Scots singer burns wedding dress on Irvine beach in message to domestic abusers

A singer who burned a wedding dress at Irvine beach in an empowering music video has encouraged victims of domestic violence not to suffer in silence.
Kirsty Millard, from Kilmarnock, torched the white frock in November last year while filming her new debut single 'The Patriarchy'.
The song is about women being able to move on with their lives and thrive after domestic abuse.
Kirsty, who is an abuse survivor, said the dress represents patriarchal themes that have " oppressed women for too many generations".
The 37-year-old told the Record: "From a young age, women are taught about the white picket fence dream and that marriage is the goal. For a lot of women who have been in a similar situation as me, that just isn't the reality.
"Burning the wedding dress was like burning that idea and the things associated with marriage.
"I bought the dress from a Cancer Research charity shop and the woman who sold it to me had actually been through domestic abuse herself.
"Its a major issue for so many women. It's important for survivors to know you can be a success after going through it."
Kirsty said that after coming out of an abusive relationship, she felt the need to explore her own personality and life again. She rekindled a love for singing and songwriting.
She said: "I was in an abusive relationship.
"When I came out of it, doing this song was something for myself. I invested in myself again and it felt empowering.
"I want other survivors to feel the same way and know there is life after abuse."
Ten percent of proceeds from the song will go towards Women's Aid Scotland - a charity Kirsty says she holds close to her heart.
She said: "Women's Aid Scotland helped me a lot when I needed it most. They deserve recognition for how they help people.
"I would encourage those going through domestic abuse or violence to try to get out of their situation and prioritise themselves. Sometimes that is easier said than done, but recognising and admitting to yourself that you need help is the first step to take.
"Even if one woman picks up the phone to call Women's Aid, then that is positive for me."

A teacher who was sacked for selling X-rated photos online has blasted education bosses for their 'Victorian values'. The General Teaching Council (GTCS) for Scotland has scheduled a hearing that may ban Kirsty Buchan from the classroom. But the physics teacher has told the education bosses she is too busy to attend – as she is doing a photo-shoot for her OnlyFans site. She said: 'The way I've been treated in the school and the education system has been very one-sided and unfair. 'They have applied Victorian values to behaviour that is socially acceptable in 2025 and written it up as though I am suffering from poor morality. The Daily Record interviewed Kirsty in 2022 after it emerged she was running the saucy sideline and made £60,000 in a month. Pupils at Bannerman High in Baillieston, Glasgow, got wind of the full-frontal content and some parents were furious. But despite accepting a no-show at her GTCS hearing will probably mean being struck off, Kirsty is unrepentant. She said: 'The reality is that I live my life according to proper values. I'm loyal and decent and I treat people properly. And I know I was a very good teacher because I really cared about the kids I taught. 'I'd have loved to have carried on with both but that was taken away from me. They can do what they like at the GTCS but I won't be there.' Kirsty, of Coatbridge, said she was forced to step away from the modelling site after various setbacks, including the loss of a close family member. She added: 'I put a few things to the side to concentrate on being a mum and dealing with family things. But I am now up and running and I have hundreds of fans who are signed to my account and I am back on the modelling beat. It was revealed earlier this week the ex-teacher – who uses the handle Jessica Jackrabbitx on the site – faces a hearing with the GTCS on Monday, where she is charged with three offences. Kirsty, 34, is accused of bringing the profession into disrepute by selling the photos. The GTCS says she failed to ensure they could not be accessed by under-18s without the need to log in to the X-rated subscription service. She is also being carpeted for speaking to the Record, which caused a huge stir at the time, with pupils coming forward to say such modelling should be acceptable in 2025. In the interview, Kirsty told how her wages were docked by the school for time off she took off to look after her son. In her first month – after the Record story – she made £60,000, which is more than a year's wages as a physics teacher. Her employer, Glasgow City Council, referred her case to the GTCS. Kirsty said: 'I've already lost my job but they are determined to drag me through this hearing to ensure I can never teach again. It really just makes me feel sad, to give me a life ban and make out that I'm a bad teacher when opposite is true. 'It's just a lot of backward thinking, Victorian attitude rubbish and it says more about the GTCS and Glasgow City Council than it does about me.' Kirsty added: 'I loved the job and I loved the pupils, many of whom I'm still in touch with. I have also still been able to help a few younger kids out with their maths homework, just as a favour, and that gives me a buzz.' Kirsty believes the GTCS case is vindictive. She said: 'People just need to get over it. What I do is not hurting anyone.' The GTCS claims her actions were 'lacking in integrity', failed to take steps to stop her being identified and risked bringing the profession into disrepute. It is said she is unfit to teach. The GTCS hearing will be online, last up to three days and evidence will be led by lawyers even if Kirsty does not turn up. A panel could issue a reprimand and/or apply conditions to her work. The ultimate sanction would be the removal of her name from the teaching register.

