Iraq gains UN tourism leadership role

Shafaq News14-02-2025

Shafaq News/ Iraq was elected on Friday, as the deputy chair of the Middle East Committee at the United Nations World Tourism Organization.
In its official statement, the country's tourism authority stated that Iraq secured the deputy chairmanship, during the 51st meeting of the committee, an event also attended by the Arab Ministers of Tourism as well as officials from several member states.
'This is a significant achievement for Iraq,' said Nasser Ghanem Murad, head of the Tourism Authority, who led the Iraqi delegation. 'It reflects our growing presence on the regional tourism map and paves the way for stronger partnerships with our neighbors.'
The meeting also served as a platform to promote Iraq's tourism potential, as the country aims to attract $7 billion in tourism investments by 2025. The delegation held discussions with officials from several Arab countries to explore opportunities for cooperation and future projects in the tourism sector.
During the event, the Iraqi representatives distributed souvenirs to participants, including copies of the booklet "Baghdad: Arab Tourism Capital 2025", as well as carpets decorated with images of historical and archaeological sites, and medals bearing the logo of Baghdad as the Arab capital of culture and tourism.
Notably, Iraq is preparing to host several events marking Baghdad's selection as the Arab Tourism Capital in 2025.

Iraq sets New Guidelines for Awarding Investment Licences

By John Lee. Ahead of the upcoming Iraq Investment Forum scheduled for Saturday, the Iraqi Cabinet has approved a set of legal and procedural mechanisms governing the presentation and awarding of investment opportunities. The Council of Ministers issued the following decisions: Adoption of competitive evaluation criteria in cases where multiple companies apply for the same investment opportunity. If only one reputable company with relevant experience applies during the announcement period, the opportunity will be awarded to it. An investment opportunity will be considered announced and exempt from further advertisement if no applications are received; any subsequent applicant may complete licensing procedures in accordance with the law. Authorisation of the National Investment Commission (NIC) and all provincial investment commissions to issue investment licences and sign related contracts. According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, these measures aim to streamline the investment process and enhance the efficiency and transparency of project allocation. Oil jumps more than 7% as Israel strikes Iran, rattling investors

Shafaq News/ Oil prices jumped more than 7% on Friday, hitting their highest in months after Israel said it struck Iran, dramatically escalating tensions in the Middle East and raising worries about disrupted oil supplies. Brent crude futures rose $5.29, or 7.63%, to $74.65 a barrel by 0142 GMT after hitting an intraday high of $75.32, the highest since April 2. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up $5.38, or 7.91%, at $73.42 a barrel after hitting a high of $74.35, the loftiest since February 3. Israel said early on Friday that it struck Iran, and Iranian media said explosions were heard in Tehran as tensions mounted over U.S. efforts to win Iran's agreement to halt production of material for an atomic bomb. "The Israeli attack on Iran has heightened the risk premium further," MST Marquee senior energy analyst Saul Kavonic said. "The conflict would need to escalate to the point of Iranian retaliation on oil infrastructure in the region before oil supply is actually materially impacted," he said, adding that Iran could hinder up to 20 million barrels per day of oil supply via attacks on infrastructure or limiting passage through the Strait of Hormuz in an extreme scenario. Israel's strikes on Iran are aimed at hurting its nuclear infrastructure, its ballistic missile factories and many of its military capabilities, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday called Israel's strikes against Iran a "unilateral action" and said Washington was not involved while also urging Tehran not to target U.S. interests or personnel in the region. "Iran has announced an emergency and is preparing to retaliate, which raises the risk of not just disruptions but of contagion in other neighbouring oil producing nations too," said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at Phillip Nova. "Although Trump has shown reluctance to participate, U.S. involvement could further raise concerns." In other markets, stocks dived in early Asian trade, led by a selloff in U.S. futures, while investors scurried to safe havens such as gold and the Swiss franc. IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said the alarming escalation is a blow to risk sentiment in financial markets. "While we await further news and a potential response from Iran, we are likely to see a further deterioration in risk sentiment as traders cut risk-seeking positions ahead of the weekend," he added.

US sanctions top Iraqi faction leaders

Shafaq News/ On Thursday, the US Treasury Department imposed new sanctions on Nasser al-Shammari, Deputy Secretary-General of Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba (HHN), as well as two other Iran-backed Iraqi paramilitary groups—Kataib al-Imam Ali and Kataib Ruh Allah Isa Ibn Maryam—as part of an ongoing campaign to curb destabilizing activities linked to Tehran's regional network. The sanctions, issued by the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), will freeze any assets the designated individuals and entities hold under US jurisdiction and generally prohibit Americans from engaging in financial transactions with them. According to the Treasury, the sanctions aim to disrupt the financial and operational capabilities of these factions, which have been involved in attacks on US forces and continue to operate outside the control of the Iraqi state. Al-Shammari, a senior figure in HHN—a US-designated terrorist group and prominent member of the so-called "Axis of Resistance"—joins a list of sanctioned individuals already including the group's leader, Akram al-Kaabi. HHN has been accused of direct involvement in targeting US personnel in Iraq and Syria. The move also extends to Kataib al-Imam Ali, an armed group closely tied to Lebanese Hezbollah, and its offshoot, Kataib Ruh Allah Isa Ibn Maryam. Both groups have played roles in Syria and Iraq, with the latter notable for recruiting Christian fighters, particularly from the Syriac and Assyrian communities, according to the Washington Institute. US Congressman Joe Wilson welcomed the sanctions, but called for further steps—urging the Trump administration to add the Badr Organization to the sanctions list. Wilson described Badr as sharing 'the same DNA' with other sanctioned groups and warned of its entrenched influence in Iraq's political and security landscape. The Badr Organization is one of the most established Iran-backed factions in Iraq. Although it operates under the umbrella of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), Badr also holds significant political power in the Iraqi parliament and government. Despite its longstanding ties to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), it has so far avoided direct US sanctions.
