Three Rivers Avian Center and friends celebrate the return of spring migrant birds
They were joined at Pipestem Resort State Park by other groups that are working to restore certain ecosystems. This was a free fun and educational experience for folks.

Wendy Perrone is the executive director for Three Rivers Avian Center. She explained there were a host of hot topics discussed at this celebration.
'We have seen quite a bit of problems with ecosystem degradation, people not understanding how to feed wild birds, how to do basic care 1-to-1, what happens when a bird hits a window? We are here talking about all sorts of different things. We are talking about migration. We are talking about the ecosystems that sustain these birds and things that you can do in your day to day life to help these birds and help them try to turn around those numbers that we are seeing of loss,' said Perone.
Perrone told 59News that we have lost 52% of migratory birds that used to fill our skies over the past 20 years.
In the Three Rivers Avian Center tent, she was taking care of Regis – a 17-year-old bald eagle, who has been grounded after an accident in the wild. They also had an American Kestrel and a great horned owl who also aren't able to be released back into the wild.

Woman snags $10,000 and 60 invasive snakes in record-breaking Florida Python Challenge
When it was all said and done Wednesday, a woman emerged as the top snake slayer of the 2025 Florida Python Challenge. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) announced Taylor Stanberry removed 60 invasive Burmese pythons and claimed the $10,000 Ultimate Grand Prize. The FWC announced that 934 participants from 30 states and Canada removed a record 294 pythons during the 10-day competition. This year marked the first time Everglades National Park was included among the eight official competition locations. Florida authorities said the competition plays a crucial role in preserving Florida's natural biodiversity and gives residents an active role in environmental protection. Stanberry, a Naples, Florida resident, alongside her husband, Rhett, runs a Facebook page dedicated to snakes and hunting. The couple also has a YouTube and Instagram page. The Florida Python Challenge, now a yearly event, includes public education. "The python, animal that can get 20 feet long and weigh 200 pounds, is destroying the natural food chain. Under the leadership of the FWC, we started the Python Challenge," Ron Bergeron, South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) governing board member, said. The goal is twofold: reduce the impact of the invasive species and raise public awareness about the threat these animals pose to native wildlife in the Greater Everglades ecosystem, state officials said. "The Python Challenge is not just catching pythons. That's a part of it. It's educating the public so that when you're in the Everglades, all of the groups that recreate in the Everglades learn how to remove a python safely year-round," Bergeron said.

Pittsburgh among best cities for "tree huggers," report finds
Pittsburgh is among the best cities for "tree huggers," a new report from Lawn Love found. On Wednesday, Lawn Love released its "2025's Top Cities for Tree Huggers" list, and Pittsburgh came in at No. 20 with an overall score of 51.09. Nashville, Tennessee, came in at No. 1 with an overall score of 58.87, followed by Columbus, Georgia, at No. 2. Atlanta, Georgia, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Athens, Georgia, rounded out the top 5, respectively. Cincinnati, Ohio, came in at No. 11 with an overall score of 53.63. To find the best cities for "tree huggers," Lawn Love said it looked at 14 metrics related to the 500 biggest cities in the United States before grouping them into three categories: tree canopy, urban tree infrastructure and climate. For each metric in the three categories, Lawn Love said it calculated scores to determine each city's ranking. A city's overall score was then based on the average of its scores across all metrics and categories. The metrics included tree canopy coverage, number of tree maintenance services, average yard square acreage, and number of native tree and shrub species. Pittsburgh ranked No. 9 in the urban tree and infrastructure category, No. 64 in the climate category, and No. 77 in the tree canopy category. Cincinnati ranked No. 4 in the urban tree and infrastructure category, No. 58 in the tree canopy category, and No. 85 in the climate category. According to its website, Lawn Love offers services nationwide.
