Tasman Targets Anti-Social Road Users
From Wednesday 28 May to Sunday 1 June 2025, Tasman Police delivered an operation focused on anti-social road users.
This was in response to an increase in complaints from the local community.
Two search warrants were executed, resulting in a stolen firearm being located and three vehicle impounds for sustained loss of traction and driver licence offences.
Further Police activities occurred across the district with Tasman Police staff supported by the Anti-Social Road User team from Christchurch.
The team deployed across Nelson Bays and Marlborough resulting in over 50 vehicles being inspected and deemed unsafe or defective.
Five more vehicles were impounded for Land Transport Act offences.
Over 100 Infringement notices were issued for speeding, restraint and distraction offences amongst many others.
Following the operation, Police have laid charges against multiple individuals for unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, sustained loss of traction, driving whilst suspended, driving whilst disqualified and threatening behaviour. Further charges are being considered.

LynnMall attack inquest: Police set to give evidence

The coronial inquest into the death of LynnMall attacker Ahamed Samsudeen continues on Wednesday, after a forensic pathologist explained why he had zero chance of surviving as many as a dozen gunshot wounds . Samsudeen stabbed four women and one man with a kitchen knife at a Countdown supermarket in Auckland's New Lynn in 2021, before being shot and killed by police. Two others were injured trying to stop him from harming others. Forensic pathologist Dr Kilak Kesha conducted the post-mortem on Samsudeen after his death. He told the inquest the attacker died quickly from the gunshot wounds, describing four of them as rapidly fatal because they pierced vital organs. Kesha described a bullet that passed through the left side of Samsudeen's chest, while being questioned by police counsel Alysha McClintock. "That's one of the wounds that you considered may have been among those the most rapidly fatal?" McClintock asked. 'Yes, because it passed through the spleen, and the intestines," Kesha said. Kesha described some of the other gunshot wounds and the impact these had on Samsudeen's body. "It passed through the heart, the lungs, causing significant bleeding. This one passed through the aorta, the liver, the stomach, and small bowel, causing blood to accumulate in the abdomen." Ross Tomlinson. Photo: RNZ/Marika Khabazi Earlier in the inquest, survivor Ross Tomlinson described how he used nappies from the supermarket shelves to help with Samsudeen's wounds after he was shot . A former paramedic with a decade's experience, he said he believed Samsudeen could not have been saved. McClintock asked Kesha what impact as many as a dozen gunshot wounds would have. "Is there anything else that you would add about the overall impact on the human body of receiving a total of potentially up to 12 gunshot wounds?" she said. "After the autopsy, looking at all the injuries, survivability is zero," Kesha replied. Coroner Marcus Elliott asked about Samsudeen's movements in the moments after he was shot. "Death is not instantaneous - it takes time to bleed, your heart's got to pump and that blood's got to be lost through the broken vessels," Kesha said. "People can walk, they can stumble, they can take a few steps, it depends how rapidly the blood is lost." "So if he had formed the intention at that point to charge, to use that word, it would have been possible for him to do so?" Elliott asked, with Kesha responding that was correct. Residents at Wellington Council flats stressed by Oliver Hayes' unexplained death

Photo: RNZ / REECE BAKER A community co-ordinator in the Wellington Council-run apartment block where a dubstep musician was found dead said residents were apprehensive and stressed by the unexplained death. Police confirmed they were investigating after 40 year-old musician Oliver Hayes was found dead in the Newtown Park Apartments on Saturday. Liz Heta said she had to be careful when talking about his death among the tenants. "Just not knowing what happened is the biggest thing. They feel that they're just left wondering what happened. If someone starts up a conversation and one of these people are here I will shut it down because this person's going to go back to their flat and be upset all night. It's a bit much sometimes," Heta said. Heta said Hayes was the second person to die in the flats in the last fortnight, after another resident suffered a heart attack earlier in the week. A long-time Newtown resident - who did not want to be named - said the large police presence investigating Hayes' death was upsetting for children in the neighbourhood. She said loud or disruptive behaviour was not uncommon in the area, but the flats were also home to a vibrant and diverse community. "It's really, really sad. I feel sad for my friends at the flat. I feel sad for Newtown because Newtown's a beautiful place. It's a diverse place and that's why we love it," she said. The resident said - despite regular police callouts to the flats - the number of police in the neighbourhood on Saturday showed that something serious had happened. Musicians and friends took to social media to pay tribute to Hayes describing him as a pioneer in the Drum n Bass and Dub-step scene in New Zealand and Australia. One artist who did not want to be named called him a "true icon for sound production" and the "most badass producer of bass music this side of the globe has ever seen". Police were called to the death on Mansfield Street at around 7.15pm. In a post on social media his sister Louise Hayes said her brother, who was also known as Olie Bassweight, had been found unexpectedly dead on Saturday. "There is a police investigation. It seems something terrible might have happened to him. We wait for answers." Louise said Olie had touched many with his music, philosophy, curiosity and passion. "His light was like no other. We are heartbroken and thrown into tumultuous grief and shock. I don't know what else to say." Police said their inquires into the circumstance surrounding Hayes's death were ongoing. "Police are appealing for anyone who knew Mr Hayes and who had recent contact with him, to please contact us immediately. "Police would also like to speak to anyone who may have seen Mr Hayes in the days prior to Saturday evening, in particular residents of the apartment complex who may have seen him moving about." Gunman kills at least nine in attack on Austrian secondary school

Photo: AFP / ERWIN SCHERIAU A gunman killed at least nine people in an attack at a secondary school in the southern Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday. Police said the attacker was also killed and that a number of people had been injured. They did not say how many of the dead were pupils. Police did not publicly identify the killer but said they were working on the assumption that he acted alone. Austrian media cited unconfirmed reports saying he was a former pupil who had entered the school and opened fire on pupils. "The rampage at a school in Graz is a national tragedy that has deeply shaken our entire country," Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker said in a statement. "There are no words for the pain and grief that we all - all of Austria - are feeling right now." A local police spokesman said the area had been secured, the school had been evacuated and relatives of the victims and pupils were being cared for. Emergency workers could be seen loading a stretcher into an ambulance in video from the scene. In reports that Reuters could not immediately verify, the Kurier and Salzburger Nachrichten newspapers identified the suspect as a 22-year-old former student. Salzburger Nachrichten said he had been a victim of bullying. He carried a pistol and a shotgun and opened fire on pupils in two classrooms, one of which had once been his classroom. The Kronen Zeitung tabloid said a suspect had been found dead in a bathroom. Police were called to the scene at around 10 am (8pm NZST) after shots were heard at the school. Julia Ebner, an extremism expert at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue think tank, said the incident appeared to be the worst school shooting in Austria's post-war history, describing such shootings as rare compared to some countries including the United States. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on X: "Every child should feel safe at school and be able to learn free from fear and violence. My thoughts are with the victims, their families and the Austrian people in this dark moment." Austria has one of the most heavily armed civilian populations in Europe, with an estimated 30 firearms per 100 persons, according to the Small Arms Survey, an independent research project. Machine guns and pump action guns are banned, while revolvers, pistols and semi-automatic weapons are allowed only with official authorization. Rifles and shotguns are permitted with a firearms license or a valid hunting licence, or for members of traditional shooting clubs. Four people were killed and 22 injured when a convicted jihadist went on a shooting spree in the centre of Vienna in 2020. In November 1997, a 36-year-old mechanic shot dead six people in the town of Mauterndorf before killing himself. - Reuters
