Scottie Scheffler Appears To Have Called Out European Golf Fans
Scottie Scheffler continued his incredible hot streak over the weekend after overcoming a four-stroke deficit in Sunday's BMW Championship to secure his 18th PGA Tour win.
Like with most things over the past few years, Scheffler made it look easy as he punctuated his walk down of Scotland's Robert MacIntyre with an outstanding chip-in on No. 17 to put the dagger is his opponent's hopes.
This past weekend marked the fourth time in his career that Scheffler had come back from four strokes or more through 54 holes. And it also gave him his fifth victory on the PGA calendar — making him the first golfer since Tiger Woods to post back-to-back seasons of 5+ wins.
At one point during the tournament, MacIntyre turned and shushed a fan after draining a putt on No. 14 to save par — something Scottie was given a front row seat to — and it led to Scheffler recalling his own experience with a fan across the pond at this year's Open Championship.
Golf fans in the U.S. tend to be viewed as more rowdy than the typical overseas spectator — especially with events like the WM Phoenix Open.
But the four-time major champion says he's received his fair share of heckling from fans all across the globe.
Scheffler calls out 'silly' European fan
"I didn't see any of that. I played with Bob when we were in Scotland. I heard some fairly choice words when I was leading the tournament in Ireland," Scheffler told reporters Saturday.
"I think it's part of it. People have a tendency to say things that are dumb. I can think of a few things that were said to me in the final round in Ireland that were very far over the line," he added.
"If you're a fan, it's only going to fire the guy up more, and I think just do your best to behave out there. It can be a little bit silly sometimes."
Whatever the fan said certainly didn't appear to affect Scottie too much, as he coasted to a 17-under win to capture yet another major for his growing trophy case.

NRL world divided after Trent Barrett and Gorden Tallis cop staggering 'ban'
NRL fans have had a mixed reaction amid revelations Kevin Walters is set to be blocked from taking Gorden Tallis and Trent Barrett to England for the Ashes tour. The revealed on Thursday that the NRL is set to reject an application from Walters to have Tallis on his Kangaroos staff when they travel to England for the three-Test tour in October. Walters is reportedly keen to have former Broncos teammate Tallis on the tour to act as a 'cultural figurehead' and impart on the players the importance of wearing the green and gold. Tallis played in Ashes series during his career, but none of the current players have had the honour because it hasn't been a thing for the last 20 years. Michael Chammas reported: "The proposed role was to focus on the culture and history of the Kangaroos, aimed at galvanising the team in the three-Test series." But the NRL has reportedly rejected the move because the governing body "didn't believe the role was necessary" and "believe Walters has the credentials to educate the players" himself. The same report also claims that Walters wanted to have Broncos assistant coaches Barrett and Ben Te'o on his Kangaroos staff, but the NRL has effectively banned them as well. The NRL reportedly doesn't want any coaches tied to NRL clubs working as Walters' assistants, opening the door for Super League coaches to get involved. It means Willie Peters (Hull KR coach), Adrian Lam (Leigh Leopards), Brad Arthur (Leeds Rhinos) and John Cartwright (Hull FC) are all in the frame to be on Walters' staff. Justin Holbrook was an assistant coach for the Kangaroos under Mal Meninga last year, but is also set to miss out because he works at the Roosters under Trent Robinson. Walters appointed Barrett and Te'o to their roles at the Broncos before he was sacked at the end of last year. New coach Michael Maguire retained them as his assistants, and they've helped lead the Broncos to a likely finals berth. Wayne Bennett blasts 'ridiculous' NRL stance The NRL's stance comes after they also blocked Wayne Bennett from becoming the Kangaroos coach. Bennett blasted the call as 'ridiculous' after the NRL and ARL Commission ruled him out because he's the Rabbitohs' head coach. 'They must think the Australian players can just coach themselves and us NRL coaches are just taking up money and space," Bennett said. 'We want the best players playing for Australia and we want the best players playing Origin - yet we don't want the best coaches in charge of the national team. 