With the start of the college football season less than two weeks away, high expectations are high for the Texas Longhorns. They are currently ranked as the top team in the nation and have been a popular team in preseason watch lists. That continued one Tuesday when Arch Manning earned a spot on the preseason watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The award is given each year to the top senior or upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class.
For many, Manning's latest recognition comes as no surprise. He is seen as one of the best quarterbacks in the nations and has impressed at Texas when given the opportunity.
During the 2024 campaign, the New Orleans native completed 61 of his 90 passes for 939 yards. He also found the end zone nine times and averaged 93.9 yards a game. While filling in for an injured Quinn Ewers, Manning was a threat with his legs, recording 108 yards on 25 attempts.
As Maning showed fans a taste of what the future held, excitement started to build in Austin. The Isidore Newman High School product was also able to take care of the football, only throwing two interceptions. So in his college career, Maning is 2-0 as a starter.

Over the last few weeks, Manning has been a popular name in headlines. He has also earned spots on preseason watch lists for the Davey O'Brien Award, Walter Camp National Player of the Year Award, and Maxwell Award. At the beginning of the month, he was named First-Team All-America by The Sporting News.
When it comes to the Johnny Unitas award, the Longhorns have had success in the past. Last season, Quinn Ewers was named a Top 10 finalist for the award. The last Longhorns quarterback to win it was Colt McCoy in 2009.
If Manning can meet his high expectations, then he could join McCoy as the only Longhorns QB to take home the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award when the winner is named in December.

ESPN's Stephen A. Smith reacts to Cam Newton's jersey retirement: 'it's long overdue'

Auburn football has been the center of media coverage this week, for good and controversial reasons. One piece of "good news" that broke this week was the program's plan to honor Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton by retiring his iconic No. 2 jersey during the Georgia game in October at Jordan-Hare Stadium. One of Newton's ventures since stepping away from football has been with ESPN, where he contributes to the show "First Take." The host of the show, Stephen A. Smith, expressed his excitement for Newton during a recent episode, saying it was "well deserved." 'First of all, I'm incredibly happy for him. As far as I'm concerned, it's long overdue, it's well-deserved,' Smith said of Newton during Wednesday's First Take. 'The man won the Heisman. He won a national championship. They went undefeated. He won the Maxwell Award, the Heisman Trophy, the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. He was absolutely sensational (at Auburn). What he did for the Auburn Tigers, you can't say enough (about it). So he deserves it.' Newton played a major role in Auburn winning the 2010 BCS National Championship by passing for 2,854 yards, rushing for 1,473 yards, and scoring 51 touchdowns. He is also the second quarterback in NCAA history to pass for 20 touchdowns and rush for 20 touchdowns, joining Tim Tebow from Florida, who was the first to accomplish the feat in 2007. After learning of the program's plan to retire his jersey, Newton reminisced about his magical 2010 season and spoke on the honor of joining Pat Sullivan, Terry Beasley, and Bo Jackson by having his number officially retired. 'The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired alongside legends like Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, and Terry Beasley is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!" Newton said in a press release. Newton's jersey will officially be retired on Saturday, Oct. 11, when the Tigers host Georgia at Jordan-Hare Stadium. 5-star RB, former Georgia commit picks Texas football

Five-star running back recruit Derrek Cooper committed to the Texas Longhorns over the Georgia Bulldogs, Miami Hurricanes, Ohio State Buckeyes and Florida State Seminoles. Cooper's commitment represents Texas' third major recruiting win over Georgia in the past week. The Longhorns also beat the Bulldogs for five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson and flipped five-star Georgia defensive line commitment James Johnson. ESPN ranks Cooper as the No. 7 recruit in the nation, No. 1 among running backs and No. 2 among Florida prospects in the class of 2026. Cooper plays high school football for Chaminade Madonna in Hollywood, Florida, which is the same high school as Ohio State superstar receiver Jeremiah Smith. That connection was not enough to help the Buckeyes land the elite running back. Cooper also strongly considered Miami, but is instead the latest player to commit to the Longhorns in Texas' recent recruiting surge. Cooper was committed to Georgia briefly in June 2024. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound running back is Texas' 21st commitment in the class of 2026. The Longhorns have the No. 5 recruiting class in the nation and the third-best in the SEC behind Texas A&M and Georgia. Speaking of Georgia, the Bulldogs still have 30 commitments in the class of 2026. Georgia's recruiting class is ranked second in the country and best in the SEC. Georgia has just one commitment at running back, four-star Colquitt County standout Jae Lamar. The Dawgs may still be looking to sign another class of 2026 running back. Oklahoma Sooners included in preseason AP Top 25 for 26th consecutive season

The Oklahoma Sooners were snubbed in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll released last week, but find themselves in a prominent position in the preseason AP Top 25 released on Monday. The Sooners landed at No. 18 in the nation, the seventh-highest rated team in the preseason poll. It's the 26th consecutive season that the Sooners have been ranked inside the top 25, and it is the second-longest streak in the nation behind the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Texas Longhorns are the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation heading into the season after they were voted No. 1 in the coaches poll as well. Penn State earned the No. 2 spot in front of Big Ten rival and defending national champion Ohio State, which was voted the No. 2 team in the US LBM Coaches Poll. Rounding out the top five are the No. 4 Clemson Tigers, the prohibitive favorite in the ACC, and the back-to-back defending SEC champion Georgia Bulldogs at No. 5. The Sooners will play five teams ranked in front of them in the preseason AP Top 25. No. 1 Texas, No. 8 Alabama, No. 9 LSU, No. 13 South Carolina, and No. 14 Michigan. Oklahoma also faces top 25 teams, No. 21 Ole Miss and No. 24 Tennessee. Oklahoma comes into the season with something to prove after finishing 6-7 in 2024 with an offense that ranked No. 97 in the nation. But Brent Venables and general manager Jim Nagy have rebuilt the offensive side of the ball for new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle. Led by transfer portal additions, quarterback John Mateer and running back Jaydn Ott, the Sooners have a chance to completely rewrite the narrative surrounding the program in 2025. Here's a look at the full preseason AP Top 25 for the 2025 Season.
