Actor Darshan, four others remanded in central prison on a day of high drama

After nearly 10 months of the bail period, Kannada film actor Darshan and four others were arrested by the Annapoorneshwari Nagar police for the third time. They were remanded in custody at the Central Prison of Parappana Agrahara on Thursday after the Supreme Court (SC) cancelled their bail. The police, following the SC order, arrested Pavithra Gowda, the prime accused in the case, at her house in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, and three other accused, namely Pradosh from Girinagar, Lakshman from RPC Layout, and Nagaraj from Mysuru. Hearing on Aug. 23 All the accused were subjected to medical examination before being escorted, amidst tight security, to the judge's residence. The judge ordered them to be sent to judicial custody and posted the next hearing for August 23. The other two accused, Anukumar and Jagadeesh, arrested from Chitradurga, will be produced before the court on Friday, S. Girish, DCP, West Division, supervising the development, said. Darshan was arrested from his wife's apartment in Hosakerehalli, where he had come to see his son. According to sources, Darshan, to avoid the media glare, changed vehicles and shifted from his SUV into another car and entered the apartment by the back door. The police, who were present at the apartment, arrested him and brought him to the Annapoorneshwari Nagar police station, where the other accused were housed. Family members, including Darshan's and Pavithra's mothers, accompanied them to the station. Strict vigil The prison officials have made elaborate security arrangements inside the prison to house Darshan and Pavithra Gowda, considering the earlier episode of security lapses. The apex court, while rejecting the bail, warned of strict action against officials if the accused is found to have special privileges.

SC dissolves marriage, orders man to pay ₹1.25 crore alimony to wife

New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Thursday dissolved the marriage between an estranged couple and directed the man to pay ₹1.25 crore as permanent alimony to the estranged wife. SC dissolves marriage, orders man to pay ₹ 1.25 crore alimony to wife A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said the couple was living separately since 2010 and the man had remarried in March 2017. "We see no purpose in continuing the legal relationship between the parties. The marriage has irretrievably broken down," the bench said. The verdict came on an appeal filed by the man against an August 2018 order of the Madras High Court which allowed the woman's plea and set aside the decree of divorce granted by a family court in October 2016. The top court, however, said, "It is evident that there is no possibility of reconciliation between the parties. They have been living separately since 2010, for nearly 15 years. There is no vestige of matrimonial relationship between them, and neither party has shown any inclination to resolve their differences." Finding it a fit case to grant divorce, the bench invoked its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution. The top court also found it proper to award a one-time lump sum as permanent alimony to the woman and their son. It was brought to the court's attention that the man had not provided financial support during the years of the legal battle. "We direct the appellant to pay a sum of ₹1.25 crore as permanent alimony and all other claims of the wife would stand satisfied," it said. The bench said a decree should be drawn upon furnishing of proof before the apex court registry that the payment has been made. The amount was directed to be paid in five equal quarterly instalments of ₹25 lakhs each. "It is further directed that in the event of any default in payment of any instalment, this order shall stand recalled, and any amount already paid by the appellant-husband shall stand forfeited," the bench said. The top court noted the marriage between the parties was solemnised in February 2009 and shortly thereafter, they relocated to the US where the husband was employed. It said the man instituted a divorce petition in September 2012 seeking dissolution of marriage on the grounds of alleged cruelty and adultery. The bench noted a family court in October 2016 granted a decree of divorce on the ground of cruelty while the allegation of adultery was not proved. Actor Darshan arrested in Renukaswamy murder case after Supreme Court cancels his bail

Kannada actor Darshan Thogudeepa and actress Pavithra Gowda were arrested on Thursday after the Supreme Court cancelled their bail in the Renukaswamy murder case. Darshan was arrested at his wife Vijayalakshmi's house in Hosakerehalli in Bengaluru. The actor wanted to evade arrest and surrender in court, but the police got information about his stay and arrested him, reported PTI quoting sources. The SC observed that persons regardless of popularity are equal before the law. It directed the authorities to take Darshan and other accused into custody forthwith and ordered that the trial be conducted expeditiously. A Supreme Court bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan quashed the interim bail granted to Darshan by the Karnataka High Court, stating that the bail was granted without adequate consideration of the witness intimidation and other illegalities. The Karnataka government had moved the top court against Darshan's bail order. In a reaction to Thursday's order, advocate DL Chidananda, representing the state government, said the SC stated that the Karnataka HC's decision did not follow the principles of granting bail. Chidananda told ANI: "The Supreme Court said that the High Court has not followed the principles of law which apply for granting bail. It also reiterated that the rule of law prevails in the country and, however influential an individual may be, they must be treated in accordance with the law." Pavithra Gowda, the prime accused in Renukaswamy murder case, was arrested from her house soon after the news broke that the bail of all the accused in the murder case was cancelled, according to news agency PTIciting police sources. Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister's legal advisor, AS Ponnanna, said that granting Darshan bail would have hampered the investigation and trial. He said: "The state government and the prosecution agency were vindicated... It was the state government's decision that, in a case like this, where a serious offence has been registered, granting him bail would hamper the investigation and trial, as he is a powerful person. They did not want him to use his muscle to derail the prosecution's case." According to media reports, 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan of actor Darshan, had allegedly sent obscene messages to Gowda, which enraged Darshan, allegedly leading to his murder. His body was found near a stormwater drain next to an apartment in Sumanahalli in Bengaluru on June 9, 2024. Raghavendra, one of the accused who is part of Darshan's fan club in Chitradurga, had brought Renukaswamy to a shed in RR Nagar in Bengaluru, on the pretext that the actor wanted to meet him. It was in this shed that he was allegedly tortured and killed.
