Ranking Ireland's winning Eurovision songs. Will record be broken by Sweden?
What was once an incredible feat for the country has since been tied with the Swedes last year, with it being increasingly likely that they'll go back to back with KAJ and Bara bada bastu.
And while some (myself included) who grew up when we sent Jedward and Dustin the Turkey would balk at the idea that Ireland were once a powerhouse at the song contest, it's true; the Eurovision was a rare instance of us doing well at a competition on an international stage.
With that, we at Extra.ie have decided to take a trip down memory lane at what once was, and rank the seven songs we won the Eurovision Song Contest with. Being written by two time winner Johnny Logan, Linda Martin's second attempt at Eurovision kicked off the country's three-peat in 1992. Pic: Sipa/REX/Shutterstock
This isn't to say that this is the worst of the bunch, but the competition really is that stiff for Linda. And hey, some people even prefer her previous entrant in Terminal 3, which saw her place second nine years earlier.
Written by two-time winner Johnny Logan (much more on him later), the song 'only' got the coveted douze point from three countries, but kicked off the country's illustrious three-peat of Eurovision wins in the 1990s. So we have Linda to thank for that!
The first of three wins for Johnny Logan (two as a singer, one as a songwriter), What's Another Year was, in hindsight, foreshadowing to his further success.
But alas, this is the weaker of his two wins (I feel ye already know where his other song will end up…), but is still a cute song; and got 12 points seven times from the voters. 19-year-old Dana's song All Kings of Everything was sent to Eurovision in 1970, and the rest, as they say, is history. Ye know I'm right!
Perhaps it's a generational gap, but aside from Dana's just raw talent as a singer (it's absolutely phenomenal that she did this at 19-years-old), this is one of those songs that you'll either love or find a bit boring. But again, Dana sang this, and the rest, as they say, is history.
If there's one thing the Eurovision apparently loved from Ireland, it was an auld ballad — and despite not having anyone to shop it due to the association with Eurovision, Niamh convinced a young Simon Cowell who released the song internationally.
With the song also being lauded as having 'lots of old fashioned qualities,' another fun fact is that the demo of the song was sung by a then unknown, young Idina Menzel. Yep, the original Elphaba helped Ireland win the Eurovision back to back. 1996 was the last time Ireland won the Eurovision, with Eimear Quinn being the last one to bring home the title for the country. Pic: Lehtikuva/Shutterstock
The last time we won the competition, and being the fourth time in five years that we won, Eimear Quinn's incredible vocal performance made this a bit of an underrated song in the grand scheme of things.
Often called a proper Celtic song, Eimear's vocal talent meant that we ran away with the then record shattering 7th win; with the country still waiting for an eighth nearly three decades. Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan got Ireland their second of the back-to-back-to-back wins — but were (kinda) overshadowed by the interval act: Riverdance. Pic: BSR Agency/Gentle Look via Getty Images
It was always going to be a toss up between this and 1st, but I think Paul and Charlie, while fantastic, being the second most talked about performance of Eurovision 1994 behind the interval performance, knocks a point off.
While Eurovision nowadays is all flashy and extravagant, there is something just brilliant about a song like this — no orchestra, no backing tracks, just a piano, guitar and two singers. And if you want to feel old, gigven the timeline of the song started 32 years before the year of the performance, if Rock n Roll Kids were released today it would start off in 1993. Jesus. Of course it was. Pic: Andres Poveda
Becoming the first act ever to win the contest twice (at least we'll always have that record), Johnny Logan's ballad was arguably Ireland's most successful Eurovision song outside of the contest — reaching the top 5 in the charts in 15 countries, being re-recorded twice, and even being the song used in the incredibly mid-200s McDonald's Eurosaver ad campaign.
While four ballads have won the competition for Ireland, Hold Me Now is absolutely the best of the best. And hey, put a dance beat behind it, and we could even take back that title. What do you say, Johnny? 2026?

