Girma returns, LaBonta makes historic debut in U.S. women's 3-0 win over China
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Naomi Girma returned to the national team and Lo'eau LaBonta became the oldest player to make her international debut for the U.S. in a 3-0 win over China on Saturday.
Catarina Macario, Sam Coffey and Lindsey Heaps scored while goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce got her second shutout in as many appearances.
LaBonta, the 32-year-old midfielder for the Kansas City Current in the National Women's Soccer League, came on as a second-half substitute.
The match also marked Girma's first appearance for the national team this year. The 24-year-old defender has been nursing injuries but recently returned to help Chelsea win the Women's Super League title and the FA Cup.
Girma commanded a record $1.1 transfer fee when she moved from the San Diego Wave to Chelsea earlier this year.
Tullis-Joyce, who plays for Manchester United, started in goal in just her second U.S. appearance as coach Emma Hayes looks to replace goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, who retired from the national team last year.
Macario scored her 11th international goal after Alyssa Thompson kept the ball alive in a tumble in front of the net in the 28th minute.
Coffey made it 2-0 in the 35th minute, taking a pass from Macario out front and banging her second goal for the U.S. past goalkeeper Pan Hongyan with her left foot.
Heaps, the U.S. captain, scored on a header in the 54th minute.
The United States is currently missing several key contributors from last year's Olympic gold medal-winning squad. Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson are both on maternity leave. Trinity Rodman is dealing with a nagging back issue.
The United States famously defeated China on penalties in the 1999 Women's World Cup final. The teams last met in 2023, with the Americans winning both games.

Neymar did not have a problem with the second yellow but complained about the first one, which came for a foul late in the first half. 'The second yellow card has to be shown, but the referee has to be kidding about the first one,' he said. 'It's one foul and I'm already being shown a yellow.' African Champions League title stays in Egypt after Pyramids beats Mamelodi Sundowns
CAIRO (AP) — The African Champions League soccer title stayed in Egypt with Pyramids winning the final Sunday just seven years after the club was renamed and moved to Cairo. The president of African soccer's governing body Patrice Motsepe presented the trophy after watching the South African club he owns, Mamelodi Sundowns, lose the second leg in Cairo 2-1, giving Pyramids a 3-2 aggregate win. Pyramids took a first-half lead with Congo forward Fiston Mayele's competition-best ninth goal. Defender Ahmed Samy added a second in the 56th minute for the team coached by Krunoslav Jurčić from Croatia. Iqraam Rayners cut the lead in the 75th and Pyramids survived pressure during 10 minutes of stoppage time added. Egypt now has a record 19 African club titles by four different teams. 79 detained as more violence disrupts PSG's Champions League celebrations
PARIS (AP) — French authorities detained an additional 79 people as violence continued to disrupt PSG's celebrations of its historic Champions League title, the Paris police chief said on Monday. After more than 100,000 people welcomed the return of PSG players to the French capital following their 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the Champions League final on Saturday, a second night of scattered incidents ensued. Laurent Nunez, the Paris police prefect, told RTL radio that groups of individuals gathered close to PSG stadium and on the Champs-Elysees avenue after midnight, causing trouble. Nunez said some using barriers blocked the main ring road surrounding Paris for a while, and that other troublemakers set off fireworks and tried to vandalize shops. Nunez said calm was restored at 3:30 a.m. on Monday. PSG had earlier put on an open-top bus parade in the city for its fans. The winners of European club soccer's biggest prize arrived in Paris on Sunday afternoon and headed to France's most famous avenue, the Champs-Élysées, which overnight Saturday saw acts of violence and clashes with riot police. Police had made more than 500 arrests across France on Saturday night. 'The overall number of arrests is very high, it is completely unprecedented,' Nunez said.
