Mother of man slain for opening wrong car door calls killer's plea deal a ‘slap in the face'
The man who shot and killed a father-to-be who opened up the wrong car door at a gas station signed a plea deal this week. The Fulton County District Attorney's Office offered Dericole Daniel a 25-year sentence, in which he will spend a fraction of that in jail. 'That was a slap in the face to us,' said Tibitha Dunnaville. 'Like my son was not worthy of this world, and I am not happy.' Her son, Trayvon Dunnaville, 26, died Dec. 12, 2022. He and his pregnant fiancée stopped at a Shell gas station on Old National Highway near Jonesboro Rd. after he finished work. He went inside the store to buy something. She waited in the car. When he came back outside, he accidentally walked up to a car similar to his fiancée's at a nearby gas pump and opened the door. That's when the driver of that car, Daniel, shot him four times. 'I'm quite sure there's plenty of people that done walked to the wrong car, but they didn't get shot and killed,' said Dunnaville. RELATED STORIES: Mother wants justice for son killed opening wrong door at South Fulton gas station A man got in the wrong car outside a metro Atlanta gas station, now he's dead Daniel's defense attorney, Jasmine Blake-Stewart, sent Channel 2 a statement that said in part, 'Mr. Daniel reasonably believed he was about to get robbed, and was in fear of his life, so he discharged his firearm that he was legally in possession of.' Daniel's attorney said a Grand Jury initially charged him with Felony Murder, a charge that carries a life sentence. So, when prosecutors offered him a deal to plead guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter, he took it. As part of the 25-year sentence, he will spend five years in jail and 20 years on probation. The judge said he can cut the probation short for good behavior. 'Then, the judge ask him when do he want to turn himself in. I never heard that a day in my life,' Dunnaville said. The plea deal allows Daniel to self-report to Fulton County Jail by Sept. 2. Former prosecutors said that is an unusual condition in deadly criminal cases like these. The embarrassing trend of people throwing sex toys on WNBA courts continued in Chicago on Thursday night right before the end of the Sky's game against the Atlanta Dream. Ahead of the final buzzer in Atlanta's win over Chicago, a purple sex toy hit the court, thankfully in a place well away from any WNBA Office Sports reporter Colin Salao observed two sex toys were thrown from the crowd, with one landing near the Dream bench and the other hitting the actual game court. Multiple similar incidents have taken place at WNBA games within the last week, with a cryptocurrency group alleging it sparked the trend earlier in the day. We're not sure how many more incidents will happen, but it looks like the churlish morons who think this is still funny will keep disrupting WNBA games with sex toys. Allegheny County Jail corrections officer fired over racist video
Allegheny County Correctional Officer Brian Davis has been fired after he appeared in a video showing him using racial slurs, county officials confirmed on Thursday. Davis' firing came less than a month after he was suspended. In the video, he used the N-word while holding a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire that says "[N-word] beater." Now, Allegheny County Jail officials are also looking into other complaints about Davis made by inmates, Warden Trevor Wingard said. "It needed to happen," Allegheny County Council and Allegheny County Jail Oversight Board Member Bethany Hallam said of the firing. "It was a sense of relief that finally we're seeing some accountability for the people who are abusing the incarcerated individuals on a regular basis." She's spent time behind bars. It's part of what fuels her passion for the topic. "In the past, we have seen horrible displays of racism, misogyny, and nothing had happened in the past," Hallam said. But this time, she said something did happen. Hallam sees it as part of a positive trend at the jail. "I think for the first time, when you have a county executive and a warden and a jail administration and a jail oversight board who also clearly want the same thing, which is the jail to be the least toxic, actually rehabilitative place that it can be, they move so quickly," Hallam said. She was surprised by how quickly Davis was fired after the video came to light. "It's not becoming of someone anywhere to be using racial slurs, but especially someone who is responsible for keeping folks safe in a carceral setting, especially like the Allegheny County Jail, where a disproportionate number of folks in the jail are Black, are Black men, and is he using that word against them?" Hallam said. KDKA reached out to the union representing correctional officers to see if it is appealing the decision, but KDKA did not hear back on Thursday night.
