Shane Warne and his love for pizzas, son Jackson explains

Indian Express6 hours ago
The baked beans story of Shane Warne was just a myth. The legendary spinner had once narrated the real story of how the Australian cricket team received 1,900 cans of baked beans while they were on a tour of India in 1998 but after a request from their coach Geoff Marsh. Not Warne.
'Marsh rang Cricket Australia, Cricket Australia then rang the company and said, 'hey look the Australian boys need some baked beans and spaghetti to put on their toast in the mornings',' he said. 'We got three tonnes each … addressed 'Shane Warne, India'… so everyone thought I was desperate for baked beans, so it just stuck for the last 20 years.'
But the wizard of spin loved his baked beans, margherita pizza and bacon sandwiches. Even dining in some of the finest restaurants in the world, he would simply pop out and order pizza. His son Jackson reveals such an incident in a podcast. 'You know [Japanese restaurant] Nobu and Rockpool at Crown?''Jackson said on the Life of Brian Podcast.
'There have been multiple times where he would have an important meeting or catching up with people there for dinner. He would go to the restaurants – he knew he wasn't going to eat anything – he would be looking at the menu [and saying], 'I don't eat steak, these fish and oysters, no thanks, not for me'. So 40 minutes later, there would be a pizza from Gradi, just around the corner. He would be eating a pizza from a different restaurant in one of the restaurants there,' he narrated.
His great competitor friend Sachin Tendulkar too had a similar incident to recollect. 'I had invited Warnie over, said come to my place and we will have a nice meal. I checked if he is fine with Indian food and he said, 'Yeah, yeah! Don't worry'. I asked him if he is fine with spicy food and he said, avoid too much spicy stuff. I told the chef and he prepared accordingly,' said Tendulkar.
The night, though, ended up with Tendulkar ordering pizza for him. 'We ended up ordering a pizza for him. He didn't want to hurt my feelings and kind of handled that well despite the food. He was never comfortable with Indian food, which is what I discovered that evening,' he said.
Former teammate Brett Lee had also narrated a similar story of his . 'I remember going to that famous Japanese restaurant Nobu, and Warnie ordered a margherita pizza,' Lee said once said on the Willow Talk Cricket Podcast. 'Warnie only ever ate his baked beans, cheese on toast, he liked lasagna, spaghetti bolognese and margherita pizzas. We were going to one of the best restaurants in the world and Warnie, just being Warnie, decided to order margherita pizza. 'I don't think he ever ate one vegetable in his life.'
Another highly circulated story was that he hosted a bunch of Cricket Australia officials and journalists at a high-end eatery. Every time the enthusiastic waiter approached him to take the order, he would wave him off. 'No thanks mate,' he said. 'I'm right.'
Soon a pizza delivery person soon arrived and Warnie started nibbling into the cheese-heavy slices right there at the table. The waiter apologetically told him he can't eat them there. Warne smiled, took his pizza out of the restaurant, found a park bench and tucked into the meal and enjoyed a cigarette for dessert.

He said that many years ago, he was a labour union leader when 'Simon's' father, 'Xavier', attempted to frame and falsely accuse 100 coolies and execute them. To save the workers, 'Deva' had to assassinate 'Xavier' in front of the little 'Simon'. This encounter revealed why 'Simon' harboured such great resentment for 'Deva'. Nagarjuna in Coolie as Simon Aside from gold smuggling, 'Simon' ran a dark trade that involved him murdering workmen and selling their hearts abroad. Later, when 'Simon' travelled abroad, 'Dayalan' murdered 'Simon's' son and accused 'Deva'. 'Preethi', who was in captivity, was able to call 'Deva' using a coolie number taught by her father, causing 'Deva' to understand that 'Preethi' was his biological kid. He was Simon's boss and the leader of his enterprise. When he discovered about 'Deva', he wanted to team up with him. Mysuru on the block

