After Himanta's letter, Dhami orders probe into death of Assamese woman in Rishikesh
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday directed the state DGP to conduct a thorough investigation into the death of an Assamese woman, Rosmita Hojai, in Uttarakhand after his Assam counterpart, Himanta Biswa Sarma, wrote to him.
The Uttarakhand police had held that the death appeared to be a case of suicide. Hojai (25) from Assam's Dima Hasao district had been found dead on the banks of the Ganga river in Rishikesh on Tuesday, five days after she was reported missing on June 6.
According to her family, she had travelled to Delhi to appear for a Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examination, after which she travelled to Rishikesh with two individuals.
Sub-inspector Yogesh Pandey, SHO of Muni ki Raiti police station where the body was found, said the post-mortem report stated the cause of death to be due to drowning and no external injuries were found.
'The woman was preparing for a competitive exam and had performed poorly. Her two friends who accompanied her to Rishikesh said she was distressed. We checked this with her family, and it seemed true. Prima facie, it's a case of suicide. However, if we are asked to re-investigate, we will conduct a probe again,' Pandey said.
On Tuesday, Sarma wrote to Dhami requesting the case be examined further, expressing concerns about possible foul play.
'In view of the gravity of the matter and the deep anguish being experienced by her family, I request your kind intervention to ensure that the matter is investigated in a comprehensive and time-bound manner, examining all possible angles. If any criminal involvement is found, I urge that the responsible individuals be identified, apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law, so that justice is delivered,' he wrote.

He also asserted that use of mobile phones on the chariots will be strictly prohibited. Speaking to reporters, Harichandan said, 'No non-servitor will be allowed to climb the chariots. If any such person is found on the chariot, strong action, including arrest, will be taken. Also, servitors will not be allowed to carry mobile phones onto the chariots.' To ensure the timely completion of rituals and maintain discipline during the 'Pahandi Bije' (the ceremonial procession) of the deities, the government has requested a list of servitors designated to perform rituals on Rath Yatra day (June 27). 'The final list will be enforced strictly,' the Minister said. Meanwhile, DGP Yogesh Bahadur Khurania held a meeting here to review the security measures for the Rath Yatra. The road connecting Uttara Square near Bhubaneswar to Puri will be under CCTV surveillance, and efforts are underway to instal CCTV cameras along the Puri-Konark road as well, the DGP said. For the first time, an integrated command and control centre will be set up at the Puri Town Police Station to monitor crowd movement and traffic. 'AI-enabled CCTV cameras are being installed at key locations in Puri for real-time monitoring,' he said. Traffic advisories will be issued from the control room to guide pilgrims and visitors, he added. Besides, a mobile app has been developed through which people will get information about the route through which they will have the convenience to visit Puri during the festival and park their vehicles, he informed. Along with police personnel, rapid action force, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and specialised agencies will be deployed in Puri for the festival, he said, adding, 'We have requested the authorities concerned for deployment of Central forces.' A 28-year-old Assamese woman was found dead in the forest behind Dhanas Lake under suspicious circumstances on Sunday afternoon. The woman's body was found by a group of local women, who had gone to offer prayers at a nearby temple. They alerted the police around 2.30 pm. While there were no visible external injury marks on the body, police sources said blood was oozing from her mouth, prompting suspicion of foul play. The body was taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examination. The deceased was later identified as Beena Kumari, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony in Sector 26.