'This is not a shot at Kevin (Walters), he's been an NRL coach and he will do a great job, he's qualified, but what's the longer-term plan beyond Kevin? There's 17 clubs now (in the NRL) and there's going to be 18 and 19 soon (with Perth in 2027 and PNG in 2028). 'This policy rules out dozens of coaches. You've got the best coaches in the NRL and if they want to do it (coach the Kangaroos), then they should have the opportunity to do it. It's a silly rule, it's going to come back and hurt them at some point down the track, I can assure you of that.' There was a chain of thought that Smith could work as an assistant to Walters after missing out on the head-coaching role. 'I don't think Cameron will be involved,' Walters told . 'It's just not the right time for him to be involved. We'll let him do what he needs to do with his commentary and family and we'll get on with the tour. 'It's been a bit of a slow process (finalising support staff), but that's okay. I've spoken to (Justin Holbrook and Trent Barrett) but we're still contemplating what the makeup of the staff will be.' On social media, fans were heavily divided over the news that Tallis, Barrett and Te'o have been barred. While some felt Tallis would have been a great addition, others agreed his role would be unnecessary.

Henley leads PGA Tour Championship with Scheffler in pursuit
Russell Henley rode a hot putter to a nine-under par 61 and a two-shot lead over top-ranked Scottie Scheffler on Thursday at the US PGA Tour Championship, where a star-studded field is chasing a $10 million top prize. Henley, the world number four who captured his fifth PGA title at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, broke free atop a crowded leaderboard with three birdies to close his round at East Lake in Atlanta, Georgia. The American had made a strong start with two birdies and an eagle on the front nine, adding back-to-back birdies at 12 and 13 before he drained a 42-foot birdie at 16 to launch his closing burst. He added a 34-foot birdie at 17 and got up and down from a greenside bunker for birdie at the par-five 18th. His 207 total feet of putts made included three from beyond 30 feet. "I putted as good as I can putt," Henley said. "I felt like I was clear on my reads. Last week I felt like I played really well and didn't give myself a bunch of looks because I couldn't figure out how far the ball was going and struggled a little bit on the looks of those greens. "(Today) just felt a little more clear in my mind on what I thought the ball was going to do ... just kind of free-wheeled it a little bit." He walked off the 18th green with a three-shot lead but Scheffler -- who has won five times in his last 10 starts and nabbed major titles at the PGA Championship and British Open this year -- closed with back-to-back birdies in a bogey-free seven-under par 63. He was a stroke in front of five players sharing third on six-under 64. "I hit some fairways and I holed some nice putts as well," said Scheffler, who got his round going with birdies at the second and third and added another at the sixth. Unhappy with his approach at the 10th he nevertheless rolled in a 27-foot birdie putt, and after a birdie at 15 managed to get up and down for par from the dangerous right rough below the elevated green at 16. "I knew going down there right of 16 was a huge penalty," Scheffler said. "We had talked about it in the practice rounds, and our job was just to get the ball back on the green, which I did, and it was nice to hole that long putt." He drilled another 27-foot birdie at 17, then blasted out of a greenside bunker to four feet at 18 and made that putt for solo second moments before approaching thunderstorms would have halted play. - Unlikely McIlroy birdie - Two-time major winners Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa were in the tie for third on 64 alongside fellow American Patrick Cantlay, Scotland's Robert MacIntyre and England's Tommy Fleetwood. Thomas was in the lead at seven-under through 15 holes, but made a double bogey at 16, where his chip from the right greenside rough failed to reach the green. Scheffler, the defending FedEx Cup champion, topped the standings heading into the three playoff events and further solidified that spot with a victory at the penultimate event, the BMW Championship, last week. Last year Scheffler's position atop the points list meant he started the Tour Championship at 10-under and with a two-stroke advantage over the number two on the list. This year, all 30 players who made the finale started even with the winner to collect $10 million.
