Mace-fueled catfight erupts in Uber after TV presenter asked Atlanta driver to roll up windows in 90F heat
A sports reporter claims she was violently assaulted and pepper-sprayed after asking her Uber driver to roll up the car windows during 90-degree heat.
Tabitha Turner, an Atlanta based NBA and WNBA presenter, was travelling in the back of Mericole Smith's vehicle Saturday afternoon when the mace-fueled fight broke out.
She asked Smith to roll up the windows and turn on the air conditioning, but the driver refused and demanded she exit the vehicle on the side of the highway, Turner claims.
Video captured by the reporter shows how she pleaded with Smith, saying she 'just wanted a cool Uber', as the driver repeatedly said 'get out'.
Smith said she always kept the windows of her car open so passengers who felt sick could vomit out of them instead of soiling her upholstery.
'Call the cops or refund my money,' the reporter told the visibly annoyed driver.
The argument quickly became heated with Turner explaining how she 'requested a cool Uber' in the app.
'Get the f*** out of the car,' Smith yelled back, before she reached into the backseat and physically attacking Turner. 'What the f*** is wrong with you? You got no right.'
Smith, who also allegedly deployed mace as she punched Turner in the face, has been charged with battery - but maintains Turner was the aggressor in the situation.
Smith was driving northbound on I-85, after having picked Turner up from the Atlanta airport, when the argument first erupted 4pm Saturday.
They were on the curve of an exit ramp, which police say is a 'dangerous place to load and unload passengers', when Smith ordered Turner out of the car.
The reporter said she would get out once the ride was refunded, at which point Smith pepper sprayed and punched her, according to a police report obtained by WANF.
Turner tried to deploy her own mace and started scratching Smith in self-defense, the report states.
Smith allegedly tried to physically pull her out of the vehicle and the pair struggled on the side of the road.
A passerby witnessed the scene and stopped to help. Police arrived shortly thereafter.
Smith, who says she was 'covered in blood', was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The driver took to TikTok later that night to share her side of the story.
Smith claimed she was 15 minutes away from Turner's requested drop-off destination when the reporter told her 'it's hot in here'.
The driver claims 'I turned the A/C up, no questions asked', but Turner continued to complain.
She says she explained that she keeps the windows 'cracked' in case her passengers get car sick, but Turner was not satisfied by her response.
Smith further alleges Turner began to scream at her about how she was 'sweating' and had 'requested a comfort car' - a more upscale type of rideshare - but wasn't receiving that comfort-tier level service.
The driver claims she told Turner she would 'take you back to where I picked you up from' and she could then request a new ride - but that 'was not good enough for her'.
'She is going off. She is irate in the backseat - trippin!' Smith told her followers, explaining that she then pulled over and told Turner to 'get out right here'.
Smith claims this is when Turner demanded a refund, as seen in the now-viral video that the reporter had shared on her Instagram page.
The driver alleges she informed her passenger that Uber would issue the refund and reiterated once again that she needed to get out of the car.
'In what world is it acceptable to sit in a stranger's car and then try to insinuate that you feel threatened after refusing to leave what you are perceiving as a a threat?' she asked her followers.
Smith claims she flagged down another driver, asked them to call 911 and then opened the driver's side passenger door.
'She said 'b**** you think you're going to touch me?',' Smith recalled. 'No, but I actually want you to get out of the car. Can you please get out of the car? You're escalating this s*** for no reason.'
She says that's when Turner 'goes into her bag to get a weapon', prompting her to get back inside the vehicle and sit in the driver's seat.
Turner then continued to threaten her, Smith claims, so 'I proceeded to grab my mace and I maced the f*** out of her in self-defense.'
She then revealed her bruised face and swollen left eye, which was originally hidden from view, to the camera, claiming that Turner 'tried to gouge my eye out'.
Turner claims the allegations in Smith's video are not true and have caused her to receive violent threats.
'This is so hurtful that this is happening,' she said told press conference Wednesday, during which she was accompanied by her attorney.
Turner explained she wanted a 'cool ride', like she had requested in the app, and that she did not exit the vehicle because she felt unsafe doing so in traffic.
'People questioning my character because of what she's saying,' she told WSB, noting the backlash from the incident has impacted her career opportunities.
'I just wanted to go home after work and see my daughter,' she added.
Smith, however, says that she is being 'punished' even though she was 'the one that has to go to the hospital'.
'See the bruises on my body?' she told reporters. 'I have to relive this over and over and over again.'
A warrant for Smith's arrest was issued Wednesday. Smith confirmed to WSB that she would turn herself in on battery charges.
It is unclear as of Thursday if she has yet done so.
Daily Mail has approached police and Turner's attorney for comment.
Uber, in a statement, said: 'Safety is fundamental to the Uber experience, and conduct like this is not tolerated.
'We've taken action in response to this disturbing incident, including removing the driver from the Uber platform, and will support law enforcement however we can.'

