EGA trialling new wearable technology as part of annual ‘Beat the Heat' safety programme - Middle East Business News and Information

Mid East Info04-06-2025
Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, today announced the introduction of new innovative wearable safety technology in its annual 'Beat the Heat' programme to prevent heat-related illness amongst industrial workers in the hot UAE summer.
Heat-related illness is a hazard for anyone working outside in the UAE summer, and can be fatal if left untreated. EGA's industrial processes generate further heat and must operate continuously, meaning work is conducted outside around-the-clock all summer. EGA is a global leader in combating heat-related illness, with no cases since 2021.
EGA has been trialling wearable technology to monitor critical health indicators during the summer since 2022. The new wearable technology is designed for challenging industrial environments like smelters. The technology offers enhanced location services, connectivity and consistent real-time data feeds accessible by EGA supervisors and medical teams.
The devices provide automated work and rest cycles if core body temperature rises beyond a specified threshold.
'Beat the Heat' is EGA's annual summer-long, comprehensive programme to combat occupational heat stress and entirely prevent heat-related illness. The initiative has been running for over a decade to drive awareness amongst EGA's employees of the early signs of heat stress, and equip and empower them to take action to prevent the onset of heat-related illness.
This year, EGA has also deployed full body cooling units at EGA medical centres and selected operational areas in Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah. The cooling suits offer rapid, non-invasive core body cooling to support emergency response.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium , said: 'Heat-related illness is a serious challenge in our region. At EGA, our goal each summer is to engage everyone in ensuring we have zero cases of heat-related illness at our company, and together we have a long track record of success. Technology has the potential to make our Beat the Heat programme even more effective.'
EGA's 'Beat the Heat' campaign includes hydration testing before and during shifts, scheduled cooling breaks, access to cooling showers, and dedicated rest zones across EGA's operations. Employees and contractors use cooling booths, drinking water stations, icemakers, and portable air conditioning units to stay cool and hydrated throughout the day.
EGA achieved zero recordable heat-related illnesses for the third consecutive summer in 2024. EGA last cases of recordable heat-related illness were in 2021, when two employees required treatment at the company's medical centres. In both cases, the employees received hydration via intravenous drips and fully recovered within hours.2018.

EGA to deliver first-ever CelestiAL-R billets to leading Japanese manufacturer Sankyo Tateyama - Middle East Business News and Information

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, August 2025: Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates and the world's biggest 'premium aluminium' producer, today announced an agreement to supply of CelestiAL-R billets to Sankyo Tateyama, the leading Japanese manufacture of aluminium components for architectural and industrial applications through our strategic partner ITOCHU Corporation. CelestiAL-R is the world's first combination of aluminium produced with solar power and scrap metal, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The introduction of CelestiAL-R billets allows EGA to meet further demand for low-carbon aluminium in extrusion and forging applications. Previously, EGA only produced CelestiAL-R foundry alloys which are ideal for re-melting applications. Demand for low-carbon aluminium is rising in Japan as industries seek to reduce their carbon footprint in line with national net-zero targets. EGA and ITOCHU supplies aluminium ingot and billet to Sankyo Tateyama, and in 2024 started to supply CelestiAL, which is solar power generated aluminium. EGA is able to produce CelestiAL-R to customer specifications due to the high quality of EGA's primary aluminium, the rigorous selection of scrap metal, and the flexibility of EGA's Casthouses. Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium , said: 'Our first production of CelestiAL-R billets is a step forward in expanding the portfolio of our most sustainable aluminium products. At EGA, we focus on innovation and flexibility in delivering the highest quality, low-carbon aluminium to meet specific customer needs. We value our long-standing partnership with Sankyo Tateyama and thank them for their continued trust in EGA.' Shozo Hirano, President of Sankyo Tateyama , said: 'Reducing Scope 3 CO2 emissions from aluminium raw material is a major challenge in achieving carbon neutral. By using CelestiAL-R in addition to CelestiAL, which is supplied by our long time partners EGA and ITOCHU Corporation, we aim to contribute to sustainable and affluent life.' Scrap for CelestiAL-R is a mix of post-consumer and pre-consumer industrial scrap. All scrap arriving at EGA is tested against 40 different chemical and other property requirements.

Low-Carbon Aluminium Produced Using Barakah Nuclear Energy

The aluminium, branded MinimAL, was developed through a partnership between Emirates Global Aluminium and Emirates Nuclear Energy Company, and has been delivered to Egypt's Canex Aluminium. Aug 11, 2025 The United Arab Emirates has produced its first batch of low-carbon aluminium manufactured using electricity from the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in Abu Dhabi. The aluminium, branded MinimAL, was developed through a partnership between Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC), and has been delivered to Egypt's Canex Aluminium. The shipment reinforces EGA's position as a global supplier of low-carbon industrial materials at a time when demand for such products is projected to triple by 2040. Aluminium smelting is one of the most energy-intensive industrial processes, with electricity generation accounting for roughly 60% of the industry's greenhouse gas emissions. Nuclear energy allows for uninterrupted clean power to be used in this process, which industry leaders view as critical for decarbonising the UAE's heavy industry while also strengthening energy security. Barakah, which began full commercial operations in September last year, generates 40 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually - about a quarter of the country's total demand - and prevents 22.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year, equivalent to removing 4.8 million cars from the road. The clean power used for producing MinimAL is certified under the UAE's Clean Energy Certification programme and supplied to EGA via the national grid by Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). Canex Aluminium will use the material for products in infrastructure, solar energy, transportation, and architectural applications.
