China to continue anti-dumping tariff on Indian fibre optic products

Zawya7 days ago
China's commerce ministry will continue with anti-dumping tariffs of up to 30.6% on single-mode optical fibre imports from India, which were due to expire on Thursday, as it begins a final review of an investigation initiated in 2013.
The review will take up to a year, the ministry said on Wednesday in a statement.
China first imposed the tariffs in 2014 and had extended them in August 2020.

South Korea looks to address legal uncertainties posed by GenAI

The data protection watchdog for South Korea recently put forth a proposed personal data processing criteria for generative AI (genAI). The goal of these guidelines is to addressing the uncertainties in their existing personal information protection act. Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPS) chair Ko Haksoo Ko noted the guidelines aim to 'provide clarity to iron out legal uncertainties that AI practitioners have encountered and systematically incorporate privacy-safeguarding perspectives'. The proposal incorporates legal interpretation and safeguards criteria, as well as details how to develop AI privacy governance centred on a chief privacy officer, responsible for internally supervising compliance and privacy risk management. The draft criteria divides the lifecycle of genAI into four stages: purpose setting; establishing strategies; AI training and development; and application and management. It also classifies genAI models in three categories: LLM as a service, off-the-shelf LLMs and self-developed LLMs. PIPS explained the guidance was finalised following consultation with a public-private policy advisory council, providing businesses with concrete measures for making use of personal data to be trained on genAI. Earlier in the year, the commission ordered app stores to suspend downloads of DeepSeek's AI platform, sparked by concerns over the Chinese start-up's data management practices. Tron will make debut in Consensys' crypto wallet MetaMask

The Tron network will be integrated into Consensys' crypto wallet MetaMask, becoming the third major non-Ethereum-based chain to get support since MetaMask launched in 2016. On Tuesday, Tron DAO announced the strategic partnership with MetaMask, which will natively integrate the Tron blockchain into the Consensys-developed self-custodial crypto wallet. 'MetaMask's extensive user base and established reputation make it a vital gateway to decentralized applications,' said Tron DAO community spokesperson Sam Elfarra. Angel Gonzalez-Capizzi, director of business development at MetaMask, commented on Tron's strong presence in Asia, adding that the integration helps build bridges across regions and ecosystems. 'Integrating a new network into MetaMask requires careful evaluation across security, technical, and user-experience dimensions. The sequencing of integrations isn't about market cap rankings but about aligning product readiness, security reviews, and demand from our users. Tron met those thresholds at this time, which is why we moved forward,' Gonzalez-Capizzi explained to Cointelegraph. MetaMask added native support for the Solana blockchain in May with a new extension enabling users to manage Solana SPL tokens. MetaMask also supports BNB Smart Chain and Sei, with the rest of its integrations consisting of Ethereum layer-2 networks. Solana is now live on MetaMask Extension! 🦊 — 🦊 (@MetaMask) May 27, 2025 The addition of the Tron blockchain has been a long time coming, considering it is one of the top 10 blockchains by market capitalization. The partnership could also turn out to be a further positive for Tron, as MetaMask announced the launch of a self-custody crypto card in partnership with Mastercard in April, though it is only available on a limited waiting list basis at the time of writing. Tron gains traction after US election The Tron network has benefited from the crypto regulatory pivot in the United States, with ambitions to go public via a reverse merger in the US. In June, toy maker SRM Entertainment announced it would rebrand as Tron Inc. and adopt a treasury strategy centered on TRX with Tron founder Justin Sun as an adviser. Following the announcement, Eric Trump, a son of US President Donald Trump, denied involvement in Tron's public offering pursuit but said 'I'm the biggest fan of Tron,' adding that he admires Sun and considers him a 'great friend and icon in the crypto space.' Sun has been one of the biggest buyers of Trump's memecoin and attended the president's VIP gala dinner in May. 'Our decision process wasn't tied to political administrations. It was driven by product and security priorities, alongside user demand. That said, clearer regulatory signals in the U.S. are broadly constructive for the digital asset industry, which benefits all networks, including Tron, ' Gonzalez-Capizzi added. TRX continues its uptrend Tron's native token, TRX, surged 166% following the November US election, spiking to an all-time high of $0.43 in early December 2024, though the move was short-lived. The asset has been in a solid uptrend for most of this year, powering past its 2021 market cycle peak, gaining 37% year-to-date, and currently trading at $0.347, according to CoinGecko. Source:

China maintains benchmark lending rates at 3 percent as economic momentum shows signs of weakness

China decided on Wednesday to keep its benchmark lending rates unchanged, continuing to hold the one-year loan prime rate (LPR) steady at 3.0 percent and the over-five-year LPR, which is used as the benchmark for many mortgage rates, at 3.5 percent. This decision aligns with market expectations and marks the third consecutive month that the People's Bank of China (PBoC) has maintained these record low rates without adjustment, China's state agency Xinhua reported. The LPRs serve as critical market-based benchmark lending rates in China, reflecting the financing costs faced by households and businesses. Maintaining these rates at current levels aims to ease the debt service burden on borrowers, potentially encouraging increased investment and consumer spending, which are vital for sustaining economic momentum. The decision to hold the rates steady comes amid recent economic data signaling that China's economy might be experiencing a loss of momentum. Industrial output grew at its slowest pace in eight months in July, and retail sales saw their weakest growth since December 2024. Moreover, the volume of new yuan loans fell for the first time in 20 years, underperforming analysts' expectations, despite broader credit growth showing some signs of improvement. These mixed signals suggest that while the economy is facing challenges, aggressive monetary policy adjustments such as further cuts to benchmark lending rates are not currently deemed necessary by policymakers. Read more: China maintains A+ credit rating from S&P Global as growth projections remain positive Cautious approach to economic recovery China's government and central bank have reiterated a commitment to a moderately loose monetary policy in 2025. This approach seeks to balance the need for economic support with risks related to inflation and financial stability. Instead of broad-based rate cuts, the central bank appears to favor targeted and structural measures to support specific sectors and address the economy's underlying challenges, including reducing industrial overcapacity and dealing with weaker domestic demand amid rising trade frictions, particularly with the U.S. The one-year LPR influences most corporate and household loans, while the five-year LPR is especially important for mortgage rates. By keeping these rates unchanged, the PBoC signals its cautious stance, aiming to support economic recovery while avoiding overheating or adding financial risks. Analysts suggest that although rate cuts could be employed as a tool for economic stimulus, the current view is that other structural and targeted policy measures may be more appropriate to foster sustainable growth. Uncertainty surrounding future easing China's economic resilience was demonstrated in the slower-than-expected deceleration during the second quarter of 2025, despite external pressures such as tariffs and the global trade environment. Nevertheless, domestic demand remains fragile, and deflationary pressures persist, with producer prices falling deeper into deflation in June 2025. These factors contribute to uncertainty about the timing and magnitude of any future easing by the central bank. Market watchers anticipate that the PBoC will continue closely monitoring economic conditions and may adjust its policy stance accordingly. However, expectations lean towards selective easing measures and fine-tuning of monetary policy rather than broad, aggressive rate cuts. This measured approach reflects both confidence in the economy's fundamental strength and caution in the face of external and domestic headwinds.