Good Earth has continued to launch new block-print collections every year—each distinctive, beautiful, and rooted in craft traditions. The Building Blocks of Good Earth series focuses on a curated set of the brand's most iconic designs, prints that have shaped the vocabulary of Indian block printing and become part of its design legacy. These are now being revisited, reimagined, and documented in depth. The craft begins well before a block touches fabric. Every design is a thoughtful play of mathematics and poetry, each colour and motif a piece of a larger jigsaw puzzle, conceived to be carved into blocks and layered in print. Over the years, the brand has expanded the vocabulary beyond traditional Mughal-inspired motifs, creating a rich language of complex flora, fauna, and architectural forms that evolve while retaining their essence. Among its most beloved designs is Periyar, first introduced in 2004. This tropical aesthetic—unprecedented in Indian block printing—moved away from the traditional Sanganeri style and towards large-scale motifs of banana palms and riverine flora. Its enduring popularity lies in the balance of bold imagery, technical mastery, and timeless appeal. Alongside Periyar, designs like Nishaat, Fergana, and Mysore have become central to Good Earth's universe. The traveller's palm remains one of the most distinctive motifs, alongside Mysore's ceremonial elephants, Periyar's verdant palms, and Nishaat's whimsical cypresses—motifs that bring new forms, meanings, and cultural stories into block printing. The 2025 edition of Mysore introduces coffee berries, a more fluid traveller's palm, playful candy-cane stripes, and a refreshed palette anchored by madder rose and cool aquas. The layout offers motifs more breathing space, adding movement, modernity, and freshness to a design loved for over a decade. The Mysore bed collection is priced from ₹3,200 to ₹18,000. This season also marks the launch of Luminous Kashi, a festive collection celebrating Banaras' luminous cultural heritage through tableware, décor, textiles, and more.

On Independence Day, Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker plays national anthem on her violin: ‘Talent ki kami hai kya hamare choriyo main'

Two-time Olympic medallist shooter Manu Bhaker marked India's 79th Independence Day in a unique way, by playing the national anthem on her violin. The 23-year-old, who clinched bronze medals in the 10m air pistol (both individual and mixed team) events at the Paris Olympics, posted a video of her performance on social media. Sharing the clip, Manu wrote, 'An attempt to play the tune that is closest to my heart this Independence Day. Each time I represent India, I wish to stand on the podium and listen to this. Generally, we sit and play the violin, but this time subconsciously, we stood up while playing the National Anthem. It's the admiration for our nation that cannot be put into words. Jai Hind!' A post shared by Manu Bhaker (@bhakermanu) The heartfelt gesture struck a chord online, racking up over two lakh views and a flood of reactions. 'The goosebumps every Indian gets while listening to this,' a user commented. 'Talent ki kam hai kya hamare choriyo main (There is no shortage of talent in our girls),' said another. Others praised her versatility, with one admirer saying, 'Wow so talented Manu Bhakar madam. U are always an inspiration for me'. Another added, 'So proud of you! And so impressed! As if your shooting skills alone was not enough!' Manu Bhaker etched her name in Indian sporting history at the Paris Olympics, becoming the first-ever Indian woman shooter to clinch a medal at the Summer Games. She earned a bronze in the women's 10m air pistol, and then teamed up with Sarabjot Singh to claim another podium finish in the mixed team event, India's first Olympic medal in a shooting team category. In doing so, Bhaker also became the first Indian to win two medals at a single Olympics. She nearly pulled off a remarkable treble, narrowly missing out on a podium in the women's 25m pistol, where she finished fourth. Her success in Paris was no isolated feat. Bhaker has previously struck gold in the 25m pistol at the 2023 Shooting World Championships and secured silver in the same event in 2022. She's also a multiple-time champion at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. Now, all eyes will be on her once again as she gears up for the 16th Asian Championships in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, from August 16 to 30, where she will compete alongside 34 other Indian shooters.
