Raptors rookie Collin Murray-Boyles impresses despite rust in debut
Game 2 of the Las Vegas Summer League was all about Collin Murray-Boyle's debut for the Toronto Raptors.

The ninth pick of last month's NBA draft had been hobbled a bit by an injury since late in the pre-draft process (his first workout, a healthy one, thoroughly impressed the Raptors months ago), so was understandably a bit rusty in his first game action in ages Sunday.

There was an instant turnover on his first touch of the ball followed by an early air-balled three-pointer, another later, and some foul issues, but Murray-Boyles also quickly showed why he was so well-regarded as a defender.

ESPN had tabbed Murray-Boyles as the best off-ball defender in his draft class and Sunday's game was filled with evidence that backed up the assertion.
Toronto again played an aggressive, nearly pressing brand of defence on the Orlando guards (the formula that had led to a humiliation of the Chicago Bulls in Toronto's opener Friday). It felt like the Raptors were insulted when an opponent successfully got the ball over half court and other Raptors were there to swarm the opponent if they did beat the first defender. But the downside of an approach like that is if it doesn't work, it can lead to a lot of open shots. That's where Murray-Boyles, in particular, came in.

The South Carolina standout simply plays with defensive instincts the vast majority of rookies can't match. He always seemed to be in the right place to help defensively Sunday and his quick and strong hands generated turnover after turnover. Plus there was an eye-opening sequence late in the third quarter when Murray-Boyles blocked a layup attempt and ended up throwing down a two-handed putback dunk at the other end.

Bo Bichette homered twice and drove in six runs, Ernie Clement had a career-best five of Toronto's season-high 25 hits and the Blue Jays beat the hometown Colorado Rockies 15-1 on Monday night. Lukes singled to drive in Clement, Bichette hit a three-run shot and Varsho added an RBI single in the seventh to make it 14-1. Key moment Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Addison Barger led off the third with back-to-back singles before Varsho hit a three-run homer. Clement tripled and scored when Loperfido singled before Schneider hit a run-scoring double, Lukes walked and Bichette added a two-run home run that capped Toronto's seven-run inning and made it 9-0. The Blue Jays also set season highs for at-bats (50), total bases (39), runs scored (15) and RBIs (15).

Fresh off rout, Blue Jays vie for series win vs. Rockies

That said, the Blue Jays made themselves at home in Denver on Monday night with a 15-1 romp over the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a three-game series. Toronto will have a chance to clinch the series on Tuesday night when it sends Jose Berrios (7-4, 3.84 ERA) to the mound against Colorado's Anthony Molina (0-0, 7.27) in a battle of right-handers. Molina allowed one run on three hits in an inning in relief last season in his lone career appearance against the Blue Jays. Berrios has faced the Rockies twice in his career, winning both starts over 14 2/3 shutout innings. Tuesday will be his first time pitching in Colorado, and he can build off Eric Lauer's start in Monday's victory. Lauer was 0-6 with a 12.73 ERA in seven starts in Denver before allowing just one run over six innings on Monday night. Beating the Rockies in the opener was a positive sign for the Blue Jays, who had lost four of their last five games on the road and are 28-29 away from home. (They are 38-19 at home.) Monday's victory also gave the Blue Jays just their third win in the last nine games overall and comes after they dropped two of three games against Kansas City. 'That's what you want, especially in a team in our situation. You want guys to force their hand and earn a spot. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski) TORONTO — Toronto FC is close to acquiring attacking midfielder Djordje Mihailovic from the Colorado Rapids in a cash deal, according to a source. The transfer is not yet finalized, according to the source granted anonymity because they are not authorized to comment on the negotiations. TFC, without a designated player since buying out the contracts of Italians Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi in early July, has been looking for some star power. And Toronto, which sits 12th in the Eastern Conference at 5-13-6, needs help in attack. With 25 goals in 24 games, it ranks 26th in the league on offence. Canadian international Theo Corbeanu leads the team with five goals while Honduran Deybi Flores, a defensive-minded midfielder, tops the team with two assists. The 26-year-old Mihailovic has nine goals and seven assists in 24 regular-season outings for Colorado this season. He is making $1.775 million (all figures in U.S. dollars) with the Rapids this season, a bargain compared to the $15.4 million Toronto was paying Insigne and the $6.295 million Bernardeschi was earning. Toronto marks the fifth career team for Mihailovic and his second in Canada. He spent the 2021 and '22 seasons with CF Montreal, playing 61 regular-season games, including 57 starts. In 2021, he recorded 16 assists, erasing the previous club record of 13 set by Ignacio Piatti in 2018. Montreal had acquired Mihailovic from the Chicago Fire in exchange for $800,000 in general allocation money. Signed as a homegrown player from the Fire academy in January 2017, he played 73 regular-season games for the Fire, including 45 starts, with seven goals and 15 assists. After the 2022 MLS season, Mihailovic joined AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. He had two goals and two assists in 36 appearances across all competitions for the Dutch side before leaving to join Colorado in January 2024, signing on as a designated player on a four-year contract through 2027 with a club option through 2028.
