K'taka: Congress delegation meets Guv, demands action against BJP MLC on Pakistan remarks
Bengaluru: A delegation of Karnataka Congress Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) submitted a complaint to the Governor on Thursday, demanding legal and constitutional action against BJP MLC N. Ravikumar for allegedly calling Kalaburagi Deputy Commissioner Fouzia Taranum "a Pakistani".
The delegation further demanded action against the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, for comparing RDPR, IT and BT Minister Priyank Kharge to a 'dog.'
The delegation, led by the Leader of the House in the Legislative Council, Minister for Minor Irrigation, Science and Technology, N.S. Boseraju and Chief Whip Saleem Ahmad met the Governor and submitted the complaint.
Speaking to reporters, Minister Boseraju said, 'BJP MLCs N. Ravikumar and Chalavadi Narayanaswamy have made unconstitutional statements in public. In a democracy, such remarks are unacceptable. While BJP leaders claim to stand for 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,' their actions are divisive.'
They have made it a habit to make statements against the Constitution. Narayanaswamy's derogatory comments against the Dalit community warrant his expulsion from the Council. We have urged the Governor to take legal and constitutional action against Ravikumar for his offensive remarks about a public officer, he demanded.
Chief Whip Saleem Ahmad said that the Congress delegation submitted two complaints to the Governor — one against N. Ravikumar and another against Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, the Opposition Leader in the Council.
'Narayanaswamy has made irresponsible and unconstitutional remarks against Minister Priyank Kharge, while Ravikumar has questioned whether an IAS officer (Fouzia Taranum) came from Pakistan. Such behaviour is highly condemnable. We have urged the Governor to suspend both of them. Their statements are spreading a dangerous message in society,' he said, adding that the Governor assured an inquiry into the matter.
The Congress delegation included MLCs Vasanth Kumar, Anil Kumar M.L., Jagadev Guttedar, S. Ravi, D.T. Srinivas, Dinesh Gooligowda, Channaraj Hattiholi, Basavangouda Badarli, Puttanna, Naseer Ahmad, Govindaraju, Nagaraj Yadav, and Manjunath Bhandari.
The remark made by BJP MLC and Opposition Chief Whip in the Legislative Council, N. Ravikumar, calling Kalaburagi Deputy Commissioner Fouzia Taranum a "Pakistani" had triggered a controversy in Karnataka.
The Kalaburagi Police have lodged an FIR against Ravikumar in connection with the incident, are preparing to initiate legal action against him. They have issued a notice to appear before them for questioning.
Since he has been booked under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, which is non-bailable, the police have the authority to arrest him at any time.
Police have booked Ravikumar under various Sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 197 (acts likely to cause disharmony, enmity, or hatred between different groups), 224 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty), 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings), 302 (injuring religious sentiments), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 353 (assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty).
The police have also booked Ravikumar under Section 3 (1) (r) of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to shift focus to organisational matters, particularly the appointment of its next national president. While the party has made no official announcement yet, sources suggest that internal deliberations are underway and a formal process could begin as early as mid-June. According to sources cited by Live Hindustan, the BJP has completed organisational elections in most states, which are a necessary precondition under the party constitution before electing the next national president. The recent announcement of 70 district presidents in Uttar Pradesh has further fuelled speculation that the central leadership may soon decide on the BJP chief post. However, the process is said to have been briefly delayed in the wake of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu, and Kashmir on April 22. Party sources reportedly indicate that before the national-level appointment, the BJP may first finalise new state unit presidents in key states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. In Uttar Pradesh, where caste equations are pivotal, a Brahmin face was reportedly being considered earlier. However, a growing demand for an OBC leader has emerged within sections of the party, reported Live Hindustan. This shift could reflect the BJP's broader attempt to consolidate its OBC support base, particularly after recent electoral trends. In Madhya Pradesh, the current leadership structure has an OBC Chief Minister and a Brahmin state president – a balance that has so far worked for the party. However, sources suggest the party is now considering appointing a tribal leader as the state chief, given the relatively low tribal representation in the current state and national leadership. In Uttarakhand, a Brahmin leader is said to be the frontrunner for the state president's post, although no official confirmation has been made. Even as the state-level equations are being finalised, names of potential contenders for the national president's post have started doing the rounds in party circles. Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a key OBC leader from Odisha, known for his organisational acumen and proximity to the central leadership is one of the key bigwigs in the race for the party's president post. Shivraj Singh Chouhan has emerged as another top contender. A former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and now a union minister, is seen as a mass leader with grassroots experience. Manohar Lal Khattar, who recently transitioned from his role as Haryana chief minister to the union cabinet, could represent continuity and administrative experience; hence, he is said to be one of the big three names the BJP may choose from. According to sources, the party's final choice is likely to factor in organisational experience, regional representation, and caste balance. The current national president, JP Nadda, has held the post since January 2020. His term was extended to steer the party through the 2024 general elections. With that mandate now fulfilled, leadership transition discussions have gained momentum. A central election committee is expected to be constituted to oversee the election process, which will include nomination filing, scrutiny, and, if necessary, voting. As of now, it is unclear whether Nadda will seek a second full term or the party will opt for a fresh face. Opposition parties , including the Congress and AAP, are said to be following the developments closely. The new chief will be instrumental in framing electoral narratives ahead of crucial state elections in 2026 and the next Lok Sabha polls in 2029.

Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is working tirelessly with a vision to create a strong, self-reliant and self-sufficient developed country for future generations. While addressing the media during his visit to the BJP State Headquarters on Friday, the Minister noted that the Modi-3.0 administration will complete one year on June 9. Over the past 11 years, the government has operated with the motto 'Nation First,' aligned with the Viksit Bharat 2047 agenda. He emphasised that India has surpassed Japan and is now the fourth-largest economy in the world. Economists project that India could become the third largest economy, surpassing Germany, with a five trillion USD economy by 2027. Sanjay Seth urged BJP party activists and the public to actively participate in the Viksit Bharat agenda. He pointed out that previously, India was a major importer of defense equipment and had not achieved self-reliance in fulfilling a significant portion of its defense needs through domestic production. However, the country is now exporting defense equipment to around 90 countries. He highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the Indian defense forces demonstrated their valor during Operation Sindoor, which successfully destroyed nine terrorist hubs inside Pakistan in just 22 minutes. This operation showcases India's military prowess and the preparedness of its forces. Additionally, the Minister mentioned the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative, which involves the mass plantation of saplings across the country. He said that Tiranga Yatras are being organised even in villages, as the local populations wished to express their support for the soldiers guarding the borders thousands of miles away. As Pawars gear up for NCP Foundation Day events, rival camps expect clarity amid reunion buzz
Rival factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will hold separate Foundation Day gatherings in Pune on June 10 in the backdrop of a growing buzz over a reunion, though both sides insisted there was no such proposal on the table despite frequent meetings between their top leaders. Maharashtra NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) president Jayant Patil clarified that talk about both the factions coming together was "only in the air", and there has been no discussion on a possible reunion. Talking to PTI, Mr. Patil said, ''On June 10, we will celebrate the 26th year of foundation of our party. It is our Foundation Day, and there is no formal talk of a reunion between the two factions. The buzz is only in the air. But I think there is a possibility of clarity on the issue after the Foundation Day programme." ' 'Apart from Pawar saheb (NCP-SP president Sharad Pawar), four to five prominent office-bearers will speak at the gathering," the former Minister informed. Sharad Pawar will address workers and office-bearers of the opposition party at the function in the morning, and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who heads the ruling NCP, will participate in a Foundation Day programme of his faction the same evening in Pune. State NCP president Sunil Tatkare also clarified there was no proposal or discussion on a merger or an alliance between the two groups. Frequent meetings between Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar at public and private events have fuelled speculations about the factions reuniting after a split in the party in July 2023. Both NCP and NCP (SP) have chosen Pune, the home turf of the Pawar family, for their Foundation Day festivities. While Sharad Pawar will address his supporters at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir in Shivajinagar, Ajit Pawar will speak at his party's event at Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Sports Complex in Balewadi. According to political observers, party workers are expecting clarity and future roadmaps for their respective factions from the top leadership. The NCP was founded on June 10, 1999, after then-Congress leaders Sharad Pawar, P A Sangma and Tariq Anwar raised the issue of party president Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin, leading to their expulsion. While Mr. Sangma is no more, Mr. Anwar is back in the Congress. The NCP later joined hands with the Congress and formed a coalition government in Maharashtra, where they remained in power for three straight terms (1999-2014). In 2019, the NCP and the Congress joined hands with the united Shiv Sena and formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, which collapsed in June 2022. In 2023, Ajit Pawar, then in the opposition, walked away with a majority of NCP legislators, and joined the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena combine and became a deputy chief minister. After the 2024 assembly polls, the BJP-led Mahayuti retained power with a thumping majority, and Ajit Pawar joined the cabinet of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as his second deputy. With the delayed local body polls likely to be held later this year, much is at stake for the ruling Mahayuti alliance, which received a massive victory in the assembly polls, and the opposition MVA, which suffered a severe drubbing in November last year. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the NCP (SP) performed well in Maharashtra, winning eight of the 10 Lok Sabha seats it contested. On the other hand, the ruling coalition partner NCP bagged just one seat. In the assembly polls held six months later, there was a reversal in poll fortunes, with the NCP winning 41 seats and the NCP (SP) just 10 in the 288-member assembly.
