thousands of rape suspects identified and later charged when the state made a push to clear its rape kit backlog. Months after he was charged in Utah County, an online obituary claimed Rossi had died on February 29 2020, of late-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma. But police in his home state of Rhode Island, along with his former lawyer and a former foster family, cast doubt on whether he was dead. He was arrested in Scotland the following year while receiving treatment for Covid-19 after hospital staff in Glasgow recognised his distinctive tattoos from an Interpol notice. Rossi said he was the victim of mistaken identity, claiming to be an Irish orphan named Arthur Knight who was being framed. Months of court proceedings in Edinburgh followed but in November 2022, Sheriff Norman McFadyen determined the man claiming to be Knight was indeed Rossi. A hearing took place in June 2023, with Sheriff McFadyen ruling there was no barrier to Rossi's extradition. An extradition warrant was signed in September 2023 and Rossi was finally sent to the US in January 2024. Investigators say they identified at least a dozen aliases Rossi used over the years to evade capture. Throughout trials in Scotland and the US, Rossi appeared in a wheelchair and sometimes with an oxygen mask (Andrew Milligan/PA) He appeared in court this week in a wheelchair, wearing a suit and tie and using an oxygen tank. Throughout the trial, prosecutors painted a picture of an intelligent man who used his charm to take advantage of a vulnerable young woman. She was living with her parents and recovering from a traumatic brain injury when she responded to a personal ad Rossi posted on Craigslist. They began dating and were engaged within about two weeks. On Monday, the woman described being asked to pay for their dates, cover Rossi's car repairs, lend him 1,000 dollars so he wouldn't be evicted from his apartment and take on debt to buy their engagement rings. He grew hostile soon after their engagement and raped her in his bedroom one night after she drove him home, she testified. The woman said dismissive comments from her parents convinced her not to go to the police at the time. She came forward a decade later after she saw him in the news and learned he was accused of another rape from the same year. Rossi's lawyers sought to convince the jury that his accuser built up years of resentment after he made her foot the bill for everything in their month-long relationship. They argued she accused him of rape to get back at him years later, when he was getting media attention. Nicholas Rossi is set to stand trial in September for another rape charge in Utah County (Firecrest Films/AP) Lawyers for Rossi did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment after the verdict. Rossi's accuser in the Utah County case did, however, go to the police at the time. She gave evidence on Tuesday about her own experiences with Rossi, though he will not stand trial for that rape charge until next month. Rossi is accused of attacking the second woman, another former girlfriend, at his apartment in Orem in September 2008 after she came to collect money she said he stole from her to buy a computer. When police initially interviewed Rossi, he claimed she had raped him and threatened to have him killed. Rossi grew up in foster homes in Rhode Island and had returned there before allegedly faking his death. He was previously wanted in the state for failing to register as a sex offender. The FBI has said he also faces fraud charges in Ohio, where he was convicted of sex-related charges in 2008.

Pic: TikTok The investigation is being led by Suffolk County's East End Drug Task Force, which comprises several different law enforcement organisations, including the Suffolk County sheriff's department, the district attorney's office and several police departments in the region. Toxicology results will not be available for several months, but police are 'very confident' she died from an overdose. Speaking to yesterday, a police spokesman said that investigations into Ms Nolan O'Slatarra's death are 'very much open and progressing'. They would not confirm if drugs or drug paraphernalia were discovered on board the yacht. Details of the funeral for Ms Nolan O'Slatarra will be announced this week. Her death notice reads: 'Martha Nolan of 36 Monacurragh, Carlow and The Upper East Side, Manhattan, New York, passed away unexpectedly, on August 5, 2025. Beloved daughter of Elma, much-loved sister of Jacqui, treasured granddaughter of Betty and Liam, cherished niece of John, Michelle, Barry and Mona and adored partner of Nick. Many Irish people left comments after the death notice was posted online, with one person writing: 'We are heartbroken by the sudden passing of Martha. To lose someone so young, so full of promise, is a pain beyond words. She had not yet been given the time to see her dreams unfold or to share all the light she carried within her. We pray that her memory will be a blessing to all who knew her. 'May God grant her family and friends strength during this difficult time, and may the love, kindness, and light she shared in her lifetime endure. May her soul find rest and peace in the arms of the angels.' An initial examination ruled out a violent death. Montauk is at the farthest end of Long Island, New York. Located in the upmarket Hamptons, the town has become the summer playground of the rich and famous. Many millionaire Wall Street brokers relocate there with their families to escape the blazing heat and humidity of New York's summer. Ms Nolan O'Slatarra was also appointed director of operations at K4 Capital Management, an investment management firm, in June last year. Pic: Martha Nolan/TikTok According to locals, the owner of the boat on which Ms Nolan O'Slatarra died has two vessels moored side by side at Montauk Yacht Club. also revealed earlier this month how the deceased had been accused of stealing from a business with which she had been working. In 2022, she was sued by the founder of Out East Accessories Inc., owned by Jeremy Valeda. The court filing states: 'Defendant Martha Nolan was a former employee of Out East, a company that specialises in the sale of its own branded sunglasses. '[Ms Nolan O'Slatarra] was terminated by Out East for cause in November 2021. In the weeks leading up to her termination and for months thereafter, Nolan ransacked Out East, stole all of its assets, and essentially destroyed the company.' The 33-year-old was found dead on a private yacht in the upmarket area of Montauk in the Hamptons, New York, earlier this month. Pic: SMG/Shutterstock In the filing, Ms Nolan O'Slatarra, along with another person, were accused of stealing the $34,000 remaining in Out East's bank account, stealing all of Out East's eyewear inventory and selling or gifting the eyewear 'without authorisation, to enrich themselves at a total loss to the company', according to Mr Valeda's lawsuit. It added: 'The two were also accused of deleting all of Out East's books and records, digital assets, and proprietary business and financial information from the company's cloud server; locked out company management from their Out East email accounts, preventing them from running the company and responding to messages from partners, customers, and others; locked out company management from Out East social media platforms, ultimately destroying Out East's social media presence; and changed the bank accounts linked to brick-and-mortar stores, online platforms, and vendor accounts from company bank accounts to bank accounts controlled by [the other party] and/or Nolan.' The case was settled a few months after it was filed. Just weeks ago, Ms Nolan O'Slatarra celebrated the grand opening of her brand's pop-up shop in Montauk. 'Goals achieved,' she wrote on a video shared of the shack housing her bikinis and beachwear shared on TikTok on July 1.
