MONTPELIER, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – Vermont's Bennington Battle Monument, one of the tallest buildings in the state and the site of a pivotal victory during the American Revolution, will be the first of Vermont's State Historic Sites to open for the 2025 season, announced the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation on Friday.
Vermont's Green Mountain Boys, along with volunteers for Massachusetts, kept British troops from capturing provisions stored at the Bennington military depot in 1777. The present-day 306-foot obelisk was dedicated in 1891 by President Benjamin Harrison. The site will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day through the end of October.
Mount Independence, Chimney Point, Calvin Coolidge, and Hubbardton Battlefield will all open one week later, on May 23. Chester A. Arthur State Historic Site, the site of Vermont's first U.S. president, will open on May 24.
'The Vermont State Historic Sites present history where it happened and provide exciting experiences for everyone,' said Laura V. Trieschmann, State Historic Preservation Officer. 'We invite you to discover Vermont's rich heritage and how it impacted our national story.'
Mount Independence will display a mural by Constantino Brumidi, artist for the U.S. Capitol. The site includes several hiking trails ranging from moderate to challenging. It will be open every day, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Chimney Point, located at the foot of the Lake Champlain Bridge, explores Native American, early French colonial, and early American culture, and has been inhabited for nearly 9,000 years. It will be open Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Hubbardton Battlefield is the site of the only Revolutionary War battle fought entirely within present-day Vermont. It will be open Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site preserves the birthplace and childhood home of the 30th president of the United States. It has installed a new exhibit in its museum examining the influence of the ideals of the Revolutionary war on his administration. It will be open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Chester Arthur State Historic Site, the first owned by the state of Vermont, preserves what was originally believed to be the site of the president's birth, though this was later disproven. It includes a reconstruction of his boyhood home and church. It will be open weekends only, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
General admission for the Bennington Battle Monument is $8 and varies for other sites, but any Vermonter can check out a free pass from their local library which provides access to all historic sites for up to 8 people. Veterans are admitted free, and special day passes are also available for Vermont seniors, with reduced admission for children 14 or younger.

A look at the U.S. Open's luxurious club seating, featuring chefs, an open bar and impeccable views

Each day, thousands of golf fans flood the Oakmont Country Club to catch U.S. Open action. Most people watch from the grass or grandstands, but some will enjoy the championship in a more luxurious style from the club seating. What is the 1895 Club at the U.S. Open? It's hard to miss the 1895 Club. The two-story temporary building sits within view of several holes that will make or break a golfer this week. "It's one of the few spots on course you don't have to leave the space to really see everything," said Brandon Wrobel, senior sales manager of hospitality for the USGA. The USGA started the club last year, naming it after the first year of the U.S Open Championship. The first floor is set up to be more of a club. The upper floor resembles more of a sports bar vibe. "This space is massive. We started when we looked at this championship, debating on what it would look like. And we got to the point here where we sold out fully in this space. The only time we have a little bit of tickets left is on Wednesday," Wrobel said on Tuesday. Tickets for the 1895 Club cost a pretty penny. The price of admission is a tad over $905, but that includes the fees. It also includes cart rides at the course, chefs and an open bar. "We try to be as white glove as you possibly can be on a golf course. The vibes are always great in this space when you have the atmosphere up here," Wrobel said. After starting this last year, the USGA feels it has worked out some tweaks and hopes the five days for the club enhance the fan experience. "We try to find the best spot on course with beautiful views as you take a look around the course and everywhere we go here," Wrobel said. The club holds about 650 people, and once the championship is over, the two-story structure will be taken down like the rest of the tents set up around the course.

Airlines offering vouchers, new flights for passengers impacted by airport delays during Army parade in DC

Passengers flying through Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Saturday will experience delays as the Army celebrates its 250th birthday with a parade and flyover in Washington, DC. The celebration, which coincides with President Donald Trump's birthday, will impact vehicle and airline traffic. The Federal Aviation Administration said it will issue temporary flight restrictions for the Washington area during the celebration, which begins with a parade at 6:30 p.m. and ends with fireworks at 9:45 p.m. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, 65 flights are scheduled to arrive at Reagan airport in Northern Virginia and 39 are scheduled to depart, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics firm. The airport is accommodating for the military flyovers along the parade route and a fireworks display, according to its website. The FAA is working with the Department of Defense to finalize a flyover plan, which will detail the aircraft involved. 'The FAA will implement traffic management initiatives at DCA before, during, and after the event to ensure safety and will facilitate a return to normal operations once the event concludes,' the agency said in a statement. 'During the peak of the celebration, the TMI stops all arrivals and departures.' United Airlines told CNN it is offering a travel waiver for Reagan flyers and is adding two additional departures and two arrivals at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia as an alternative. Delta Air Lines has a fare-difference waiver for passengers who want to move their booked travel to another day. Southwest Airlines said passengers on the approximately 20 scheduled flights can anticipate some delays, but it is planning for no cancellations. There is also a travel waiver in place for Southwest flyers. Alaska Airlines' exposure is fairly limited during the celebration window, and the airline canceled one flight to San Francisco International Airport and rebooked it to Dulles. It estimates the three flights scheduled during the time frame to be delayed for an hour. The hold on airport traffic comes after the January midair collision between an American Airlines regional jet and an Army Black Hawk military helicopter. The crash, which killed 67 people, led to a ban on helicopter traffic on a four-mile stretch over the Potomac River.
