France arrests five over cryptocurrency kidnapping
In recent months, France has seen several kidnappings and attempted abductions targeting cryptocurrency businesspeople and their families, and authorities have been under intense pressure to act.
On Dec 31, 2024, five armed individuals attacked a man and a woman in their home in the eastern town of Saint-Genis-Pouilly near the Swiss border.
In exchange for their release, the attackers demanded a ransom from their son, an influencer living in Dubai, prosecutors said at the time.
When they did not receive the ransom, they abducted the father, who was found a few hours later in the boot of a car in the department of Sarthe, nearly 700 kilometres (435 miles) away.
The 56-year-old man had been "assaulted, doused with petrol and transported in the boot of a car", prosecutor Karine Malara said in a statement.
His wife was found tied up at her home in Saint-Genis-Pouilly.
Five individuals were arrested on Tuesday as part of a criminal investigation.
They were taken into custody on Friday on charges including kidnapping, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, Malara said.
The suspects are four adults aged 18 to 22 and a 17-year-old minor.
Prosecutors have not released the name of the cryptocurrency entrepreneur, stating only that his "success was well known to the general public".
Three of the adults in pre-trial detention have extensive criminal records, including for violence, theft, drug and currency trafficking, and possession of weapons.
The minor has a record for aggravated theft.
In May, 25 people — including six minors — were charged in connection with several kidnappings and attempted abductions of cryptocurrency entrepreneurs and their family members.
The most high-profile incident under investigation is that of a kidnapping attempt targeting the daughter and grandson of Pierre Noizat, the chief executive officer of crypto firm Paymium.
The abduction attempt was carried out in broad daylight in Paris in May.
In June, five men were arrested in northern France, suspected of planning the kidnapping of a young man and his mother.
They allegedly intended to cut off one of the woman's fingers to obtain a ransom from the son, who owned cryptocurrencies.
Malara said that no link had so far been established between this week's arrests and the other kidnapping cases.

US forces conduct raid in northern Syria against IS target, sources say
ATMEH, Syria (Reuters) -U.S. forces took part in a pre-dawn raid in northwestern Syria early on Wednesday that targeted a member of the Islamic State group, a U.S. official and a Syrian security source said. A second Syrian security source and Syria's state-owned Al-Ikhbariya said the target was killed as he tried to escape. It was the second known raid in northern Syria by U.S. troops since former President Bashar al-Assad was ousted in December. The Islamist-led government that replaced him has pledged to prevent a resurgence of Islamic State and is part of an anti-IS alliance that includes the U.S.-led coalition fighting the group. It was not immediately clear who the Islamic State member targeted on Wednesday was. The U.S. official said he was a suspected high-value target. The first Syrian source said he was an Iraqi national and was married to a French national. It was not immediately clear what happened to his wife. The Pentagon did not immediately have any public comment on the reports. The operation began at around 2 a.m. (1100 GMT), according to the Syrian security sources and neighbours in the town of Atmeh, in Idlib province. Helicopters and drones provided air cover, one Syrian security source and residents said. France probes death of man on live video stream after violence and humiliations
PARIS (Reuters) -French authorities are investigating the death of a man during a live video stream on the Kick live streaming platform, where he had regularly been shown enduring violence and humiliations. Prosecutors ordered an autopsy and opened an investigation into the death of the 46-year-old man in the village of Contes, north of Nice, on Monday. Clara Chappaz, junior minister for AI and digital technology, said Raphael Graven, known online as Jean Pormanove, had regularly featured in videos on Kick, where he was physically assaulted or humiliated by co-streamers as viewers watched live. "The death of Jean Pormanove and the violence he suffered are absolutely horrific," she said on X. Kick Francais said on X it would cooperate with authorities and was undertaking a review of its French content. "Our priority is to protect creators and ensure a safer environment on Kick," it said, adding that "all co-streamers who participated in this live broadcast have been banned pending the ongoing investigation". Kick is an Australia-registered live streaming platform that shares revenue with its content creators. Chappaz said a judicial investigation is underway, that she had referred the matter to digital and audiovisual communication regulator Arcom and that she had filed a report to Pharos, France's internet portal for reporting illicit internet content. She said she asked Kick for explanations, adding: "the responsibility of online platforms for dissemination of illegal content is not optional: it is the law". Yassin Sadouni, a lawyer for one of two co-streamers seen abusing Pormanove, said on BFM television that Pormanove had cardiovascular problems and that the violence in the videos was not real but acted. "All those scenes are just staged, they follow a script," he said. French media have shown excerpts of hours-long videos during which Pormanove is seen suffering blows, insults, strangulation, dousing with paint and oil and being shot at with a paintball gun.
