'I live in Spanish holiday hotspot and tourists should be wary of one thing'
The Spanish island of Majorca in particular regularly attracts vast numbers of visitors from Britain and Germany, but locals are bearing the brunt of mass tourism as many find themselves priced out of their properties in favour of more lucrative holiday rentals. Gina Mariavan, a Majorca native who offers guidance to tourists on TikTok, shares her perspectives on various subjects including the overtourism challenges facing the holiday hotspot.
She recently uploaded a clip to the platform showing a very lengthy queue of passengers waiting at a Majorca bus stop, stretching along the entire pavement.
Gina wrote: "Welcome to the Mallorca bus stop! Hunger Games start in 3...2...1..."
The Majorca local made reference to The Hunger Games book and film franchise, where participants battle against one another in a competition until just one survives.
The caption of Gina's TikTok post states: "Public transport in Mallorca can be a great option! However, now during high season, prepare to wait a little!"
Lots of Spanish holidaymakers rely on public transport whilst exploring new destinations as a budget-friendly method to discover areas rather than splashing out on taxis but services can become overcrowded during peak periods such as summer when visitor numbers soar.
This proves frustrating for both residents and tourists as it results in extended wait times and jam-packed buses or trains.
Gina's TikTok footage has racked up 338,500 views, 10,900 likes and more 200 comments at the time of writing.
One viewer commented: "I just came back from Mallorca. Spent [a] few hours in Palma and really people don't know how to behave..
"As a tourist, I'm not surprised that all locals are complaining. Came back to Porto Colom asap. Completely different vibe and people there."
Another contributed: "Living on Mallorca for 2.5 years now and I totally understand why locals hate tourists, they just look to themselves. People live here. People work here."
A third remarked: "Locals cannot get a bus because of mass tourism. It will not end well."
This was backed by a Majorca resident in the comments who added: "Thanks to people like you we can't even go to work, thanks."
Other viewers defended tourism against the criticism. One observed: "For all of you who complain about tourism: you live off of it, and if it's not regulated, it's the city council's fault, not the tourists!"
A second declared: "The locals blaming tourists shows how very little they understand things.
"The lack of buses and infrastructure is your politicians fault for not investing in your local community. Tourism drives your economy."
Responsible Travel reports that tourism makes up 45 per cent of Majorca's economy. Post-pandemic, the island welcomed 14 million visitors, a significant number compared to its resident population of just under one million.

Woman stunned after seeing what she looks like before and after climbing Yr Wyddfa
Life revolves around embarking on adventures, and there's arguably no finer destination to discover than the Welsh mountains. One woman recently discovered that trekking in Wales can be enjoyable, yet packed with unexpected twists, following her recent ascent of Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon), and her tale will probably leave you giggling. Vivien, recognised as on TikTok, recently revealed her appearance before and after tackling the renowned summit in North Wales, with the outcome leaving her rather stunned. It's safe to say her wilderness expedition was extraordinary, and she encountered more than a handful of surprises whilst discovering what our magnificent nation has to offer. Accompanying a segment of the footage, Vivien penned: "Lol, my smile in the beginning to my shocked face at the end." Upon viewing the clip, you witness that Vivien's trek commenced with rather misty conditions, and this wasn't the first reported encounter with such circumstances. Additionally, she mentioned the conditions were extremely blustery and precipitation began to fall. Vivien confessed she almost got lost, before revealing her appearance at the conclusion of her expedition. In essence, she was completely soaked, sporting dripping wet locks and a rather dejected look. This simply demonstrates how rapidly conditions can shift whilst you're outdoors. Across the footage, she also inscribed: "Did someone say climb Snowdon and get lost and almost die in 70mph wind and rain?" She emerged unharmed ultimately, and she treated the circumstances with humour. Nonetheless, it's always crucial to exercise caution when venturing into the great outdoors. It appears that Vivien was not alone during her mountain walk, which is a wise precaution. Yr Wyddfa, located in Snowdonia, holds the title of the highest peak in Wales, standing tall at 1,085 metres above sea level. It also claims the distinction of being the tallest in the British Isles outside of the Scottish Highlands. Designated as a national nature reserve, Snowdon is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Those wishing to visit will find it nestled within the boundaries of Snowdonia National Park. The mountain boasts several lakes, with Llyn Lydaw, situated on its eastern flank, being the largest. Historically, Yr Wyddfa has been referred to as the "busiest mountain in the United Kingdom." In 2022, it was reported that the mountain had been scaled by 543,541 walkers. There are six main routes leading to the summit, with the most frequented one originating from the northern town of Llanberis. Alternatively, visitors can reach the peak via the Snowdon Mountain Railway, which transported 98,567 passengers in 2021. The mountain continues to be a popular destination, attracting thousands of visitors annually. During particularly busy periods, such as summer weekends, queues have been known to form at the summit of Yr Wyddfa as people wait to access the summit pillar. This typically occurs at the steps leading to the trig point; however, it remains possible to enjoy the summit area without joining the queue.
