Arion Carter's leadership with Tennessee football detailed
Following the Vols' third practice on Aug. 2, linebackers coach William Inge discussed Arion Carter entering his third season at Tennessee in 2025.
'I think that what you see, he's been probably consistent,' Inge said. 'It's still been the same scenario. When you come here in the morning, he'll be the first one here, you come here at night, he'll be the last one leaving, and now, I think from a leadership standpoint, what he's done has really turned into the player-led organization part of the program where he's making sure the rest of the guys are doing some of those same things.
'It's not just him dealing with the linebackers, but him also dealing with the secondary, the d-line, the o-line and just his communication that he has around the guys on the team. That's what you want when you take the next step in leadership. He's also doing the same thing. We talk all the time where, in order for you to be a dominant linebacker or dominant player that is known, it is about leadership and production, and he is producing on the field as well.'
The 6-foot-1, 235-pound junior linebacker appeared in 21 games for the Vols from 2023-24. Carter totaled 85 tackles, including 37 solo and 48 assists, 7.5 tackles for a loss, one interception and eight pass deflections.

Is Rory McIlroy playing this week to start PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs?
Rory McIlroy found a loophole in the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs, and it has become an awkward subplot this week when golf's version of the postseason begins at the 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. The 2025 Masters champion said months ago he wanted to play less in 2025, and even hinted at the unorthodox move he might make to follow through on that promise. "I'll probably not play the first playoff event in Memphis," McIlroy told The Telegraph in November 2024. "I mean, I finished basically dead last there this year (tied for 68th in a 70-man field) and only moved down one spot in the playoff standings.' McIlroy has appeared in just 14 PGA Tour events this year after playing in 19 tournaments in 2024, but still ranks No. 2 behind Scottie Scheffler in the FedEx Cup standings. Since he began playing extensively on the PGA Tour in 2009, McIlroy has averaged 16 events per year. So did he follow through on his decision to not start the FedEx Cup playoffs in Memphis? Here's the latest on McIlroy's status heading into the FedEx Cup playoffs and the 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship: RYDER CUP RANKINGS: New PGA Tour winner Cameron Young moves up in latest U.S. team standings Is Rory McIlroy playing at FedEx St. Jude Championship? No. McIlroy was not included on the official field list for the 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship, beginning Thursday, Aug. 7 at TPC Southwind in Memphis. His decision to skip the tournament means the field will be set at 69 golfers instead of 70. The top 50 golfers advance to the next round of the FedEx Cup playoffs at the BMW Championships in Owings Mills, Maryland on Aug 14-17. The PGA Tour also eliminated the stroke advantage for the Tour Championship that concludes its FedEx Cup playoffs this year. Instead of giving golfers with the most FedEx Cup points an advantage in the Tour Championship, all golfers will start from even par. In the past, the stroke advantage had made the first two FedEx Cup events more important because they helped determine starting position at East Lake. Why is Rory McIlroy not playing? In September, when McIlroy initially told reporters he wanted to decrease his playing schedule, he noted that he "hit a wall" during the 2024 season. He wound up skipping notable PGA Tour events like The Sentry, the RBC Heritage and Jack Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament this season. "It's been a long season, and I'm going to just have to think about trying to build in a few extra breaks here and there next year and going forward because I felt like I hit a bit of a wall sort of post-U.S. Open, and still feel a little bit of that hangover," McIlroy said last September. He noted at the time that he planned to play 18 to 20 tournaments in 2025. By November, McIlroy had pinpointed the first playoff event in Memphis as one of those additional breaks. He also leads third-place Sepp Straka by more than 800 points in the FedEx Cup standings and already clinched a spot in the BMW Championship next week. Preseason US LBM Coaches Poll breakdown by conference
Big Ten is second to SEC in preseason coaches poll You know the start of a new college football season is just weeks away when the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll hits the wire. Perhaps to the surprise of nobody in this day and age, the Big Ten and SEC claimed a combined 15 of the 25 spots in this season's preseason ranking. With Notre Dame filling one of the spots, that left just nine additional spots in the preseason coaches poll to be filled by the other conferences. Here is a look at how each conference was represented in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll for the 2025 season. Mountain West Conference: 1 team No. 25 Boise State After representing the Mountain West Conference in the College Football Playoff last season, Boise State is looking to do so one more time before heading off to the Pac-12 next year. The Broncos are the only school from one of the non-power conferences to make an appearance in the preseason coaches poll. ACC: 3 teams No. 6 Clemson, No. 10 Miami, No. 16 SMU The ACC landed three teams in this year's preseason coaches poll. The two teams that played for the ACC title last year, Clemson and SMU, and Miami all earned a preseason ranking from the coaches. Clemson, the defending ACC champion, leads the conference with the No. 6 ranking. Big 12: 5 teams No. 11 Arizona State, No. 20 Kansas State, 21 Iowa State, No. 23 BYU, No. 24 Texas Tech The Big 12 comes in heavy toward the bottom of the top 25 ranking, but Arizona State comes just shy of a top-10 preseason ranking. The Sun Devils, the defending Big 12 champions, are coming off a surprise College Football Playoff appearance last season and are looking to prove it was no fluke in their second year in their new conference home. Big Ten: 6 teams No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Penn State, No. 7 Oregon, No. 12 Illinois, No. 14 Michigan, No. 19 Indiana The Big Ten is well-represented in the preseason coaches poll with six members ranked, and three within the top-10. Ohio State and Penn State take two of the top-three spots in the poll, while defending Big Ten champion Oregon comes in at no. 7 to start the season. Indiana earned the respect of the voters after their run to a playoff spot last season. Illinois does not look like quite the under-the-radar team some may have counted on them being this season, with a very respectable preseason ranking in the top-15, a couple of spots ahead of Michigan. SEC: 9 teams No. 1 Texas, No. 4 Georgia, No. 8 Alabama, No. 9 LSU, No. 13 South Carolina, No. 15 Ole Miss, No. 17 Florida, No. 18 Tennessee, No. 21 Texas A&M The SEC leads all conferences with nine schools ranked in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll this season, with the Texas Longhorns leading the way at the top of the poll overall with 28 first-place votes. The SEC has made a habit of filling the most spots in the preseason rankings over the years, so it is no surprise to see that be the case this season as the conference came within 25 points of getting the 25th-ranked team at the bottom (Oklahoma was beat out by Boise State for the last spot). Of course, the preseason rankings are one thing. The Big Ten had two semifinal teams in the playoff last year and has had the national champion each of the past two seasons. And the stage is officially set for a Week 1 battle between the top two teams in the country when Ohio State faces Texas. The Big Ten vs. SEC talk will be piping hot all week for that one.
