Bundesliga matchday 29 afternoon round-up: Bayer Leverkusen lose ground, Hoffenheim win big, and late goals galore
It was an action-packed afternoon of Bundesliga football on matchday 29. Here is your round-up of all afternoon games from this matchday.
Hoffenheim Should Be Safe
Hoffenheim captain Andrej Kramarić scored a first-half brace to earn TSG Hoffenheim a huge win 2-0 against Mainz 05. The win puts TSG in 14th on 30 points in what was their first victory in five Bundesliga matches. With a much nicer cushion on the bottom three, you feel that Hoffenheim will be sage this season. For Mainz, the loss means they've lost their top-four spot. Though any form of European football next season will be huge for them.
Leverkusen Lose Ground
Bayer Leverkusen have lost ground on Bayern Munich at the summit of the Bundesliga after a 0-0 draw with Union Berlin. The one positive for B04 was the return of Florian Wirtz, who has been out of action for five weeks through injury. Wirtz played the last 30 minutes but was unable to help them find a winner. Bayern now have the chance to extend their lead to eight points at the top if they beat Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker this evening. For Union, it's a big point away from home and leaves them on 34 points – you feel Union will be safe from here on out.
SC Freiburg Go 6th
SC Frieburg scored a late goal to ensure they leapfrog Gladbach into 6th. The game got off to a flying start, with both goals coming in the 14th and 16th minute. From there, however, it was a cagey affair. However, Johan Manzambi's 90th-minute header sent the away fans into ecstasy and give Freiburg a huge boost for their European hopes.
St. Pauli Win Relegation Battle
St. Pauli scored a 90th minute to beat Holstein Keil 1-2. It was a game that Keil could not lose, even a draw wouldn't be enough. However, St. Pauli scored a scrappy goal right at the death to surely ensure that Keil go down this season. For Pauli, they now go 7 points clear of the drop. This was also their first Bundesliga win after being a goal down.
Bochum Lose Late On
In the Ruhr region, Bochum lost to ten men FC Augsburg 1-2. Bochum were pushing for a winner, but a sucker punch right at the death inflicts more misery. For Bochum, it means they're still two points off FC Heidenheim who occupy the relegation play-off spot. Heidenheim play this Sunday against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Cody Gakpo comes clean on Bayern Munich offer
Liverpool have got ambitions to restructure their squad this summer - starting with Florian Wirtz. The 22-year-old Germany playmaker is a No10 by trade but can also occupy a left-sided attacking midfield position. His potential arrival could have an impact on several current Liverpool stars. Dominik Szoboszlai, for one, might consider his place under threat with Wirtz a rival for a central attacking position. Advertisement But Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo might also be looking over their shoulders. If Arne Slot opts to keep Szoboszlai where he currently plays - in order to get through his fair share of off-the-ball work - then Wirtz could end up being fielded from the left. And if the club are going to spend £126m on a new attacker, the expectation is that he will be a nailed-on starter. Where that leaves Diaz and Gakpo right now is anyone's guess. Gakpo a target for Bayern Diaz, 28, has been extensively linked with both Barcelona and Al-Nassr - with Liverpool seemingly willing to cash in if the right bid materialises. Advertisement Gakpo has also been associated with a move away and Bayern Munich are known to be keen amid uncertainty for attackers like Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman. Under contract until 2028, the 26-year-old is reported to be seeking a new deal from the Reds. However, if an attractive bid is made for the Dutchman then sporting director Richard Hughes could opt to take it under consideration. © IMAGO - Cody Gakpo Liverpool 2024-25 'Maybe my agents have heard', admits Gakpo The question of Gakpo's future was put to him recently on international duty - when the attacker featured in the Netherlands' 2-0 win over Finland. Does he see himself sticking with Liverpool? 'The way it looks now, definitely,' he said. ' I am in my place and I am happy. We have had a good season and as a team, as a club we are looking for more.' Advertisement He was then quizzed on Bayern's reported interest, stating that he is leaving all talks in the hands of his representatives. "I haven't heard anything about it myself. I've moved on from that,' he said. "Maybe my agents have heard something about it, but I haven't heard anything yet. As I just said, I'm focused on how things are now." Gakpo has been at Anfield since January 2023 and excelled for Arne Slot last season when placed in his correct position. He scored 18 goals and added seven assists in 49 appearances overall.

How Liverpool should spend $171M if Florian Wirtz transfer collapses
Liverpool's pursuit of Florian Wirtz seems to be heading in the right direction — but the longer the transfer saga drags on, the twitchier Reds fans will get over whether the German is actually destined for Anfield. Advertisement It's been several weeks now since it emerged that Wirtz had decided that he wanted to join Liverpool over Bayern Munich, and the Merseyside club has been working on wrapping up a deal ever since. Wirtz confirmed his excitement at the prospect of joining Liverpool last week, but given the sums involved — the attacker could become the third most-expensive player of all time — there is a risk of the transfer breaking down until the deal is officially confirmed. Similar players to Wirtz There are few players in world soccer who can hold a candle to Wirtz in his position, and all of them would cost an absolute fortune — but Liverpool is willing to spend an absolute fortune on Wirtz, so the likelihood is that the Reds would also be willing to do exactly that to sign another player of the German's caliber. Of the world's attacking midfielders, only Jude Bellingham — who was previously linked with Liverpool — has a higher market value ($205 million) than Wirtz, according to Transfermarkt, and there is little chance of him leaving Real Madrid this summer. Advertisement Cole Palmer and Martin Odegaard are among the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League but there is no chance Liverpool would be able to convince either Chelsea or Arsenal to part with either player. Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers and Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze could be more attainable, while RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons has been linked with Liverpool in the past and the Reds could turn their attention to him. Advertisement Liverpool has already signed a new right-sided player in Jeremie Frimpong, but a left-back — specifically Milos Kerkez — is also on the agenda. The Reds could also look to strengthen in the center of Arne Slot's defense amid the uncertainty over the futures of Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah.
