Water crisis, polluted stretch of Nag River double whammy for Subhan Nagar

Nagpur: The residents of Subhan Nagar and Sai Nagar in Pardi are grappling with a dual crisis — chronic water shortage and the foul smell from the filth along the Nag River flowing close by.

Residents claimed they are receiving water for barely half an hour each day, that too contaminated with algae and dust, but their complaints to civic authorities have fallen on deaf ears.
A visit to the area revealed that there is no retaining wall along the Nag River flowing along the localities. In absence of a retaining wall, an internal road ending abruptly at the river bank has become a safety hazard for both motorists and pedestrians.
While there is minimal water in the river stretch during summers, the stagnant pools and accumulated waste along its banks give out an unbearable stench.
Saksham Madavi, who runs a grocery store adjacent to the river bank, said, "Every day we are forced to live with this foul smell. The water crisis is adding to our frustration. We get water for barely 30 minutes, and most of the time it's unfit for use. Complaints to the authorities have yielded no results."
Echoing the concerns, Umesh Yadav, who runs a tea stall near the river, said. "On one hand, they claim Nagpur is becoming a Smart City. On the other hand, look at the condition here. There's no drinking water, the river stinks, and the road ends right into the filth."
Speaking to TOI, Sanjay Mate, executive engineer of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC) Lakadganj Zone, said, "The Nag River has no retaining wall at several locations, not just in Subhan Nagar or Sai Nagar.

To construct new retaining walls for the entire stretch of the river running through the city would require nearly Rs2,000 crore. This is not financially sustainable for NMC on its own."
Mate further said that several proposals have been submitted to the state govt requesting funds under urban development schemes.
Local activists are also planning to escalate the matter to higher authorities, warning that without intervention, the situation could spiral into a health and safety emergency.

British couple and children who lost their lives in air crash laid to rest in Malad

1 2 3 Mumbai: Four British nationals who lost their lives in the Ahmedabad air crash were laid to rest in Malad on Wednesday. The fledgling family of Javed Ali Syed, 38, his wife Mariam, 35, and their little children Zayn, 6, and Amani, 4, had embodied the Indian middle class dream of making a better life abroad. The two children were among the youngest victims of the tragedy. Raised in Iraniwadi, Goregaon, Javed studied hotel management in London and acquired British citizenship. He was manager at the Best Western Kensington Olympia Hotel while Mariam, 35, worked at Harrods. The couple lived in Kensington, London. "They travelled to India to celebrate Eid ul' Azha on June 7 with the family as well as to treat Javed's ailing mother who had recently suffered a heart attack," said cousin Saood Memon. At 5pm Wednesday, they were buried at the Jamaat-Ul-Muslimeen Kabrastan in Malad West. Hundreds of mourners crowded the courtyard. Four caskets covered in crimson cloth were borne upon the shoulders of mourners. As the imam intoned prayers, everyone recited along. Among them stood Javed's elder brother Imtiaz Ali Syed, exhaustion evident in his eyes. "Right now, given this situation I can't even talk to you properly," he said to TOI. "My mind is completely preoccupied in making sure we send them off well." Javed's mother Farida was not informed of the calamity that had befallen them until Monday. Imtiaz arranged for a cardiologist and psychologist to be present while breaking the news to her. Imtiaz had jetted to Ahmedabad on the night of June 12 and was there for five days with his uncles. Once the DNA tests were matched, the bodies were flown to Mumbai and kept in a Byculla morgue, then brought home for the last rites. He had put away his mother's phone and shielded her from all social contact lest she collapse of shock. On Wednesday, though, the distraught lady was unable to let go of her son's coffin. Javed's grandmother too wept bitterly. In Iraniwadi, hundreds of people arrived to convey their condolences. Several others gathered in their balconies and windows. Yasmine Hassan, the sister of Mariam, arrived from London to bid farewell. She nearly fainted, then mourned for the kids, screaming, "Meri jaan the woh (they were my life)! Please bring them back. Mere bachche chale gaye (my children are gone)." A neighbour said, "They came to India after so long to celebrate such a wonderful day and met such a horrible situation." Another said, "Only because they couldn't get a direct flight from Mumbai to London, they chose to go to Ahmedabad. This move cost them their entire family." Meanwhile, on Thursday, the remains of co-pilot Clive Kunder will be buried at Sewri Christian Cemetery around 3.00 pm. In Dombivli, the last rites of airhostess Roshni Songhare will be performed in the local Shamshan Bhumi. There was a delay in despatching her remains after the DNA verification procedure. The body of Badlapur-based AI cabin crew member Deepak Pathak has not been identified yet.

Over 4,100 Trees In Nagpur Found Choked, Just 1,100 Freed So Far: NMC to HC

1 2 Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Thursday informed the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court that over 4,147 trees across the city were found choked by concrete, but only 1,104 were de-choked so far despite directives and multiple agency involvement. The data was submitted during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL No. 39/2024) filed by environmental activists Sharad Patil, Prachi Mahurkar, Yash Netke, and Preeti Patel through counsel Radhika Bajaj. As per petitioners, while executing road improvement projects, the work of concretisation by cement, asphalt, or bitumen is choking roots of trees. They claimed though administrative instructions are issued to the contractors and subordinate officers to ensure removal of concrete, asphalt, or bitumen near trees, effective steps are not being taken by respondents. NMC counsel Jemini Kasat submitted the affidavit and minutes of meetings with agencies such as NHAI, NIT, and PWD, confirming the extent of choking and partial progress on relief efforts. Kasat told the court two experts—Kaustav Chatterjee of Green Vigil Foundation and Dilip Chinchmalatpure—were included in official de-choking panel as per court's earlier order. The panel has begun conducting site visits to verify work and shared technical recommendations, including removing concrete as per Urban Green Guidelines 2014, ensuring soil aeration, and protecting root systems. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "The experts delivered a presentation on best practices and are expected to submit their assessments during the next review," Kasat said, adding that officials from PWD and NHAI have also been included for effective implementation on the ground. The petitioners objected to their exclusion from committee despite prior experience in tree conservation. The bench, comprising Justices Nitin Sambre and Sachin Deshmukh, questioned the civic body on this omission. NMC also submitted various govt departments have started following the 2014 Urban Green Guidelines and cited ongoing environmental audits by NEERI. Kasat informed the court Environment Status Reports (ESR) for the years 2017–18 to 2023–24 (barring 2021–22 due to the pandemic) were prepared scientifically by NEERI and submitted. The 2024–25 ESR is currently under preparation. The division bench gave time to file compliance documents, directing the finalised ESR for 2024–25 to be submitted by July 1, and adjourned the matter to July 9. The PIL highlights the alarming decline in Nagpur's green cover, which decreased from 31 percent in 1999 to a mere 21 percent in 2018, as per a study conducted by ISRO's Regional Remote Sensing Centre in 2019. The petitioners attribute this drastic reduction to the rapid expansion of urban infrastructure projects, which have adversely affected the city's once-abundant greenery.
