Sarawak Assembly sitting adjourns sine die; six bills passed
KUCHING: The 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting adjourned sine die today, after eight days of proceedings since May 19, during which six bills were passed with an overwhelming majority.
The State Assembly Speaker, Tan Sri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, announced the adjournment, after a motion to adjourn was tabled by Sarawak Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Law, Malaysia Agreement 1963, and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.
The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (Amendment) Bill 2025, the first bill passed by the assembly, seeks to broaden the Centre's powers by enabling it to commercialise intellectual property, apply for external funding, and form subsidiary companies to bring research outputs to market.
This was followed by the Land Code (Amendment) Bill 2025, which, among other provisions, establishes a formal mechanism for the registration of waqf, or religious endowment lands, in the Sarawak land registry.
Other bills passed included the Infrastructure Development Trust Fund (Dissolution) Bill, the Local Authorities (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Supplementary Supply (2024) Bill approving an additional allocation of RM153,769,197, and the Supplementary Supply (2025) Bill for RM237,660,520.

KUCHING (May 30): The Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak has called on the state government to provide a detailed breakdown of the RM100 million allocated for air charter services under the Supplementary Supply (2025) Bill. Dapsy Sarawak treasurer Wong King Yii said the state administration must justify how such a substantial expenditure serves the public interest. 'The Sarawak government must also commit to transparency and public accountability in all supplementary spending,' he said in a statement. Wong described the RM100 million allocation as 'troubling,' citing both the sheer amount involved and the reality that many of Sarawak's basic infrastructure needs remain unaddressed. He pointed out that rural communities continue to suffer from poor road conditions, unreliable utilities, and limited access to public services, while local councils struggle to maintain facilities or respond to long-standing complaints. 'And yet, RM100 million is suddenly available — for air charters?' Wong added that Sarawakians deserve to know what kind of 'increased activities' warrant such a large budget and who stands to benefit from it. He insisted that this is not about political posturing but fairness and responsible spending. 'The government cannot, on one hand, claim poverty when maintaining roads or supporting rural communities, and on the other hand approve high-cost, vague allocations without proper explanation,' he said. Wong emphasised that Sarawakians are not demanding luxuries but expect basic necessities like functioning roads, clean water, and reliable public services. Until those fundamental needs are addressed, he said, every sen spent elsewhere must be thoroughly scrutinised and publicly explained. 'We do not oppose the Sarawak government's efforts to bring in foreign investments and promote economic development, but the premise must be that all allocations are transparent and ensure every sen of public money is spent where it is truly needed – not on high-cost expenditures lacking clear explanations,' he added.

Speaking at the state-level Kaamatan Festival in Penampang, Anwar said he has no objection to Sabah receiving a greater share of oil and gas income, as long as discussions are structured and responsible. 'We did it with Sarawak—why not Sabah? I have no problem,' he said, suggesting that the same federal-state negotiation model could be applied. He emphasised that national, federal, state, and Petronas interests must all be protected. Anwar also criticised politicising the issue, saying progress comes from negotiation, not street-level rhetoric. Addressing Sabah's long-standing frustrations, he acknowledged persistent issues like electricity, clean water, education, healthcare, roads, and poverty. While recognising valid concerns, he urged appreciation of recent development efforts. Sabah currently receives 5pc in petroleum cash payments a deal local leaders have long considered unfair. The state is pushing for a better arrangement under the Malaysia Agreement 1963. Federal-Sabah ties must be close, built on mutual trust – PM Anwar KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for stronger ties between the federal government and Sabah, grounded in mutual trust and aimed at advancing the state's development and protecting the welfare of its people. Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, said Sabah should follow Sarawak's example, where closer federal-state cooperation has shown tangible benefits. 'The federal government has long prioritised Sabah's needs. This isn't about state elections, it's about responsibility,' he told reporters after meeting Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders on Thursday night. Anwar said the Federal government has proven its commitment to defending Sabah's rights, especially in addressing the issue of the Sulu group's claim, which was successfully repelled and overcome, thus upholding the dignity of the state as part of Malaysia. "We gave our full commitment in the Cabinet meeting, and even in the recent ASEAN summit, we managed to ensure that Sabah's issues are always prioritised," he said. Asked about PH's cooperation strategy in the Sabah State Election (PRN), Anwar, who is also PH Chairman, said that Sabah PH is currently holding discussions with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN). "Let Sabah PH decide; they are negotiating with GRS and negotiating with Sabah BN. These Sabah PH leaders will come forward and coordinate. Right now, it seems that all meetings are progressing, and we don't anticipate any problems," he said.
