PAGASA: LPA likely to become tropical depression within 24 hours

GMA Networka day ago

State weather bureau PAGASA on Thursday said that the low pressure area (LPA) being monitored over Northern Luzon now has a "high" chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.
According to a Balitanghali report, as of 10:00 a.m., the LPA was spotted over the waters near Itbayat, Batanes.
Should it intensify, the weather system will be named Tropical Depression Auring, the first tropical cyclone to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this rainy season.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Wutip, which remains outside PAR, continues to move toward Southern China. It was last seen 1,085 kilometers west of Northern Luzon, packing maximum sustained winds of up to 65 kilometers per hour.
Despite the presence of Wutip and the LPA, PAGASA emphasized that it is the southwest monsoon or habagat that is currently causing widespread rains across the country.
The agency warns that heavy to intense rainfall may lead to flash floods and landslides, particularly in Luzon and Mindanao — areas already experiencing rain showers due to the monsoon flow.
Metro Manila and parts of the Visayas are also likely to experience scattered rains and thunderstorms in the coming hours.
This weather disturbance comes as the country marks Independence Day, with celebrations across the archipelago potentially affected by wet weather conditions.
PAGASA continues to monitor developments closely and advises the public to stay updated through official channels for potential storm bulletins and advisories. —Sherylin Untalan/ VAL, GMA Integrated News

Habagat, LPA's trough, easterlies to bring scattered rains over PH

Batanes will have cloudy skies with scattered rains due to the trough of the Low Pressure Area (LPA) as the southwest monsoon or Habagat and easterlies bring scattered rains over the western section of Northern Luzon and the rest of the country on Friday, PAGASA reported. As of 2 a.m., the weather bureau reported that Tropical Depression Auring has weakened into an LPA and is now outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). It has an "unlikely" chance of redeveloping into a Tropical Cyclone within the next 24 hours. Batanes will have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the trough of the LPA as flash floods or landslides may occur due to moderate to at times heavy rains. Ilocos Region and Babuyan Islands will have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the southwest monsoon with the possibility that flash floods or landslides will occur due to moderate to at times heavy rains. Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental will have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the easterlies with flash floods or landslides occurring due to moderate to at times heavy rains. Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the easterlies with flash floods or landslides possibly occurring during severe thunderstorms. The wind speed forecast for northern and western sections of Northern Luzon is moderate to strong moving in the southwest to south direction as coastal waters will be moderate to rough. The rest of Luzon will experience light to moderate wind speed moving in the southeast to south direction with slight to moderate coastal waters. Visayas and Mindanao will have light to moderate wind speed moving in the east to southeast direction with slight to moderate coastal waters. Sunrise will be at 5:27 a.m., sunset at 6:26 p.m. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

LPA inside PAR becomes 'Auring', 1st tropical depression of 2025

The low pressure area observed inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday evening developed into a tropical depression named 'Auring,' the first storm that formed in the country in 2025. In a social media post, PAGASA said the LPA became a tropical depression at 8 p.m. 'Tropical Cyclone Bulletins will be issued beginning at 11:00 p.m. today,' the state weather bureau said. The LPA was last located 200 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes at 3 p.m. Based on PAGASA's 4 p.m. daily weather forecast, it is expected to affect weather conditions in Batanes and Cagayan. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News

Habagat to bring more rain in parts of Luzon

The Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and low pressure area (LPA) will continue to bring rains over parts of Luzon in the next 24 hours, PAGASA said Thursday afternoon. Pangasinan, Zambales, and Occidental Mindoro will experience occasional rains due to the Habagat, according to the state weather bureau. Meanwhile, the LPA monitored inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Batanes and Cagayan. These moderate to heavy rains may trigger flash floods or landslides. PAGASA earlier said the LPA has a "high" chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours. At 3 p.m., it was located 200 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes. The same weather conditions will be observed over Western Visayas and the rest of Luzon due to the Habagat. Possible flash floods or landslides may persist in affected areas due to moderate to at times heavy rains. The rest of the country will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorms. These severe thunderstorms may cause flash floods or landslides. State meteorologists also said winds will be moderate to strong, while coastal waters will be moderate to rough in the northern and western sections of Luzon. Meanwhile, the rest of the country will experience light to moderate wind conditions and slight to moderate coastal water conditions. Sunrise in Metro Manila will be at 5:27 a.m. on Friday. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
