Why Apple founder Steve Jobs believed teams should ‘argue' and ‘fight': ‘That's what it's…'

Time of India23-06-2025
Apple founder Steve Jobs
once said that building great teams requires friction – the one that leads to arguments and strong opinions, but resulting in better ideas and stronger people. In a 1995 interview with PBS's Triumph of the Nerds, Jobs recalled a story from his childhood when a neighbor showed him how a rock tumbler worked. He told interviewer Bob Cringely that a widower neighbor showed him a homemade tumbler consisting of 'a motor', 'coffee can' and a 'little band between them'. It was filled with "regular old ugly rocks," water and grit, Jobs told the interviewer, recalling that the stones emerged "amazingly beautiful" after a night of clattering. 'That's what it's like when you get a bunch of incredibly talented people working together,' Jobs said.
''They bump up against each other, they make some noise, they make some mistakes, they have arguments sometimes, they fight — but they polish each other,' he added. Jobs believed that real progress comes when people are forced to challenge each other, not just agree.
At the time of the interview, he was running NeXT and was preparing to return to Apple.
Former Apple employees, as per a Benzinga report, say Jobs often structured team spaces to encourage such interaction. Engineers and designers were placed close together so they had to confront issues head-on. Similar methods were used later in iPhone development and at Pixar, where open criticism in story sessions was part of the creative process.

would reportedly call colleagues at hours. As per a recent CNBC report, Docter told Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies Gala that Jobs would phone colleagues 'at any time, day or night, three in the morning … you're on vacation, doesn't matter'. He further stated that Jobs' after-hours calls were non-negotiable and that the intensity often ignored personal boundaries. Docter's comments come amid ongoing discussions about tech's always-on work culture. White House Scorecard: US creates loyalty rating system for 533 firms. Here's why this matters

The White House has created a loyalty rating system or a scorecard that rates 533 companies and trade associations on how hard they worked to promote US President Donald Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill', reported the news portal Axios, citing a senior official aware of the development. This will allow the Trump administration to quickly understand how to approach the listed companies for future conversations and interactions, according to the news report. The scorecard will consider multiple factors while accounting for the overall support rating for the Trump administration, taking into account things like official social media posts, press releases, videos, advertisements, and attendance at the official White House events, as per the report. Based on these criteria, the companies will be ranked under three classifications: Strong, Moderate, or Low. The news portal also cited that there are "good" partners in the list like United, Delta, Uber, DoorDash, AT&T, Cisco, Airlines for America and the Steel Manufacturers Association. It will help 'us see who really goes out and helps vs. those who just come in and pay lip service,' a person aware of the development told the news portal. They also highlighted that the grading system can change if the companies start 'advocating more' now for Trump's tax bill or other additional administrative policies. The dynamic scorecards 'incorporate the support of present and future administration initiatives,' a White House official told the news portal Forbes. Companies like Delta and United have supported Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill' calling for a $12.5 billion investment for upgrading the Air Traffic Control (ATC) systems, which came after a recent airline crash at the Reagan National Airport, reported the news portal Forbes. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the cab-hailing service, Uber, Dara Khosrowshahi, also supported US President Donald Trump by donating $1 million to Trump's inaugural fund while publicly backing the "No Tax on Tips" policy via the megabill. Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins, who also extended his support for Trump's bill and for the provisions of corporate tax it brings along with it, as per the report. One of the largest tech companies in the world, Apple, is also likely in the good books of US President Donald Trump as the iPhone maker has committed $600 billion into domestic manufacturing, which is expected to bring tens of thousands of hobs in the US economy. Some companies will also be in focus like, Amazon, Meta and Google who have pulled back on aspects of diversity, equity and inclusion targeted by the Trump administration, while others like Bank of America and JPMorgan will be at watch after rejecting him as a customer, according to the Forbes report.

