Databricks
said on Wednesday it would buy
database startup
Neon in its latest deal valued at about $1 billion, aiming to strengthen its analytics platform with technology that can help businesses develop and use
artificial intelligence
agents more easily.
Demand for
AI agents
, programs that need little human intervention in executing routine tasks such as writing code or sending emails, has been growing as companies embrace the new technology to automate workflows and improve efficiency, creating demand for Neon's specific databases that are optimized for AI agents.
Neon's
cloud-based platform
, based on the PostgreSQL open-source database - a system for organizing and managing information online - helps developers and AI agents store, access and manage data in real-time, making it easier to build and deploy AI-powered applications. Databricks, which is also an investor in Neon, sees the opportunity to own the newly built database as a way to attract more enterprises using its platform to build agents.
The database market is due for a shakeup in the next few years, Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi told Reuters.
"The disruption will be with AI. We would love to own a chunk of that." Founded in 2021, Neon has partnered with platforms such as Vercel, Replit, Cloudflare, GitHub and Microsoft to integrate its serverless PostgreSQL offering into widely used developer tools and platforms. It has raised nearly $130 million from investors including General Catalyst and Notable Capital, according to PitchBook.
Databricks said Neon's team is expected to join the data analytics company after the transaction closes. San Francisco, California-based Databricks, which secured a $62 billion valuation after raising a whopping $10 billion last year, offers a platform designed to help users ingest, analyze and build AI applications using complex data from various sources.
One of the most highly valued private companies in the world, it competes with Snowflake and is widely seen as a public listing candidate. Databricks used its valuable private shares to acquire generative AI startup MosaicML in a $1.3-billion deal in 2023 and last year said it would buy data-management startup Tabular for more than $1 billion.
More than 10,000 organizations, including Comcast, Block, Rivian and Shell, rely on the company's Databricks Data Intelligence Platform to manage and analyze data for AI applications, according to the company's website.

New York Mayor elections: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorses Zohran Mamdani

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorses Zohran Mamdani In a notable political development, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York City provided her support to Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani's mayoral campaign on Thursday. This endorsement represents a significant effort to unite progressive voters against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo's potential return. "Assembly Member Mamdani has demonstrated a real ability on the ground to put together a coalition of working-class New Yorkers that is strongest to lead the pack," Ocasio-Cortez said. "In the final stretch of the race, we need to get very real about that." With the June 24 Democratic primary approaching, Cuomo maintains his lead in polls, reminiscent of 2021's scenario when progressive disunity led to a moderate victory. Ocasio-Cortez, 35, selected Mamdani, 33, who shares similar characteristics: a Queens-based leftist representative who has gained substantial grassroots support through innovative policy proposals and effective social media presence. Mamdani's proposals include free city buses, rent stabilisation measures, and municipally operated grocery stores, funded through a £10 billion business and wealth tax. His stance on Israel has drawn attention from critics. Ocasio-Cortez emphasised the necessity of defeating Cuomo, whom she associates with wealthy interests. She announced her ranked-choice selections, placing Adrienne Adams second, Brad Lander third, followed by Scott Stringer and Zellnor Myrie. "Even if the entire left coalesced around any one candidate, an ideological coalition is still insufficient for us to win," Ocasio-Cortez said. "We have to have a true working-class coalition." While her endorsement carries weight among liberal groups, its impact remains uncertain. Mamdani has reached campaign fundraising limits and already secured substantial support from young, liberal voters. The Working Families Party's ranked choices largely align with Ocasio-Cortez's selections, suggesting some progressive unity. Upon receiving the endorsement after Wednesday's televised debate, Mamdani praised Ocasio-Cortez as a "once-in-a-generation leader." Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged challenges regarding Mamdani's experience and support among certain communities. Drawing from her own early political career, she expressed understanding of young leadership responsibilities while emphasising the need for appropriate expertise and support systems. Her endorsement decision may influence her political trajectory, as speculation continues about her potential presidential candidacy in 2028 or a possible Senate bid for Chuck Schumer's seat.

Looking to diversify from China, Apple gives Tata India iPhone repair business: Report

The market for repairs in India is expected to grow significantly as iPhone sales soar. The latest contract award demonstrates Apple's growing confidence in Tata as it establishes a foothold in a key market read more Apple has engaged Tata Group to manage repairs for iPhones and MacBook devices in the rapidly expanding Indian market. The move signals the Indian conglomerate's increasing role in the Apple's supply chain, Reuters cited two individuals familiar with the matter as saying. Tata takes on key role as Apple looks beyond China With Apple seeking partners beyond China for manufacturing, Tata has swiftly become a key supplier, already assembling iPhones for both local and foreign markets at three facilities in southern India, one of which also produces some iPhone components. In this latest partnership expansion, Tata is taking over the responsibility from an Indian unit of Taiwan's Wistron, ICT Service Management Solutions, and will handle after-sales repairs from its Karnataka iPhone assembly campus, both sources revealed. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The market for repairs in India is expected to grow significantly as iPhone sales soar. Counterpoint Research estimates that around 11 million iPhones were sold in India last year, giving Apple a 7 per cent market share, up from just 1 per cent in 2020. The latest contract award demonstrates Apple's growing confidence in Tata as it aims to secure more business from the world's most valuable smartphone company. Prabhu Ram, a vice president at Cybermedia Research, noted that Tata's deepening partnership with Apple could lay the groundwork for the US tech giant to sell refurbished devices directly in India, similar to its operations in the United States. The transition of responsibilities from ICT to Tata is currently underway, according to both sources. While Apple's official service centers across India can handle basic repairs, more complex issues will now be shipped to Tata's facility. However, Wistron's ICT will continue to service other clients excluding Apple, one of the sources mentioned. Amid the potential threat of US President Donald Trump's tariffs on China, India is also emerging as a favoured destination for iPhone exports. Apple CEO Tim Cook has stated that the majority of iPhones sold in the United States during the June quarter will be manufactured at factories in India.
