$1M permit approved for splash pad at Jacksonville's Riverfront Plaza
The city's goal of transforming the former site of the Jacksonville Landing into a destination park is getting closer to reality with more construction permits now approved.
This week, a permit was issued for the construction of a splash pad estimated to cost $1,160,000.
Phase one of the Riverfront Plaza project is currently underway. According to the city's website, phase one will see the completion of a park pavilion building, which will include a small cafe space, restrooms, as well as an elevated playground on top.
Outside of the pavilion building, there will be a large lawn for events, as well as a new bulkhead, riverwalk, and plaza space connecting the park to the Jacksonville Center for the Performing Arts.

Phase one is expected to wrap up construction late this year.
Phase two will add a beer garden, rain garden, and a bike and pedestrian pathway to the Main Street Bridge.
The project is being headed by the Haskell Company.
The splash pad will be constructed by SAI Fountains, based out of Ponte Vedra.

Clay County Schools faces $10M budget hole ahead of new school year
Clay County Schools Superintendent David Broskie says the district is facing a $10 million budget shortfall heading into the 2025-2026 school year. 'Right now, the county's costs are more than the money that we make,' the superintendent shared. In a May workshop meeting, the county leader named inflation, uncertainty with the state budget, and decreased enrollment as some reasons the county is facing a loss. The superintendent's budget presentation showed 500 fewer students enrolled in the county, resulting in millions of dollars in losses. 'So if you look at it... The difference of about 500 students... you're looking at about 4 million dollars just there,' Broskie said. The report also detailed the millions of dollars in local and state funds going towards Family Empowerment Scholarships (FES), or private school vouchers. Related: Mayor Deegan signs resolution calling on Florida to continue funding advanced courses It's something the superintendent named as another contributor to the county's budget deficit. In fiscal year 2024- 2025, over $24.3 million in aid went towards the vouchers. That's a jump from the $16.8 million that local and state governments paid out in FY 2023-2024. By the next fiscal year, the superintendent said that early estimates show that number will increase to $30 million. To better manage the county's budget, district leaders are reviewing all district and school allocations. Georgia's insurance commissioner looks to crack down on insurance company mistakes
Georgia's insurance commissioner recovered more than $100 million since 2019 from insurance companies for consumers. But many Georgians don't even know they can file a complaint. When a tree fell on Jorge Diez's Buckhead home in February, his insurance company refused to pay for temporary housing for his family, including his 2-year-old daughter, who was recovering from ear surgery. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<<, He said, "I mean, we can't cook. There's a hole in the roof. The flooring has been taken up." Next, Diez did what any Georgian can. He filed a complaint with the State Insurance Commissioner. Insurance Commissioner John King said his office has recovered more than $100 million for consumers from insurance companies since 2019. "File a complaint. We will investigate it," he said. His office gets about 10,000 complaints each year. King said, "There's some companies that sometimes have a gap in judgment, and that's our job, is to hold them accountable. We want them to honor the terms of the contract that they had with their customer. Nothing more, nothing less." After Diez filed his complaint with the state, his insurance company reversed its decision. "Really. It was like magic," Diez said. 'I mean, it was like clockwork. What the insurance company should have been doing from the very beginning, they finally decided to do after they got a phone call.' Commissioner King is now asking the legislature to grant him more power to fine insurance companies who refuse to fix mistakes. Right now, by law, his office can only fine those insurance companies a maximum of $5,000 per offense. '$5,000 per incident, I think, is woefully inadequate,' he said.
