Messi's New Bodyguard? Argentina's Rodrigo De Paul Joins Inter Miami
The 31-year-old star is officially Messi's club teammate after Inter Miami announced De Paul's arrival on Friday. It's a reunion for the two Argentina stars who led the Albiceleste to the 2022 World Cup title in Qatar.
De Paul arrives on an initial loan from Atlético Madrid until the end of the 2025 season, with an option to make the transfer permanent through the 2029 MLS season. He had 187 appearances for Atlético, scoring 14 goals as a defensive midfielder, but did not win silveware with the team.
A tenacious midfielder who became a trademark enforcer of sorts on opponents following hard fouls on Messi, De Paul is expected to provide the same sort of physical play at Inter Miami. Along with the 2022 World Cup crown, De Paul and Messi have won two Copa América titles (2021, 2024).
"What brings me to Inter Miami is the desire to compete, win titles, to write the pages in the club's history," De Paul said. "It's a club that is shaping up to be great, to have a long history, so that many people follow this incredible team."
The arrival of De Paul also put an additional spotlight on Miami's roster compliance rules. Each MLS team is allowed to have three Designated Players on its roster. Those players are paid outside of each teams' salary cap structure. With Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba taking up Miami's DP slots, De Paul – who reportedly made upwards of $12 million at Atlético – will instead play this season on loan.
According to ESPN, De Paul will be paid $1.5 million for the rest of this season before earning $12 million per season starting in 2026. Busquets is out of a contract at the end of the season. De Paul would likely take over the DP slot for next season, although it remains to be seen if Busquets (who reportedly makes $8.7 million) would remain in Miami on a lower-paying deal.
Earlier this summer, the MLS Players Association published the salaries of all players. Not surprisingly, Messi led the league with a total annual compensation of $20.4 million -- greater than the entire payroll of 21 teams. Alba earns $6 million.
Inter Miami's next game is Saturday against FC Cincinnati, although Messi and Alba won't be playing that game. The duo were suspended due to not attending the MLS All-Star Game in Austin earlier this week. MLS rules state that any player who does not participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to play in the next match.

Cubs Honor Ryne Sandberg With Ceremonial Patch on Uniform
The Chicago Cubs have unveiled a ceremonial patch on their uniform in memory of Ryne Sandberg one day after the Hall of Famer's death. Sandberg, who made 10 All-Star teams with the Cubs before his retirement in 1997, died Monday at the age of 65. The blue patch has a red 23 – Sandberg's uniform number – and features his signature in white lettering. It sits over the Cubs logo on an arm sleeve. The Cubs posted a video on social media of the patch being sewn onto the uniforms before Tuesday night's game at Milwaukee. During pregame warmups, the Cubs wore T-shirts with the message, "FO23VER." "It's sad because it kind of hits home I think a little more, but in the other way, you want to honor Ryno the best we can and shine a spotlight on a great life lived, for all the great things he represented as a man and as a Chicago Cub," Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. As Sandberg fought cancer last year, the Cubs unveiled a statue outside Wrigley Field that showed the second baseman in his familiar defensive crouch. As he talked about Sandberg before Tuesday's game, Counsell looked back on that ceremony from June 2024. "I was thinking about the day the statue was unveiled," Counsell said. "That's my favorite day as a Chicago Cub, just the team being there and fans in a different setting than in the ballpark, and watching Ryno and his family and knowing what he was going through and everything." Sandberg hit .285 with 282 homers, 1,061 RBIs and 344 steals in 15 years with the Cubs and was named NL MVP in 1984. The second baseman played 13 games for Philadelphia in 1981 but got traded to Chicago the following January. The Cubs also designated Chris Flexen for assignment before their matchup with the Brewers. Fellow right-hander Gavin Hollowell was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. The 31-year-old Flexen got off to a strong start this year, but he had surrendered 15 runs and 22 hits in 14 2/3 innings over his last five appearances at the time of the move. "It wasn't a fun conversation," Counsell said. "It never is. Chris has been a contributor on this team. He's contributed in some big ways to this team. Sometimes it doesn't feel fair." Twins Place All-Star CF Byron Buxton On 10-Day Injured List With Rib Injury
The Minnesota Twins placed All-Star center fielder Byron Buxton on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to a rib injury. The move, retroactive to Sunday, comes after Buxton was removed from the Twins' game against the Washington Nationals in the seventh inning on Saturday with soreness in his side. An MRI on Sunday revealed irritation in the cartilage in his rib cage. Buxton is in the midst of a career season. In 85 games, Buxton is hitting .282 with 23 home runs and 59 RBIs.
