Filipino Times23-05-2025
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared Friday, June 6, 2025, a regular holiday nationwide in observance of Eid'l Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice.
Marcos signed Proclamation No. 911 following the recommendation of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) based on the 1446 Hijrah Islamic Lunar Calendar.
'Following the 1446 Hijrah Islamic Lunar Calendar, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos has recommended that June 6, 2025, Friday, be declared a national holiday, in observance of Eid'l Adha,' the proclamation stated.
Eid'l Adha is one of the two most significant holidays in the Islamic calendar, alongside Eid'l Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.
The celebration honors the story of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah. Traditionally, animals such as sheep, goats, cows, or camels are slaughtered as part of the commemoration.

PH, UAE Celebrate 51 Years of Diplomatic Relations, Push for Deeper Economic Ties

The Philippines and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) marked the 51st anniversary of their diplomatic relations, reaffirming stronger economic cooperation and gearing up for the anticipated signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). In a statement, UAE Ambassador to the Philippines Mohamed Alqataam Alzaabi highlighted how bilateral ties have grown across trade, development, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. Relations hit a milestone in November 2024 when President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited Abu Dhabi and met with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Over the last three years, both countries signed 22 agreements spanning energy transition, culture, legal cooperation, and security. Among the latest initiatives are the UAE's USD 20 million commitment to rehabilitate the Pasig River and a USD 15 billion renewable energy partnership with Masdar to deliver up to 10 gigawatts of clean power by 2030. The UAE, home to over one million Filipinos, reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding their welfare while pursuing deeper collaboration. 'As the UAE and the Philippines celebrate 51 years of enduring friendship, both countries reaffirm their commitment to advancing cooperation, fostering innovation, and promoting shared prosperity,' Ambassador Alzaabi said. Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro also welcomed the ambassador in Manila, saying the Philippines looks forward to the CEPA signing in the coming weeks.

PH to open Migrant Workers Office in Nigeria to support OFWs across Africa

The Philippines plans to open a Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Abuja to provide greater protection and assistance to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Nigeria and 12 other West and Central African countries. The initiative aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to safeguard the rights and welfare of Filipinos working abroad, officials said. Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, Philippine Ambassador to Nigeria Mersole Mellejor, and other DMW officials met with Nigeria's Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Labor Minister Muhammad Maigadi Dingyadi to discuss labor cooperation, protection measures, and potential job opportunities. Cacdac thanked Nigeria for hosting more than 6,000 OFWs and highlighted prospects for collaboration in business process outsourcing, migration support, and skilled labor deployment. Foreign Minister Tuggar recalled the contributions of Filipino teachers in Nigeria during the 1970s and cited opportunities for Filipino professionals in sectors such as electricity, solar energy, and emerging industries. Labor Minister Dingyadi expressed support for establishing the labor office and said Nigeria is ready to explore a bilateral labor agreement. Officials said Nigeria's growing infrastructure, construction, agribusiness, and services sectors present potential employment opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled Filipino workers. The planned Abuja MWO will act as a frontline office for OFWs in the region, enabling faster responses to labor concerns, providing legal and welfare aid, and improving coordination with host governments and employers.
