‘So many people do it': Police, advocates warn of drunk driving dangers this Super bowl weekend
With parties, bars, and restaurants ready to go for Super Bowl Weekend, police are reminding everyone who decided to drink to designate a driver.
Massachusetts State Police told Boston 25 they are increasing crews and checkpoints across state roads.
Boston 25 Security Analyst Dan Linskey called it one of the most dangerous weekends for drivers.
'Superbowl has a tradition of having a number of issues,' Linskey said Saturday. '[State police] are going to have a lot of traffic enforcement units, and they're going to be looking for people who are driving inappropriately and find if they're impaired or not.'
The former superintendent-in-chief of Boston Police also said OUI checkpoints will be more common this Sunday.
He added, 'They're going to stop traffic, slow down, present your ID, and they're going to make an assessment or not if you need to go to secondary screening.'
Matthew Shedd, the former chairman of Massachusetts Mothers Against Drunk Driving, implored those drinking to make the smart decision.
'We don't say don't drink we say don't drink and drive,' he said. 'It sounds easy, but so many people don't do it.'
Mothers Against Drunk Driving is a nationwide organization whose mission is to end impaired driving once and for all.
Shedd's daughter, Hilary, was killed in a drunk driving crash in 1991 while driving down to Washington DC with friends.
Shedd says his daughter was in the back seat, lying down without a seatbelt on in the parked car on the side of the highway. A drunk driver, he said, slammed into the back of their car while they were checking their map.
He explained, 'She became a missile. Her head hit the windshield, and she died six days later.'
Last week was the 34th anniversary of our passing, and the Shedd family is still mourning.
They're imploring those who drink this weekend to stay off the roads – to avoid more preventable tragedies.
He finished, 'It isn't just one or two people that are involved. It's many… You never know when that incident will happen that will cause you to do something you didn't intend to do.'
Linskey also reminded drivers who didn't drink to operate cautiously this Sunday, especially at night.

The detainment of Lame comes as the Trump administration called for the military to be deployed against anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. The protests, which began in response to raids on Friday, escalated over the weekend after Trump ordered the deployment of National Guard troops into the city. Gov. Gavin Newsom requested on Sunday that Trump revoke his federalization of the National Guard and withdraw them from the city. 'The decision to deploy the National Guard, without appropriate training or orders, risks seriously escalating the situation,' he wrote. 'There is currently no need for the National Guard to be deployed in Los Angeles, and to do so in this unlawful manner and for such a lengthy period is a serious breach of state sovereignty that seems intentionally designed to inflame the situation.' Accused MS-13 gang member arrested after traffic stop in southeastern Mass., ICE says
A Salvadoran national who federal authorities say is an MS-13 gang member is now in federal custody after state police pulled him over during a traffic stop in Middleboro. William Alberto Villalobos-Melendez, 24, who is in the United States illegally, was arrested in Brockton on May 14, one day after state police in Middleboro charged him with unlicensed driving and using an electronic device while driving, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement on Monday. Federal officials on Monday released an arrest photograph showing Villalobos-Melendez, who is in handcuffs and wearing a green Boston Celtics T-shirt, with three federal officers. 'William Alberto Villalobos-Melendez has been illegally residing in the United States for almost nine years,' ICE Enforcement and Removal Boston Acting Field Office Director Patricia Hyde said in a statement. 'He is a validated member of a violent transnational street gang and poses a threat to our Massachusetts residents,' Hyde said. 'ICE Boston will not tolerate any threat that a member of a nefarious gang poses to our neighbors. We will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting criminal alien threats to our New England communities.' Officers with ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston working with agents from ICE Homeland Security Investigations New England and FBI Boston arrested Villalobos-Melendez, Hyde said. He will remain in ICE custody pending his removal from the United States. Fort Myers man accused of homicide also fired into several occupied apartments, police say
Authorities have released new details about a Fort Myers homicide, revealing that the suspected killer fired into several occupied apartments June 8. Yanko Romero, 41, of Fort Myers, faces charges of shooting into a building; aggravated assault; second-degree murder; and tampering with evidence. Shortly before 8:50 a.m. June 8, Fort Myers Police officers responded to reports of gunfire at 3000 Oasis Grand Blvd. — the address of the Oasis waterfront high-rise condo tower off Palm Beach Boulevard, east of downtown Fort Myers. The site is along the Caloosahatchee River. Guilty verdict: Lehigh Acres man convicted of fatal drug sale; co-defendant awaits trial When officers arrived at a nearby parking lot, they found a 25-year-old man, who suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite first responders' efforts, the victim died on scene. The victim's identity remained unreleased by publication. Authorities said Romero and the victim did not know each other. Police said additional officers responded near the WINK News building after they received information that witnesses saw Romero nearby. Authorities said that prior to his arrest, Romero was observed discarding a firearm into pond. Officers, during a search of a bag in his possession, found a loaded ammunition magazine and a box containing more rounds. Police determined Romero fired multiple rounds into several occupied apartments. The Lee County Sheriff's Office's Underwater Operations Unit assisted police in their investigation. Assistant State Attorney Sara Miller on June 9 filed a motion for pretrial detention, but a hearing date and time was not set by publication. Megan Fuentes, spokesperson for Fort Myers Police, said they have had four homicides so far this year, two of which they have ruled self-defense.
