Why Mzansi must wait longer for the Toyota Hilux Legend 55
After initially planning to roll out the Toyota Hilux Legend 55 in July, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has pushed back the bakkie's introduction to August.
TSAM told The Citizen Motoring that the delay has been caused by 'production planning and the readiness of elements unique to the Legend 55'. The bakkie is built in the Toyota assembly plant in Prospecton alongside the Fortuner, Hiace, Corolla Cross and Corolla Quest.
The new instalment in Legend series arrives five years after the 50 and is likely the last special model of the bakkie's current generation as the new Toyota Hilux is expected in the next year or two.
Engine mystery
TSAM showcased a Legend 55 at its State of the Motor Industry address (SOMI) at Kyalami in January. While the bespoke styling enhancements were clear and some specification was divulged, the powertrain was said to be 'under discussion' at the time.
Until we get official word, the Toyota Hilux Legend 55 could feature any one of three mills. The current Legend comes in a choice of two engine options. The standard GD-6 2.8-litre turbodiesel; which produces 150kW of power and 500Nm of torque, and the 48V which adds mild electrical assistance to the same diesel mill to produce an additional 12kW/65Nm.

Another alternative in the stable is the uptuned version of GD-6 diesel engine used in the GR Sport (GR-S). It produces 165kW/550Nm and is only offered on the GR-S.
Styling upgrade for Toyota Hilux Legend 55
The one piece of hardware we can be certain of is the gearbox. Like all the mentioned engines, the Legend 55 will most certainly feature the same six-speed automatic transmission.
The Toyota Hilux Legend 55 features the same widebody and wide track suspension as the GR-S III. The model on display at SOMI featured bespoke alloy wheels. But these were not shod in all-terrain rubber like the GR-S.
The Toyota Hilux Legend 55 shown at SOMI featured black fog light bezels, grille and mirror caps. It also boasted a Legend 55 branded bash plate, extended wheels arches, side steps and new sports bar.
New interior details were given, but we expect a good dose of Legend 55 branding inside.

Toyota secures 24. 7% market share, dominating South Africa's vehicle sales landscape
The Toyota Hilux continued its dominating position in the South African market. Image: Supplied Despite South Africa's economic and operating environment challenges, the automotive industry is showing great resilience, with new vehicle sales reaching their highest level in almost six years following 10 months of growth. According to Naamsa, in July aggregate new vehicle sales amounted to 51,383 units, an impressive 15.6% increase from the 44,452 units sold in July 2024. Dominating Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) continues to reflect this, dominating the charge with a market share of 24.7%. They had the lion's share of the passenger car market, light commercial vehicles and medium commercial vehicles with 12,694 units, with Toyota moving 12,257, Lexus 84 and Hino 353 units. 'Although the current automotive landscape remains challenging, it is remarkable to witness our brand's consistent growth. The further reduction of the repo rate is much-welcomed relief - this will enable us to continue to serve many of our customers who trust and rely on our brands to move them forward,' said Leon Theron, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors. Corolla Cross The company's best-performing segment remains passenger cars, with 7,900 units sold. Displaying its steady performance, 1,949 Corolla Cross units found new homes whilst Starlet sales rebounded, recording 1,322 units. Maintaining an upward sales trend since the second quarter of 2025, the Fortuner and the Starlet Cross moved 984 units and 757 units, respectively. More than doubling its sales to 757 units, the Rumion returned as a stronger contender, in comparison to June 2025 (375 units). Despite the challenging premium luxury market, Lexus shifted a total of 84 units. The Lexus LX sold five more vehicles, signalling a keen interest in SUVs with hybrid technology. Image: Supplied Hilux still leads Toyota's star of the show remains the Hilux with 3,120 units sold in the light commercial vehicle segment, representing a segment market share of 26.8% and retains its title as South Africa's overall best seller. The Toyota Hiace is in fifth place with 545 units, and the Land Cruiser 79 Pick-up is in sixth place with 534 units. Moving 101 more units compared to June 2025 (186 units), the Land Cruiser Prado was also well in the mix. Toyota's Hino division continued its upward trajectory with a combined 353 new vehicle sales in July. Hino 500 and 700's combined sales increased to 158 units in comparison to June 2025. Toyota recorded 3,740 sales to business customers through its dealer network in July, the highest July result since 2019. The Toyota Vitz, Rumion, and Coaster each delivered their best monthly business sales performance of the year. In terms of parts, the division surpassed 2 million pieces in the domestic market and recorded 372,281 pieces exported to international markets. Toyota vehicle exports recorded a slight increase to 4,264 units, in comparison to June 2025.

