BMW's Neue Klasse concept previewed a bold new direction for its future cabins
After decades of ubiquitous grey, black and cream interiors, car makers are finally experimenting with more adventurous combinations of colours and materials.
The new Fiat Grande Panda pairs a blue dashboard and seat upholstery with yellow mood lighting; Mini is stitching bold, brightly coloured patterns into the Aceman's dashboard and door linings; and Volvo is using recycled plastic from discarded PVC windows for some of its interior materials paired with recycled fishing nets for floor mats in its EX30.
As we usher in, at long last, an era of more adventurous and innovative and uplifting cabin design, here are the developments and trends that will shape your next car's cockpit.
Tesla popularised the trend for dark and light contrasts, but the interior of the Lexus LF-ZL SUV concept shows us what's possible when designers go to town on pairing opposites.
As well as coupling grey, light brown and off-white, Lexus has combined materials with very different textures, including ribbed door panels and shag carpet.
This is a step too far for widespread application, but more daring use of contrasting colours and materials is coming imminently.
Genesis went all in on gothic tones for its Neolun SUV concept, but the trend for dark purple is expected to translate in more subtle ways to more mainstream vehicles over the next year or so.
The colour of 2024, Apricot Crush (according to trend analysis firm WGSN), has been used liberally in the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X concept's cabin (above).
Urangoo Samba, head of colour at WGSN, says the tone 'speaks to today's consumers who seek light and positivity'. Similar warm colours are set to make their way to production this year on details such as seatbelts, cubbyholes and mood lighting, as previewed inside the Skoda Epiq concept.
Audi's Activesphere concept's upholstery and door fabric transition seamlessly from black to red, creating a moody, high-end atmosphere.
Such tonal gradients are on the verge of going mainstream, having been spotted in Nissan's 2023 Hyper Adventure concept and the new Mini Countryman.
The decision to focus on either contrasts or seamless transitions could become an important differentiating factor between brands in the future.
3D printing has made production of intricately detailed objects and more customisation commercially viable. Renault, for example, is using it on a range of colourful storage bins in its new 5 E-Tech.
With owners looking to stamp their personality onto their cars, increased customisation of interior details is becoming a hot trend.
Car makers are experimenting with smart surfaces to create simpler, less cluttered environments. Smart materials appear plain but contain hidden technology that comes alive when desired.
The BMW i Vision Dee concept's woven dash doubles as a control panel and projects infotainment onto the windscreen. Smart surfaces are likely to be commonplace inside high-end interiors by the end of the decade, transforming them into boutique spaces for work or relaxation.

Porsche Leads At Halfway, Ferraris Struggle at Le Mans

Six hours into the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans, Ferrari's battalion of 499 P racers seemed to be in complete control. In the six hours of night running since, the brand's three entries have all found small misfortunes that have re-opened the door to competitors from Porsche, BMW, Cadillac, and Toyota. Two Ferraris, the red cars numbered 50 and 51 run as part of the factory Ferrari AF Corse program, have been forced down the pit lane for penalties. One was forced to take a drive-through penalty for a procedural violation, while the other was given a five second stop-and-hold for contact with a lower-class car. The third, the No. 83 officially siloed off as a private car by AF Corse but effectively serving as an additional entry for the factory program, suffered from a brief run off the track from what was at the time the race lead. The leading Porsche has suffered a misfortune of its own, though. Porsche's leading car was in the middle of what was still a strong battalion of Ferraris at the front of the field when the entry was forced to stop in the middle of a fuel run. This ended what had been a major advantage for the team's No. 6 entry, which was slightly slower than the Ferraris on pace but had regularly run an extra lap on fuel before pitting and had gradually drawn closer to skipping a stop made by the Ferrari without sacrificing significant pace on track. With half the race left to run, twelve cars remain on the lead lap. That group includes all three Ferraris, the three factory Penske-run Porsche entries, two WRT-entered BMW M Hybrid V8s, two factory Toyotas, and the two Hertz Team Jota Cadillacs that started on the front row half a day ago. Ferrari and Porsche seem to have the strongest pace in clean running, and Ferrari's early advantage suggests that the Italian brand may be in a very strong position to repeat its victories in the last two races here, but all five marques can be seen as contenders to win the race. In LMP2, VDS Panis Racing leads what has largely been an unusually clean race for the generally very busy privateer prototype category. Manthey's 1st Phorm-branded Porsche 911 GT3 R leads the pro-am LM GT3 category, the only GT class still running under the current Le Mans rule set. One car in the Hypercar class, the No. 311 Cadillac of Action Express Racing, has retired. That car first went behind the wall with a power steering issue after sunset. Is The BMW M2 Still the Best M Car? Video Review

There's a lot to be said for a do-everything car. A one-car solution. Scores of enthusiasts all want their daily driver to also be a track car, and a drift car, and a grocery getter, and a road tripper. Very few cars can actually fulfill this mandate, but one gets very close: The updated 473-horsepower 2025 BMW M2. It's the enthusiast darling. Uncorrupted by hybridity and all-wheel drive, the M2 is the simplest, most barebones, and cheapest M car you can buy. And I wanted to see if it was the true one-car enthusiast solution, so I reviewed a manual one for our newest video on the Motor1 YouTube channel. For 2025, the M2 got some updates , most notably a 20-horsepower bump, optional silver wheels, and nine new colors. The interior is now unified with the M3, which has new air vents and ambient lighting, and you get the excellent iDrive 8.5. Otherwise, it is business as usual inside the M2, which is it say it feels like an M3 . At the time of filming, the 2025 M2's base price was $66,375, but the tariffs have bumped that price to $69,375. Still, it's almost $10,000 cheaper than an M3 with identical hardware, making it a relative bargain. As far as how it drives and what it's like to live with, you'll just have to watch our video. It's an incredible performance bargain. But is it the perfect one-car solution? Acura ADX Cargo Test: How Big Is the Trunk?

So all the bags fit, but it sure wasn't pretty. Nor was it easy to do, with the Big Blue bag awkwardly placed diagonally in the back, the Green Bag plopped on top at its own weight angle and the Fancy Bag just barely fitting. It took a lot of tries to get here, and again, the reason is that angled opening. Actually, let me amend that last sentence: It took me a lot of tries to get there in the HR-V, because after two attempts in the ADX, I gave up and looked back to see what nonsense I eventually came up with in the Honda. Now, while the HR-V's result underwhelmed for its segment, that's not the case when lining up the ADX's identical result in its luxury segment. As always, it's a matter of perspective. This result is better than the rather lame Audi Q3, which has an even worse liftgate angle. Utilizing the Volvo XC40's underfloor storage area allows it to match this result with all the bags loaded. The BMW X1 with its available spare tire also matches this result, but its cargo area is much boxier and far easier to load as a result. (Without a spare tire, the X1 would be superior.) The Mercedes GLA accepted all the bags and had room left over and is therefore higher on the leaderboard. The Mercedes GLB, meanwhile, is by far the segment champion thanks to its ultra-boxy cargo area. So, the ADX's capacity is OK for the segment, but its shape makes for difficult loading. It's also the same as the HR-V, but again, that's not surprising. Now, for some odds and ends.
