Jofra Archer joins England squad for 2nd test against India

LONDON (AP) — Fast bowler Jofra Archer could play his first test in four years after he was added to England's squad on Thursday.
Archer joined up for the second test against India next week at Edgbaston. England leads the five-test series 1-0.
The 30-year-old played the last of his 13 tests in February 2021 in India.
Following his right thumb injury during the Indian Premier League, Archer played his first red-ball game in more than four years this week for Sussex in the English County Championship. He took 1-32 in 18 overs in his only bowling innings. He also batted once for 31 runs.

Associated Press PARIS (AP) — Three-time Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon has failed in her bid to become the first woman to run a mile in under four minutes. Kipyegon, the Olympic 1,500-meter gold medalist from Kenya, ran in 4 minutes, 06.42 seconds at Stade Charléty in Paris on Thursday. Her time was better than her world record of 4:07.64 but won't be recognized by the international federation because the Nike-sponsored event dubbed ' Breaking4: Faith Kipyegon vs. the 4-Minute Mile.' was unofficial. The 31-year-old Kipyegon looked exhausted as she reached the finish and fell on her back as she was surrounded by photographers. Her attempt took place on a balmy summer's evening with a temperature of 25°C and limited wind, in front of an audience of a few thousand people. She used a team of 13 elite pace setters made of 11 men and two women who were positioned in front and behind her to reduce drag. But Kipyegon appeared to struggle midway through the race and failed in her attempt to shave at least 7.65 seconds off her world record. To achieve the feat, Kipyegon would have needed to run each of her four laps an average of about two seconds faster. Among the guests in Paris were Carl Lewis and Kipyegon's fellow Kenyan runner, longtime friend and training partner Eliud Kipchoge. It was more than 71 years ago when British runner Roger Bannister became the first man to eclipse four minutes in 3:59.4. Kipyegon set the women's mile world record nearly two years ago during a Diamond League meet in Monaco. She won her third straight 1,500 Olympic title in Paris last August. Rally of Gods: Punishing four-day Acropolis Rally kicks off in the Greek capital amid heatwave
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — It's dubbed the 'Rally of Gods' — a punishing, four-day event on the World Rally Championship circuit that will take 69 crews from 31 countries across rough, treacherous terrain in Greece. Known for its brutal combination of dust and heat on its twisty, mountainous stages, the Acropolis Rally started on Thursday afternoon with a special stage in the very center of Athens. Unlike much of the rest of the rally, the start will see the cars sliding on city streets outside Greece's parliament building near the foot of the Acropolis. Roads in the Greek capital's center shut down hours before the official start time in preparation for the event. This year's competition comes as the summer's first heatwave hits Greece, with temperatures forecast to surpass 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), which is sure to test the crews. Drivers who completed a 'shakedown' practice stage Thursday morning ahead of the official opening said they were expecting a tough event due to the heat and dust. 'Obviously it's a super hot weekend, so it's going to be intense in the car. Not only in the car, but for everything,' said eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogier of France. The seventh round of the FIA World Rally Championship includes some of the most iconic and challenging stages of the championship and spans four regions in central and southern Greece. Finland's two-time world champion Kalle Rovanpera said it was clear from the shakedown that 'it's going to be quite a tough weekend with the conditions.' 'This area is quite open and we had a lot of dust already, so I think on the stage it's going to be an issue. It's going to be a really tough event this year, rough conditions, so anything can happen,' he said. The four-day competition features 17 special stages over more than 345 kilometers (about 215 miles). The event attracts top teams and drivers, including four world champions: Ogier, Rovanpera, Belgium's Thierry Neuville, and Ott Tanak of Estonia. Neuville, the 2024 world champion, and Japan's Takamoto Katsuta set the fastest time on Thursday's 3.62 kilometer shakedown with a 2 minute, 37.9 second run. Team USA's Bobby Witt Jr. ready for bigger role in 2026 World Baseball Classic
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. is going to again play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, and next year certainly will have a bigger role than last time. Witt announced Thursday that he is committed to playing for the United States and manager Mark DeRosa in the 2026 WBC. It will be Witt's second time on the team. When part of Team USA in 2023, Witt was 22 and the youngest player on the roster who was coming off a standout rookie MLB season. He was a bench player who went 1 for 2 at the plate, and also was a pinch-runner in the ninth inning of the championship game won by Shohei Ohtani and Japan. Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, who will be the U.S. captain, and Pirates ace Paul Skenes have also committed to play for Team USA next spring. 'It's truly an honor,' Witt, who turned 25 two weeks ago, told MLB Network. 'It's something I've kinda dreamed about my whole entire life. Just being part of that team a couple years ago was amazing, and now we're going to bring home the gold.' Witt was the runner-up to Judge in the American League MVP voting last season, when the shortstop led the majors with a .332 batting average. Witt hit .285 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs in the Royals' first 80 games this year. ___