Newly leaked sketch gives hint of ‘next' Toyota Hilux's interior
Set to retain the AN110 internal moniker, the Hilux will debut next year, not as a brand new generation. Its highly awaited world launch getting ever closer, a sketch drawing, supposedly that of the interior of the 'new generation' Toyota Hilux, has been unearthed in Thailand. Last spotted undergoing testing in June, the tentatively called Hilux Travo won't be an all-new model, but rather the most extensive update to the current eighth generation Hilux since its initial word reveal in 2016. Known so far Systematically rendered since the emergence of first spy shots at the beginning of the year, exterior differences spotted so far comprise new headlight clusters, a restyled grille, new front and rear bumpers, and Volkswagen Amarok-style vertical taillights clusters. ALSO READ: 'New' Toyota Hilux spied again as reported 2026 debut gets closer Unseen till now, allegations pertaining to the interior being derived from the Land Cruiser Prado have seemingly been confirmed as per the mentioned sketch uploaded by Centre to this is a freestanding infotainment display, a redesigned centre console complete with the Prado's gear lever, new air vents, a new digital instrument cluster and what appears to be a secondary display in front of the lever, presumably for the air-conditioning display. Image: Supporting the latter's inclusion is the perceived lack of a traditional heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) panel below the infotainment as per the dashboard being new. Retained are the pair of gloveboxes and starter button. Underneath Underneath, the Hilux will continue to ride on the IMV platform rather than switching to the newer TNGA-F that underpins the Prado, Land Cruiser 300, Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, Lexus GX and LX, but possibly with a number of tweaks. The same applies to the choice of engines, which will seemingly once again consist of the current 2.4 and 2.8 GD-6 turbodiesel engines, the latter with or without the 48-volt mild hybrid system. Unconfirmed is the possible inclusion of the Prado's eight-speed automatic gearbox in place of the current six, plus an overhauled series of safety and driver's assistance. More to follow… Initially tipped for unveiling in 2023 and then 2025, the Hilux is expected to formally debut early next year, with sales to start soon after. '[Hilux] is extremely important to us as a business and a company. It is the most important vehicle we manufacture and sell… it is our core model,' Toyota South Africa Motors President and CEO, Andrew Kirby, told The Citizen at the launch of the Prado in Mozambique last year. '[The next generation] will have exciting features and upgrades, I think our customers will enjoy'. ID.Buzz Cargo van gives glimpse of VW Kombi's electric future
And its cure little face won't look out of place next to Lightning McQueen in Cars. Awaiting the highly-anticipated local introduction of the all-new Volkswagen Transporter before the end of the year, we had a little taste of what the iconic VW Kombi can be like beyond in the incoming generation. The German carmaker has not yet availed electric vehicles (EVs) to the Mzansi public, despite a few of these undergoing local testing. Over the last few years, we've driven the eGolf, the ID.3 hatchback and ID.4 SUV. After undergoing testing in DHL's fleet in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, VW has now also given the media a taste of the We were quite excited over the prospect of driving another EV from the VW stable. Albeit only in Cargo guise and not the proper people mover the popular VW Kombi is best known for. In the case of the van, the 'Buzz' part is a light-hearted reference to the buzzing sound emitted from electric cars. It also serves as a link to the Volkswagen Type 2 bus on which its styling is based on. VW Kombi reimagined The Citizen Motoring thought the retro-meets-modern styling was very cool, and so did almost every onlooker. It gives real 'hippie vans' vibes along with modern touches. You will be forgiven for thinking the looks like a character out of the Cars animated movie. The shape of the LED headlights creates the impression of a pair of eyes; the VW logo forms a snub nose along with a nice wide smile in the pattern on the bumper. Rounding off the look are cute round cheeks. Rear barn doors provide access to almost four cubic metres of cargo space. Picture: Jaco van der Merwe The rear and sides of the all-white van with steel wheels and plastic rim covers with are less imaginative, but there is only so much you can do with a panel van. A passenger van version showcased at the Festival of Motoring last year featured very attractive two-tone paintwork along with two-tone alloy wheels. The impressive 3.9 cubic metre cargo hold, which are accessed through a sliding door on either side and double barn door opening tailgate, were not of much use to us other than children kitting it out with a camping mattress over the weekend. Simplistic cabin The very simplistic and industrial-like cabin, which will no doubt get plusher in a passenger offering, is in line with the ID.4 we sampled last year. A 5.3-inch instrument binnacle and 12.9-inch infotainment system take care of most information and entertainment. The usual set of buttons feature on the polyurethane steering wheel, with the gear shifter located Mercedes-Benz style on the right stalk. A few physical buttons remained for volume, climate control and side mirror adjustment, but other than that it was a very simplistic affair. One little oddity was the lack of a reverse camera, with the only offering rear parking sensors. As a solid bulkhead separates the cabin from the cargo hold, you would at least expect seeing what is behind a 4 712mm long vehicle while reversing. The cabin is tough enough for daily commercial use. Picture: Jaco van der Merwe The electric van features an 82kWh battery which sends 150kW of power and 310Nm to a rear electric motor. To put this into perspective, the current VW Kombi's 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine comes in three states of tune; 81kW, 110kW and 146kW. ALSO READ: Honest charm helps VW Kombi stand test of time packs a punch VW claims that the Cargo will sprint from 0 to 100km/h in a respectable 10.3 seconds. But because of the instant torque, it feels much faster. We gave a Ford Ranger Raptor owner a big fright when we managed to stay with the raucous bakkie bumper to bumper during acceleration when the light turned green. Much to the Raptor man's relief, the van's power started waning at the national limit. If you don't take on fast bakkies and manage to consume around 20kWh per 100km, you should get around 400km on a single charge. It also only took 30 minutes at a 120kW DC charger to take the battery up from 24% to 80%. Like with the ID.4, the drive is very easy and pleasant. We could just imagine how nice it will be to cruise around in a plusher passenger version of the taking the family on a cruise. The beloved VW Kombi reimagined for the future. A future that might not be all that far away.
