Mumbai, Aug 19 (PTI) The new wave of digital and workplace transformation is being led by mid-career professionals, with a significant percentage of them seeking additional training to stay ahead in their fields, a report said on Tuesday. According to the 'Work Ahead report' by global job site Indeed, 56 per cent of mid-career professionals feel they want significantly more training to stay future-ready, compared to just 41 per cent of their younger counterparts. Confidence is highest among respondents aged 35 to 54 years (mid-career professionals), nearly half of whom (49 per cent) report being ready to navigate AI-integrated workplaces, outpacing their younger peers aged 18 to 24 years, said the report. "There's a determined confidence building across India's workforce. Mid-career professionals, in particular, are not only using AI but actively seeking upskilling opportunities to master it. The rise in interest around Agentic AI signals that we are at the beginning of a transformation, one where job seekers are not just responding to change, but leading it," Indeed India Head of Sales Sashi Kumar said. The 'Work Ahead report' by Indeed is based on research conducted by market research company Censuswide among 3,001 workers (blue-collar and white-collar) and business leaders across India. The data was collected in May 2025, and the survey was done across 12 industries, including technology, retail, manufacturing, travel, legal, healthcare, HR, and others, spanning designation levels from clerical to business owners. The report further found that 34 per cent of those surveyed expect to use Generative AI tools frequently in the near future. A quarter of respondents are already anticipating the adoption of Agentic AI tools - AI systems that can autonomously complete complex tasks, it stated. Even in traditionally hands-on roles, the report found that AI is making inroads, as among the blue-collar workers surveyed, 70 per cent said technology helps them at work, and two in 10 are already using Generative AI in their roles, from streamlining paperwork to improving customer service. Around 29 per cent of the surveyed workforce said they are seeking access to self-paced online training programs to upgrade their skills on their own terms. "As we move ahead, upskilling in AI wouldn't just be good practice, it'll be the career accelerator. Workers who build AI skills will be better positioned for higher pay, promotions, and future roles, a trend that we already see picking up," Kumar added.

Buying A TV Or AC? GST Cut Could Save You Up To Rs 10,000 This Diwali
Experts say the Diwali GST cut could trigger the biggest drop in consumer prices in years, boosting sales and benefiting buyers whose incomes lag rising costs In a festive boost for consumers, the government is slated to slash GST rates on several daily-use items, a move expected to lower prices ahead of Diwali. The revised rates, likely to be rolled out before the festival, are aimed at easing household expenses and bringing much-needed relief to the common man. The government may also reduce the GST from 28% to 18% on TV sets larger than 32 inches, air conditioners (ACs), and dishwashers. This reduction could result in TV prices dropping by up to Rs 10,000, which home appliance manufacturing companies anticipate will boost sales during the festive period. Industry experts believe that this reduction in GST ahead of a major festival like Diwali will stimulate substantial festive sales. They suggest that this GST cut could result in the most significant decline in consumer prices in years, especially benefiting buyers whose incomes have not kept pace with rising prices, thus revitalising a stagnant market. AC Prices May Drop By Rs 2,500 The proposed GST reduction on ACs from the current 28% to 18% could lower their prices by approximately Rs 1500 to Rs 2500, depending on the model. According to a PTI report, Blue Star Managing Director B Thiagarajan has praised this move and urged the government to implement it swiftly. He mentioned that the price impact could be around 10% since GST is applied to the final price. Panasonic Life Solutions India Chairman Manish Sharma noted that if GST on ACs and other appliances is reduced from 28% to 18%, their market prices could decrease by 6-7% as GST is typically calculated on the base price. Sharma added that the price reduction for ACs would range from Rs 1500 to Rs 2500, varying by model. Godrej Appliances stated that the proposed tax slab reduction would significantly boost consumption and appliance demand. Cars Will Also Become Cheaper Cars will also become cheaper as entry-level hatchbacks, small sedans, and mini-SUVs could be included in the 18% GST tax slab. Currently, these vehicles face 28% GST and an additional 1-3% cess, bringing the total tax to 31%. Should the GST reduction take effect, vehicles such as the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, Renault Kwid, Maruti Suzuki Wagon, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura, Tata Tigor, Tata Punch, Hyundai Xstar, and Renault Kiger will see a decrease in prices. India exempts import duties on cotton till Sept 30 amid Trump tariff tensions
The government of India has exempted import duties on cotton till September 30 in what is being seen as a relief for country's garment industry, which is reeling from the 50 per cent tariff on shipments to the United States. Before the exemption, cotton imports were subject to an 11 per cent duty.(PTI/File) The temporary suspension of the duty, announced in a government order late on Monday, comes into effect from August 19. US President Donald Trump has imposed 50 per cent tariff on India - comprising an existing 25 per cent levy and an additional 25 per cent set to take effect later this month as a penalty for Russian oil purchase. Before the exemption, cotton imports were subject to an 11 per cent duty. Through a notification issued by the ministry of finance, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) said all imports under heading 5201—covering raw cotton—will be exempt from duties between 19 August and 30 September, according to a LiveMint report. Industry bodies such as the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) had urged the government to scrap the cotton import duty to help make the sector more competitive. The development reflected in the stock market on Tuesday as textile makers including Vardhman Textiles, Raymond Lifestyle, Indo Count and Welspun Living surged 3 per cent-8 per cent, according to a Reuters report.