Rose of Tralee contestants explain why it is more than a 'lovely girls' pageant
The Rose of Tralee is more than just a 'lovely girls' pageant according to three very accomplished Roses who took to the stage last night to compete for the title of the 2025 Rose. Washington DC Rose Soracha McGrath, who has carved out a very successful career at the totem of global finance, with her high-power position in the World Bank, jetted all the way from the U.S to take to the stage. She told that a rose is far more than just a pretty flower. 'Taking part in the Rose of Tralee, amongst 32 accomplished and confident women is a true celebration of women who have achieved so much individually and as a group,' said Soracha. London Rose Shauna Sammon, Boston and New England Rose Maeve Kelly and Texas Rose Sara Costa. Pic; Domnick Walsh 'I am a trainee nurse and I never thought I could get up there on stage in front of so many people like I did tonight. Dáithí Ó Sé and Kathryn Thomas steer the ship at the launch of the 2025 Rose of Tralee International Festival as they meet this year's 32 International Roses. Pic: Andres Poveda Kerry Rose Laura Daly, also told that the annual competition, which celebrates its 65th year this year, is very close to her heart, and indeed home. She added that being chosen to represent her county is a dream come true as she follows in the footsteps of the 65 years of 'truly inspirational' women who have tread the Rose stage in bygone years. Kerry Rose Laura Daly, Cork Rose Nancy Lehane, Fermanagh Rose Caoimhe Connolly and Carlow Rose Katie Ryan. Pic: Domnick Walsh 'There are so many women who have stood on the stage as we just stood and talked about themselves and their life experiences and their hopes and dreams. Sweden is moving a century-old, 670-tonne church three miles down the road - here's how
The Journal / YouTube HOW DO YOU move one of Sweden's most beloved wooden churches down the road? With a little bit of engineering, a lot of prayer — and some Eurovision for good luck. The Kiruna Church — called Kiruna Kyrka in Swedish — and its belfry are being moved this week along a five-kilometre (three-mile) route east to a new city centre as part of the town's relocation. The world's largest underground iron-ore mine is threatening to swallow the town, meaning the church and the rest of the town need to be moved. Vicar Lena Tjarnberg, left, and Bishop Asa Nystrom bless the Kiruna Church shortly before it begins its journey to the new town centre. PA PA This week, thousands of visitors have descended upon Kiruna, Sweden's northernmost town, at 200 kilometres above the Arctic Circle. It's home to roughly 23,000 inhabitants, including members of the Sami Indigenous people, spread over nearly 19,500 square kilometres. Lena Tjarnberg, the church's vicar, kicked off the move with a blessing on Tuesday morning. The church's move is expected to last until Wednesday afternoon. Advertisement The church's relocation has become a media spectacle, with a visit from the king and performances from Eurovision stars. PA PA This week's move has turned into a two-day, highly choreographed media spectacle, run by LKAB, the state-owned mining company, and featuring an appearance by Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf. Musical performances will include a set from KAJ, Sweden's 2025 Eurovision entry, who had been the bookies' favourite to win this year's contest. Known for both the Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights, Kiruna and the surrounding area are a major draw year-round for visitors to Swedish Lapland. But not everyone is thrilled about LKAB's extravaganza. Lars-Marcus Kuhmunen, chairman of one of the Sami reindeer herding organisations in Kiruna, said LKAB's plans for a new mine could threaten reindeer migration routes and imperil the livelihood of herders in the area. The move of Kiruna's town centre, including the church, has been in the works since 2004. Engineers have widened a road to 80 feet and dismantled a viaduct in order to facilitate the move. PA PA As the mine expanded deeper underground, residents began seeing cracks in buildings and roads. In order to reach a new depth of 1,365 meters — and to prevent Kiruna from being swallowed up — officials began moving buildings to a new downtown at a safe distance from the mine. As of July, 25 buildings had been lifted up onto beams and wheeled east. Sixteen, including the church, remain. At approximately 40 metres wide with a weight of 672 metric tons, the church required extra effort. Engineers widened a major road from nine metres to 24 metres and dismantled a viaduct to make way for a new intersection. A driver, using a large control box, is piloting the church through the route as it travels roughly 12 hours over Tuesday and Wednesday, with a pause each day for fika, the traditional Swedish afternoon coffee break. It's expected to move at a varying pace between 0.5 and 1.5 kilometres per hour. Stefan Holmblad Johansson, LKAB's project manager for the move, would not say how much it has cost the mining company.
