Sunderland RV Safe Park's lease extended for an additional three months
On Friday, the that Sunderland RV Safe Park's lease has been extended through June. It was initially set to expire on March 31.

The shelter was 'created through a collaborative lease agreement' between the Port of Portland and the Portland Bureau of Transportation, according to city officials. It first opened in June 2023 with Salvation Army as its manager, through the organization's contract with the Joint Office of Homeless Services.

While Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney said the site could be considered as a 'potential budget trade-off' for the city's multi-million-dollar deficit, leaders and residents expressed their interest in keeping the site for the nearly 60 people it serves.
In a statement, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said he supports the lease extension and welcomes cost-effective proposals for maintaining the shelter.

'RVs are uniquely vulnerable to fires, leaks, mold, carbon monoxide, and other hazards, which makes it all the more important that occupied RVs are in RV parks and not on the street,' Wilson added.
With the shelter's lease slated to expire in June, its next steps are dependent on the budget package that city leaders establish for the next fiscal year beginning on July 1.

Oregon adopts plan to protect endangered Southern Resident orcas
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission voted to adopt the Southern Resident Orca Endangered Species Management Plan at its Aug. 15 meeting. The plan was approved with an added amendment requiring a periodic review every five years. 'It is clear that Oregon fish and wildlife managers are going to contribute to the recovery of these critically endangered orcas,' said Oceana Senior Scientist Ben Enticknap. The amended plan will ensure the agency is able to respond to new science and adapt to changing conditions. As KOIN 6 News previously reported, the species has declined since 1995 due to malnutrition, disease, and traumatic injury from collisions with ships and other watercraft. Only 73 Southern Resident Orcas remain. 'Oregon has an important role to play in addressing the biggest threats to Southern Residents including the lack of prey (Chinook salmon), vessel noise, vessel disturbance, and contaminants,' Enticknap said. 'It is going to take bold actions and a long-term commitment, but we are excited to see Oregon join in the Pacific Northwest effort to protect and recover these amazing ocean animals.' Pearl District residents opposed to homeless shelter
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A new 40-bed homeless shelter planned for the Pearl District brought about 200 people to a public meeting to voice their concerns about crime and drug use. Despite getting a tour of the proposed shelter site around Northwest Northrup, area residents packed the to make their thoughts known even though, they said, city leaders aren't interested in their input. Mayor Keith Wilson was invited to this meeting but 'respectfully declined,' his office told KOIN 6 News. But Wilson's team also said they've been in almost daily communication with some of the neighbors for this proposed shelter, providing information and trying to set up meetings. Neighbors distressed over planned homeless shelter in Portland's Pearl District The shelter will expand from 40 beds to 200 beds by the end of the year. It's part of the broader city initiative to help nearly 600 unsheltered Portlanders off the streets in the Northwest and Pearl District. 'I think what the neighborhood wants and what I would want is people to get back to living healthy, productive lives. And the great question is how to do that, especially when people are deep into, chemical dependency,' Northwest District Association President Todd Zarnitz said. 'And, you know, there's no easy answers, of course. But what we want is to not make the problem worse and make it worse in our backyard, basically.' Kevin Kahn has lived in Portland for nearly five decades. He was one of the hundreds of angry neighbors who packed the Lucky Labrador Monday night. 'Most of that time, I would say, the city has changed incredibly for the better,' Kahn told KOIN 6 News. But he's concerned about the city right now. 'If you don't catch the spiral early, it's a long way back. And I'm really concerned that Portland is in the spiral,' he said. 'And you know, Band-Aids don't fix spirals.' City officials said they're working with the Salvation Army, which is slated to be the site's operator. Coming out in Portland: Support from unexpected places
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Jenny Nguyen remembers ' everything like it was yesterday' the day she came out to her parents when she was 17. 'I remember laying down in bed just sweating and thinking about how I had what felt like I had lived only half my life up until that moment by hiding this other half of myself and how I felt like I needed to come out,' Nguyen, the founder and CEO of told KOIN 6 News. After what felt like the longest 5 minutes of her life, she got up from the bed and went to her parents. 'I just start crying. And my dad said, 'It's OK. What's going on?' And I told them that I was gay. And my mom's reaction was pretty swift, which was something to the effect of, 'How do you know? Are you sure? Maybe it's a phase', all of the lines that we sometimes hear,' she said. 'Dad was emotional. And he goes, 'You know what? We love you. We'll help you figure it out.'' 'And,' she said, 'I got up and I went back downstairs and I just crawled back into bed.' Jenny felt she was finally able to move forward. But her parents had to face their own journeys on how to show support and acceptance for their only child. That adjustment did not happen overnight. 'It was a little tough,' Jenny's dad, Tuong Nguyen, said. 'I kept a straight face at home, but I remember I worked B Shift, which is from 3 to 11pm. I actually drove to work and I cried at work. I had no one to share with. And I actually caught my wife crying at home, by herself, in a room. So it was a tough adjustment.' Tuong, who worked at the City of Portland Wastewater Treatment Plant for 33 years until he retired, continued to support Jenny's love for sports. Sometimes they'd run into Chris Mack — who worked with Tuong — at sporting events. 'When there was an American Basketball League here, Tuong and Jenny were at some of the games and I had season tickets, so I was there all the time,' Mack said. Mack eventually became Tuong's boss and the two worked together daily. 'She became kind of my confidant,' Tuong said of Chris Mack. 'We spoke a lot about Jenny and stuff. It definitely felt a lot like an outlet for me to let it out. All my other coworkers, I don't share that much with them. But her, yeah, I felt comfortable.' Seeing Chris be a strong, no-nonsense professional he greatly respected helped Tuong see how Jenny's life 'out' would not stop her from succeeding. 'I'm so grateful,' Jenny said. 'I'm so grateful for that because it really helped my dad to be more supportive and open and kind.' The unique bond between co-workers grew through the years and The Sports Bra is something else that brought Jenny, Tuong and Chris closer together. 'I brag about it all the time,' Chris said. 'My family lives in Michigan, so when they see anything about The Sports Bra, they call me and tell me or they send me the article. So it's kind of like a family thing now, too.' The is to be a place that 'supports, empowers and promotes girls and women in sports and in the community.' The 4th annual Pride Block Party will take place in July at The Sports Bra. Chris loves 'coming here because when you look at the TV screens, there's women playing ice hockey and it's like, wow, that is so cool. And the roller derby over here.' Each coming out experience is different. But Tuong and Chris want others to know they don't have to go through it alone. 'What I would say to somebody who's questioning or find somebody to talk to, it doesn't matter who it is, but just get some support and be able to talk stuff out a little bit,' Chris said. 'It's a personal story,' Tuong said, 'but you know that there are people just like you in the same boat as you and can help you cope.' As for Jenny Nguyen, she's found her way and is comfortable where she is. 'I used to feel like I never belonged in any spaces. I was always the odd one out,' Jenny said.