Jensen Huang sells $40 million of Nvidia shares under this trading plan he adopted in March: What is it

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has sold 201,404 company shares this week. According to a Form 4 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the transactions were made on August 11, 12 and 13, under a prearranged 10b5-1 trading plan that he adopted in March earlier this year. The shares were sold at price ranging from $180.026 to $183.6417, resulting in total proceeds of $40,959,534. These transactions, as per a report, came as Nvidia's stock trades close to its 52-week high of $184.48. The chipmaker has reported revenue growth of 86% over the past 12 months. Post these transactions, Huang still owns 72,998,225 shares. What is 10b5-1 trading plan under which Nvidia CEO sold shares Rule 10b5-1 is a regulation from the US SEC that lets insiders at public companies set up a plan to sell their shares ahead of time. Under this rule, major shareholders can schedule the sale of a fixed number of shares at a set time, helping them avoid accusations of insider trading. Many company executives use 10b5-1 plans for this reason. The rule was introduced to clarify Rule 10b-5, part of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, which is the main law used to investigate securities fraud. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mystical Forest Vase: Hot Sale topgadgetlife Shop Now Undo How much shares Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang now owns After the latest sell-off, Jensen Huang now owns 72,998,225 shares of Nvidia common stock. Apple event preview: iPhone 17 lineup specs and prices leak ahead of September launch

September is almost here, and that means one thing in the tech calendar: Apple is about to unveil its latest iPhones -- the iPhone 17 series. The Cupertino giant is expected to pull the wraps off the iPhone 17 line-up, complete with the new iOS 26 out of the box. While the official event is still a few weeks away, the internet is already awash with leaks, renders and bold claims about what Apple might have in store this year. So, what's on the cards? Here's a round-up of the most credible 17 lineup rumoured pricesPricing is always the million-dollar question. Apple has reportedly managed to blunt the full impact of Trump-era tariffs thanks to its growing US manufacturing partnerships. That said, with Asia still central to its supply chain, price swings remain a latest chatter suggests Apple may increase base storage to 256GB across the iPhone 17 range, up from 128GB. If that happens, insiders say a $50 (around Rs 4,400) price bump could follow. So this means, if the iPhone 16 (vanilla variant) was launched at Rs 79,900, the iPhone 17 would cost around Rs 83,300. If the rumours are true, then the high-end variants will also witness a big price hike. As for the brand-new iPhone 17 Air, several sources have reportedly pointed to a price tag of around $900 (Rs 78,886). That would place it above the standard iPhone 17 but below the Pro models, carving out its own niche in the line-up. Since this is the US pricing, for Indian users, the iPhone 17 Air could range between Rs 90,000 to Rs 1 lakh. iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Air expected specsiPhone 17 Air: Rumoured to be Apple's thinnest phone yet, borrowing the 'Air' name from its ultralight laptops. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports it will use a basic A19 chip, a single rear camera, and Apple's in-house modem introduced earlier this year. Expect a 6.6-inch screen, Dynamic Island, Camera Control button, and a titanium frame. Colour choices may include black, white, light blue and light 17 and 17 Pro: Leaks hint at aluminium builds, lighter than titanium, and potentially a new full-width 'camera island' design. The Pro model could also feature a redesigned antenna for stronger wireless reception, according to leaker Majin Bu. Colours tipped include black, white, steel grey, green, purple and light blue for the standard 17, and bolder shades (black, white, grey, dark blue and orange) for the Pro versions. iPhone 17 Pro Max: As usual, expect the larger, longer-lasting variant to round out the line-up. Rumours suggest the same aluminium frame and camera island design as the Pro, with added battery life thanks to its 17 launch dateApple traditionally hosts its iPhone event in September, and this year appears no different. According to citing German carrier sources, the date pencilled in is Tuesday, September 9, typically sends invites only a week or two before the big day, so nothing is official yet. Still, based on past precedent, early September is a safe bet. Looking forward, some reports hint that from 2026, Apple may stagger its launches, unveiling Pro models in autumn and standard versions in spring. For the iPhone 17 family, however, everything is expected to land together next month.- Ends
