Thai Lion Air plane grounded in Kolkata following technical snag

Indian Express2 days ago
A Thai Lion Air flight to Bangkok was grounded at the Kolkata airport in the early hours of Saturday after it developed technical glitches, officials said.
The flight with 130 passengers and seven crew on board returned to the parking bay from the runway, they said.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft landed at the Kolkata airport around 1.23 am with 151 passengers on board and was supposed to take off at 2.35 am for Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport (DMK), they said.
However, it developed a flap-related problem, following which it returned to the parking bay after pushback and subsequently, the flight had to be cancelled, they added.
'Flaps are very important components of an aircraft. The flaps are extended during take off to produce lift for the aircraft. Similarly, they are extended during landing to create drag to slow down the aircraft,' Sumanta Roy Choudhury, a retired captain who worked in multiple airlines, told PTI.
All the passengers were provided with hotel accommodation, an airline official said.
The aircraft had to be grounded in Kolkata as the company engineer on board could not solve the technical problem, he said.
Two more engineers will be flown in on Saturday night from the airline's base in Bangkok, and they will help in fixing the problem, he added.
As a result of this incident, a Qatar Airways plane from Doha to Kolkata got delayed for parking by 25 minutes, an Airports Authority of India official said.

Future very strong and bright' as Indias consumption boosts travel: Tata Sons Chairman

New Delhi, Jul 7 (PTI) Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran on Monday exuded confidence that the future looks "very strong and bright" as growing consumption in India will drive the growth of the travel sector, sharing his outlook at the Tata Group-owned Indian Hotels Company Limited's (IHCL) AGM. The total portfolio has expanded to 380 hotels. "In terms of financial performance, our total standalone revenue was at ₹ 5,145 crore, with a profit after tax of ₹ 1,430 crore. On a consolidated basis, our revenues were about ₹ 8,565 crore, and our profit after tax was ₹ 1,908 crore. "Our consolidated EBITDA margin touched 38 per cent. IHCL also reported a free cash flow of ₹ 1,100 crore in 2024-25 and now has a very strong cash reserve of over ₹ 3,000 crore," the Tata Sons Chairman said.

UAE Golden Visa 2025: How can Indians apply for lifetime residency without investment in the UAE

UAE Golden Visa Application Process 2025: The UAE government has introduced an updated kind of Golden Visa that allows for long-term residency without the requirement to invest in property or a company. According to sources engaged in the process, the 'new nomination-based visa policy' now allows applicants to get the visa by paying a one-time cost of AED 100,000 (about Rs 23.3 lakh). Initially started in 2019, the Golden Visa programme was intended for investors, entrepreneurs, and highly qualified persons. Rayad Kamal Ayub, Managing Director of the UAE-based Rayad Group, told PTI, 'This is a golden opportunity for Indians to get the UAE's Golden Visa.' Applications from India and Bangladesh are now being accepted as part of a trial initiative. Indian nationals are anticipated to submit over 5,000 applications in the first three months. Rayad Group and Visa Services Provider VFS are in charge of assessing and forwarding applications to the UAE government. Applicants do not need to visit Dubai. They can apply through: India's participation in the pilot indicates the strengthening connections between the two countries. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and the UAE, which went into force in May 2022, has expanded bilateral commercial, cultural, and strategic collaboration. The nomination-based visa is part of the larger CEPA framework and is planned to be expanded to other partner nations, including China, in subsequent phases. (Using inputs from PTI)

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the UAE has launched a new type of Golden Visa, one that doesn't require large investments in property or business, but is instead based on nomination. This is a major shift from the usual route to long-term residency, which has typically favoured wealthy investors. And for Indian nationals, who form one of the largest expat communities in the UAE, it's a welcome development. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD So, what exactly is this new Golden Visa all about? Who can apply, what are the benefits, and how does the process work? Here's everything you need to know. What is UAE's new Golden Visa programme? The UAE's revamped Golden Visa programme is widening its scope to include a much broader range of skilled professionals. It now welcomes scientists, executives, school teachers, principals, university faculty, and frontline workers, as well as nurses with over 15 years of experience. What's interesting is the inclusion of content creators, YouTubers, podcasters, and even accredited e-sports professionals aged 25 and above. Luxury yacht owners and maritime executives are also among those eligible. This marks a notable shift from the previous Golden Visa scheme, which was mostly reserved for entrepreneurs, top students, investors, and highly specialised professionals. Veteran actor Rajinikanth was granted a Golden Visa by the UAE government last year. File image/ X Under the new nomination-based policy, Indians can now obtain the UAE's coveted Golden Visa by paying a fee of AED 100,000 (approximately Rs 23.3 lakh), according to people involved in the process who spoke to PTI. In the first phase of this rollout, India and Bangladesh have been selected for testing the new visa model. A consultancy firm called Rayad Group has been tasked with piloting the nomination-based application process in India. Rayad Kamal Ayub, Managing Director of Rayad Group, said this is a 'golden opportunity' for Indians to secure long-term residency in the UAE. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD As per the group's estimates, more than 5,000 Indians are expected to apply for the visa over the next three months. What is the selection process like? The UAE has a structured process in place to ensure only eligible and credible candidates are considered for the new Golden Visa programme. 'Whenever an applicant applies for this Golden Visa, we will first check their background, which will include anti-money laundering and criminal record checks, as well as their social media,' said Rayad Kamal Ayub, Managing Director of Rayad Group, told PTI. Beyond basic background screening, the evaluation will also consider how the applicant can contribute to the UAE's economy or society. This includes areas like culture, finance, trade, science, start-ups, and professional services. File image/Reuters Once these checks are complete, Rayad Group forwards the application to the UAE government, which takes the final call on whether the applicant qualifies for the nomination-based Golden Visa. Applicants don't need to travel to Dubai to initiate the process. Pre-approval can be secured from their home country. 'Applications can be submitted through One Vasco (visa concierge service company) centres in India and Bangladesh, our registered offices, our online portal, or even through our dedicated call centre,' Kamal explained. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Are family members eligible for this Visa? Yes, family members are included. According to Kamal, those who secure the nomination-based Golden Visa will be allowed to bring their family members to the UAE. In fact, visa holders will also have the option to employ staff and participate in business or professional activities in the country. Unlike property-based visas, which lapse upon property sale, the nomination-based Golden Visa is permanent. The initiative shows the UAE's growing efforts to strengthen ties with India, which has been selected as the first country for this pilot project. The move comes after the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two nations in May 2022. The visa is part of a broader CEPA-linked strategy aimed at improving collaboration with partner countries. While India and Bangladesh are part of the first phase, other CEPA members, including China, may be brought into the programme in the future. With input from agencies
