Water release to Jeedipalli via Handri–Neeva main canal on July 15
Vijayawada: The state government led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has made significant strides in ensuring irrigation water for Rayalaseema, with Rs 3,890 crore allocated for the Handri–Neeva Sujala Sravanthi project. During a review on Saturday at camp office, the Chief Minister evaluated major irrigation projects, including Handri–Neeva, Polavaram Left Canal, and north Andhra initiatives, alongside reservoir levels and water management strategies. Starting July 15, 3,850 cusecs of water will be released into the Jeedipalli reservoir under Phase-1 of the Handri–Neeva project, with preparations underway to ensure timely execution. This water will fill the Gollapalli, Marala and Cherlopalli reservoirs and be channeled to the Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir over 15 days. By July 31, water will flow through the Phase-2 canal to the Punganur and Kuppam branch canals, irrigating new areas in Rayalaseema following canal extension and lining works. Naidu emphasized using the full 3,850 cusecs to fill all reservoirs and tanks in the region. The Chief Minister stressed efficient water use, directing departments to implement a coordinated plan focusing on groundwater recharge, involving both the irrigation and panchayat raj departments. Officials reported that reservoirs currently hold 419 tmc ft of water, a 236 tmc ft increase from last year's 182 tmc ft, with normal rainfall in most districts except Kadapa and optimistic forecasts ahead. The Chief Minister prioritised utilising inflows through the Handri–Neeva and Pothireddypadu systems to fill Rayalaseema reservoirs, particularly in the Penna basin, ensuring irrigation for ayacut farmers before storage. He ordered immediate work on the Galeru–Nagari canal to supply water to Kadapa and tenders for Phase-2 of Handri–Neeva to reach southern Chittoor. The Veligonda Project in Prakasam district is targeted for completion by June 2026, with adequate funding assured. Polavaram Left Canal works must be completed by July 31, with all seven packages to Anakapalli finalided. Naidu also pushed for expediting north Andhra projects, including completing the Tarakarama Teertha Project within a year and finalising Thotapalli distributary works and the Vamsadhara–Nagavali linkage project. He called for accurate water auditing, to be conducted by Vassar Labs, accounting for rainfall, river inflows, groundwater, and usage for agriculture, drinking, and industry to ensure efficient resource planning.

State govt prioritising north Andhra projects: Nimmala
Vijayawada: The state government is making concerted efforts to expedite pending irrigation projects in the North Andhra region, aiming at resolving long-standing drinking and irrigation water issues. This commitment was articulated by Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu following a review meeting held today at the camp office here. Minister Ramanaidu stated that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has specifically directed officials to prioritise these projects to ensure water security for the people of North Andhra. He announced that the Chief Minister himself would conduct a special review meeting on North Andhra projects next week to finalize their prioritization and development strategy. Ramanaidu highlighted that during the 2014-2019 TDP government's tenure numerous projects were sanctioned and largely completed for the benefit of North Andhra. However, he lamented that the subsequent YSRCP government, which came to power in 2019, neglected these crucial works. 'It's unfortunate that the previous government abandoned works like the Vamsadhara Stage-2, Phase-2, and Thotapalli Barrage, even though 90 percent of their construction was complete,' Ramanaidu asserted, accusing the YSRCP of significant betrayal to the North Andhra region over the past five years. He affirmed that the current coalition government, since assuming office last year, has been actively working to bring all these pending projects back on track. He expressed confidence that their completion would comprehensively address the drinking and irrigation water challenges faced by the region. During the review meeting, Ramanaidu specifically assessed the progress of balance works for the Vamsadhara-Nagavali and Nagavali-Champavathi interlinking projects, enquiring about their current status from officials. He alsosought updates on accelerating works for the Hiramandalam Lift, Madduvalasa Stage-2, and Janjavathi reservoir. Furthermore, Ramanaidu delved into the impediments causing delays and halts in projects funded by JICA, including the Andra Reservoir, Raivada, Peddankalam, Peddagadda, and Vattigedda. The minister instructed officials and engineers concerned to prepare comprehensive reports ahead of the Chief Minister's review. These reports should detail the prioritisation of each project, estimated completion timelines, and other pertinent information. The review was attended by irrigation advisor Venkateswara Rao, ENC Narasimhamurthy, chief engineers, superintending engineers of various projects, and other senior officials.

A.P. government focused to complete several pending irrigation projects, says Minister
The government of Andhra Pradesh is all set to intensify efforts to complete several pending irrigation projects in the region in a bid to resolve the long-standing drinking and irrigation water issues in North Andhra, said Minister for Water Resources Nimmala Ramanaidu. The Minister on Thursday chaired a detailed review meeting focusing on the status and challenges of key North Andhra irrigation projects. Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Minister said that the officials have been directed to give top priority to delivering safe drinking water and irrigation resources to the people of North Andhra. In line with this directive, a high-level review meeting will be held by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu next week to assess the progress and set clear targets. 'During the 2014–19 TDP regime, numerous irrigation projects were sanctioned and many reached near-completion for the benefit of North Andhra. Unfortunately, after 2019, the YSRCP government neglected all these works,' the Minister said. Now, within just a year of coming to power, the coalition government is putting every effort into bringing these stalled projects back on track, he added. Mr. Ramanaidu pointed out that 90% of works on the Vamsadhara Stage-II Phase-II and Thotapalli Barrage had already been completed during the TDP regime but were abandoned by the previous administration. 'This negligence is not just inefficiency; it is a betrayal of the people of North Andhra,' he added. The Minister also reviewed the remaining works on the Vamsadhara–Nagavali and Nagavali–Champavati linkage projects, and enquired about the current status from the officials. He sought updates on the pace of ongoing works at the Hiramandalam Lift, Madduvalasa Stage-II, and the Janjavathi Reservoir. In particular, attention was drawn to several stalled projects funded under JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), including the Andhra Reservoir, Raivada, Peddankalam, Peddagedda, and Vattigedda projects. These projects, which were progressing slowly or had come to a complete halt, are now being reassessed for bottlenecks and strategies for completion. Mr. Ramanaidu directed engineers and department officials to prepare comprehensive status reports detailing project priorities, timelines, and required support ahead of the Chief Minister's upcoming review. The reports are expected to outline the estimate time required for each project to be completed and the level of funding and resources necessary. Irrigation Advisor Venkateswara Rao, ENC Narasimhamaurthy, Chief Engineers and Superintending Engineers of various projects, and other senior officials were present.
