Two arrested in Springs for speeding on Paul Kruger Road
Two motorists were arrested by the EMPD in Springs on May 15 for exceeding the speed limit.
Members of the EMPD Specialised Services set up high-speed monitoring equipment to check for compliance with the designated speed limit of 80km/h on Paul Kruger Road.
Between 06:00 and 07:00, officers stopped the drivers of a grey Volvo and a grey BMW, both of which failed to comply with the designated speed limit along this road.
The 36-year-old man and 50-year-old woman failed to give satisfactory reasons for being in contravention of the National Road Traffic Act 93/1996 and, with video footage as evidence, were immediately handcuffed and placed under arrest for exceeding the speed limit.
The pair was escorted to the Springs Police Station to be detained and are expected to appear in the Springs Magistrate's Court.
The EMPD appeals to motorists to practice caution and to adhere to speed limits on roadways as speeding is one of the major contributing factors of road fatalities throughout the City of Ekurhuleni.

SIU investigates Department of Defence over mask tender corruption claims

President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed a new proclamation authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of maladministration in the affairs of the Department of Defence and to recover any losses suffered by the State. Proclamation 260 of 2025 authorises the SIU to investigate serious maladministration, focusing on irregularities linked to Bid Number CPSC-UB-M-013-2021 for the supply and delivery of surgical mask elastic loops. 'The SIU probe will examine whether the procurement and contracting were made in a manner that was not fair, competitive, transparent, equitable, or cost-effective or in violation of applicable legislation, guidelines, or instructions from the National or Provincial Treasury. 'This includes the department's or the State's unauthorised, irregular, or wasteful expenditure. Furthermore, the SIU will seek to establish if there was any misappropriation of unidentified payments received by the department,' said the SIU in a statement today. The probe will also look at any irregular, unlawful, or improper conduct by officials or employees of the department, its suppliers or service providers, or any other person or entity implicated. The SIU said the proclamation covers allegations of unlawful and improper conduct that occurred between March 1, 2021 and May 23, 2025, as well as any related activities before March 1, 2021 and after the date of the proclamation that are pertinent to the matters under investigation or involve the same persons, entities or contracts. Beyond investigating maladministration, corruption and fraud, the SIU is committed to identifying systemic failures and recommending measures to prevent future losses. In line with the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Act 74 of 1996 (SIU Act), the SIU will refer any evidence of criminal conduct uncovered during its investigation to the NPA for further action. Under the SIU Act, the SIU is also authorised to initiate a civil action in the High Court or a Special Tribunal in its name to address any wrongdoing identified during its investigation resulting from acts of corruption, fraud or maladministration. – Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Car hijacking and kidnapping near Carletonville raises safety concerns

A disturbing incident involving car hijacking and kidnapping has raised alarms in the East Driefontein area, despite recent national crime statistics showing a significant drop in hijackings. Hijacking on P111 Road near East Driefontein On Tuesday, May 20 at approximately 09:40, a man driving an Isuzu KB bakkie was hijacked at gunpoint along the P111 road near 8 Shaft, Carletonville. The victim was intercepted by suspects in a grey Mitsubishi and a blue Volvo. According to reports, the hijackers forced the driver to stop and ordered him at gunpoint to climb into the back of his own vehicle. The suspects then blindfolded the man and drove off. Victim kidnapped and dumped near Lawley After a period of driving, the suspects transferred the victim to another vehicle and eventually abandoned him between Lawley and Ennerdale. Fortunately, the victim survived the ordeal and managed to report the incident. The South African Police Service (SAPS) is currently investigating both hijacking and kidnapping charges in connection with the incident. No arrests have been made yet. Crime statistics show national decrease in hijackings This incident comes shortly after Police Minister Senzo Mchunu released South Africa's first quarter 2025 crime statistics on May 23, which revealed a 15.1% decrease in car hijackings compared to the same period last year. While the national trend is encouraging, the Carletonville hijacking highlights the continued threat of violent vehicle crimes in specific areas. Community urged to remain vigilant The SAPS urges anyone with information related to the East Driefontein hijacking to come forward. Residents are reminded to stay alert and report any suspicious activity, especially in remote or less-patrolled areas.