Nowhere else Kirsty Morrison would rather be than at champions Hibs
Kirsty Morrison has signed a two-year contract extension with Hibernian Women and there is nowhere else she would rather be. The 23-year-old has signed on with Hibs until 2027 after winning the first Scottish Women's Premier League title of her career. Morrison played a key role in Hibs push for the title, scoring four goals in 23 appearances – including a crucial last-minute winner against Glasgow City in the first post-split game of the campaign, as well as starting at Ibrox on the final day. A Hibs Girls Academy graduate, Morrison has been with Hibernian for over a decade and was awarded her senior debut versus Spartans in February 2019 by Grant Scott. The forward showed her class at a young age, netting her first goals for the Club in a convincing win over Forfar Farmington just two months after making her debut. In her first season in senior football, she started the SWPL Cup Final in May 2019 and played 95 minutes as Hibs defeated Glasgow City on penalties in Airdrie to earn her first winners' medal of her career. She now has 136 appearances for the Club and is excited to continue her career in Leith: 'I'm really happy to extend my stay at the club, I've been at the club a long time now and there's nowhere else I'd rather be. 'I'm really excited for what the future holds. After having such a successful season we have a great opportunity to build on that. We also have the opportunity to play in the Champions League which will be a special experience.' On Kirsty's new deal, Hibs Women head coach Grant Scott commented: 'I'm delighted that Kirsty has committed her future to the club. Gerard Butler honours late 'beloved mother' in emotional film premiere tribute
Gerard Butler shared an emotional tribute to his late mother, Margaret, during the Brazilian premiere of his latest Hollywood blockbuster. Hollywood film star Gerard Butler has paid tribute to his late mum who passed away earlier this year. The Scots actor attended the Brazilian premiere of the How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake earlier this week. The 55-year-old is reprising his role as Stoick, the Viking leader in the upcoming movie. At the end of the screening, Butler's mother, Margaret Coll - who died at the age of 81, earlier this year - was honoured in a touching moment of remembrance. The actor shared pictures from the film premiere on social media, including a snap which read: "Dedicated to the loving memory of Margaret Coll." He captioned the post, on Instagram: "Getting weird. Funny face. The boys. And in memory of my dearly beloved mother Margaret Coll." Fans were quick to take to the comments on Butler's Instagram post, sending their condolences to the star following the sad news. One comment said: "She'll always be by your side, supporting you and loving you more than anyone else. And yes, she was definitely there with you, smiling, and making those funny faces." As another wrote: "Awe. So extremely sorry for the loss of your mama, Gerard. I remember seeing you mention a few months back that she was in the hospital." Butler frequently left his home in Hollywood and visited his mum, in the village of Comrie in Perthshire - where she lived for more than 20 years. He previously told the Record about his visits back to Scotland to visit his mum. He said: "I sit in the garden, I look up at the mountain ranges and I am just taken aback constantly by how beautiful it is there, and what a great land I come from." 'I just really connect when I get back, and I find that I recharge and knock out all the bull that's going round in my head, all of that Hollywood nonsense." 'I quickly get that slapped out of me," he joked. 'When mum's like, 'can you go in and wash the dishes?' I'm always saying, 'Mum, look, I'm a Hollywood star, I don't do that!' And she's like, 'Whatever, get in and wash the dishes'," he recalled. Butler's mother Margaret died peacefully surrounded by her family in February this year, her funeral notice described her as the "beloved wife of Alex" and a "dearly loved and sadly missed mother, grandmother, sister and friend." Her funeral was held in Perth and donations were accepted for the charity Mary's Meals, which was held closely in her heart, as well as Butler working with the charity for many years.