Donald Trump's royal obsession: Diana said he 'gave her the creeps'
Donald Trump once described Princess Diana as his 'dream lady' and 'a genuine princess', even lamenting in his 1997 book that he never had the chance to court her. But while Trump saw her as the ultimate trophy wife, Diana reportedly felt alarmed by his advances - telling a friend he 'gave her the creeps' as bouquets of flowers flooded her Kensington Palace home. Once their divorce was finalised in 1990, Trump continued his relationship with Maples and the pair had a daughter, Tiffany, together in 1993 before marrying later the same year. As his second divorce played out in court, Trump met the Slovenian-American model Melania Knauss at a party in New York City in 1998. He would propose to Melania at the Met Gala in 2004 and marry her in a seaside church in Palm Beach, Florida in 2005, making her both his third wife and the future First Lady of America. And let's not forget Stormy Daniels , the adult film actress who claimed she had a one-night stand with the businessman in 2006. Trump was later found guilty of 34 felony counts stemming from a $130,000 hush money payment he made to Daniels in the run up to the 2016 Presidential Elections. But Trump himself has admitted to only having 'one regret in the women department'. Writing in his 1997 book The Art of the Comeback, he said: 'I never had the opportunity to court Lady Diana Spencer. 'I met her on a number of occasions,' he continued. 'I couldn't help but notice how she moved people. She lit up the room with her charm, her presence. She was a genuine princess – a dream lady.' It has been reported that Trump attempted to pursue Diana as his 'ultimate trophy wife' after her highly-publicised divorce from Prince Charles in 1996. In a Sunday Times column, former BBC journalist and friend of Diana, Selina Scott recalled huge bouquets of flowers arriving at her Kensington Palace home. This was the same tactic he used when wooing first wife Ivana. 'Trump clearly saw Diana as the ultimate trophy wife,' Scott wrote. 'As the roses and orchids piled up at her apartment she became increasingly concerned about what she should do. 'It had begun to feel as if Trump was stalking her.' Although Trump only met Diana a handful of times, the businessman found it hard to move on after she passed away. In a 1997 radio interview with Howard Stern a few months after Diana's funeral, Trump said he would have 'nailed' her - but suggested he would have had her tested for HIV first. 'Why do people think it's egotistical of you to say you could've gotten with Lady Di?' Stern asked his guest. 'You could've gotten her, right? You could've nailed her?' 'I think I could have,' Trump replied. The two men then acted out a hypothetical scenario in which Trump demanded Diana get tested before they have sex. 'Hey Lady Di, would you go to the doctor?' Stern joked, People Magazine reported. 'Go back over to my Lexus, because I have a new doctor,' Trump added, as if addressing the late princess. 'We wanna give you a little check-up.' In another interview with Stern in 2000, Trump doubled down on his claim that he would have slept with Diana 'without even hesitation'. Discussing his top ten hottest women on the radio show, Trump placed Diana third but only after putting his ex-wife Ivana in second place and Melania in the gold-medal position. Remembering the People's Princess, Trump described her as 'crazy' but said that was just a 'minor detail'. 'I tell you what, I think she's magnificent,' Trump told Stern. 'Lady Di was truly a woman with great beauty. 'I've seen her a couple of times. She was really beautiful, and people didn't realise she was that beautiful. She was supermodel beautiful. 'She had the height, she had the beauty, she had the skin, the whole thing.' His comments toward Diana make it all the more impressive that Prince William managed to observe decorum on meeting the American president during his state visit in 2019, at the re-opening of Notre Dame de Paris in December 2024 and yet again at the funeral of Pope Francis in April 2025. His comments toward Diana make it all the more impressive that Prince William managed to observe decorum on meeting the American president during his state visit in 2019, at the re-opening of Notre Dame de Paris in December 2024 and yet again at the funeral of Pope Francis in April 2025. But perhaps the prince always knew what his late mother truly thought of Trump, as previously revealed by Earl Charles Spencer. In 2023, Trump was gearing up to release a new book which he said featured letters from world leaders, politicians, and celebrities - including Princess Diana - who all wanted to 'kiss his a**'. In a cut-throat response, Earl Spencer tweeted: 'Surprised to hear that Donald Trump is apparently claiming that my late sister Diana wanted to "kiss his a***", since the one time she mentioned him to me – when he was using her good name to sell some real estate in New York – she clearly viewed him as worse than an anal fissure.' Trump has been invited to the UK on an 'unprecedented' second state visit which is expected to take place at Windsor Castle in September this year.

Woman in her 50s dies after being 'attacked by BMW driver who flipped his car' - as man, 23, is arrested on suspicion of murder
A woman in her 50s has died after she was allegedly assaulted in the street by a BMW driver who had just flipped his car in a horror crash. Emergency services were called to Aylestone Road, near Leicester city centre, at around 5.30pm on Tuesday after a white BMW 1 Series overturned. Moments later, witnesses reported the driver fleeing the wreckage and running down the middle of the road towards Leicester Royal Infirmary – before launching a brutal assault on a female pedestrian. The victim, a woman in her 50s who has not yet been named, was rushed to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham with life-threatening injuries, but tragically, police confirmed she died on Thursday afternoon. The 23-year-old male driver was arrested at the scene. He was initially held on suspicion of attempted murder, possession with intent to supply class B drugs, assaulting an emergency worker, dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drugs, and failing to provide a specimen. Following the woman's death, he has now been re-arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody after detectives were granted a warrant for further detention. In a statement, Detective Inspector Emma Matts, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Murder Investigation Team, said: 'This woman was sadly subjected to a serious assault and was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries. 'Her family and close friends have remained at her bedside and tragically she died this afternoon. 'Since the incident, a dedicated team of detectives have worked tirelessly pursuing all lines of enquiry to establish the full circumstances around what happened. Those enquiries will very much continue as we now move the incident to a murder investigation. 'I would like to thank those members of the public who have contacted with information about what they saw but I would also still like to appeal to anyone who saw anything connected to this incident or filmed any footage - whether that was of the vehicle being driven beforehand through the city centre, the collision itself or the assault – and hasn't spoken to officers to please get in touch.' 'Again, if you were driving a vehicle which has a dash cam, please check your vehicle to see if it has captured anything of use to the investigation. 'What you know could still be a crucial piece of information so please do not hesitate to pass that on.'
