Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts, a Nashville John Overton High School graduate, has left Tokyo and will miss his team's two-game series there against the Chicago Cubs because of an undisclosed illness.
Betts has lost 15 pounds, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
Betts, an eight-time All-Star, returned to Los Angeles early Monday morning to continue recovering ahead of his team's domestic season opener March 27.
'Mookie flew home early evening, late afternoon yesterday and arrived safely,' Roberts told reporters in Tokyo. 'It just made the most sense for him to get back to a regular routine. That's kind of where we're at and we all support it.'
The Dodgers are Cubs are set to begin to the 2025 MLB season at the Tokyo Dome on Tuesday, followed by another game Wednesday.
Betts, who won the 2018 American League MVP Award while he was with the Boston Red Sox, made the trip to Japan despite feeling ill before the team left. He quickly tired Sunday during a workout before the decision was made to send him back to Los Angeles.
Betts helped Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers win the World Series last year, his third championship overall and second with Los Angeles.
Betts also is a six-time Gold Glove winner and seven-time Silver Slugger Award winner.

Royals Announce Unfortunate News Before Yankees Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kansas City Royals have had a rough few days. Not only did they lose their previous series to the last-place Chicago White Sox, but they also lost 10-2 to the New York Yankees on Tuesday, Advertisement Starting pitcher Noah Cameron (2-2, 2.17 ERA) allowed six runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings, while Yankees southpaw Max Fried allowed just two runs on six hits in seven innings. New York superstar Aaron Judge and Austin Wells each hit homers off Cameron, and the two hitters combined for eight RBI in the contest. On top of that, the Royals announced a pitching injury before Wednesday's game against the Yankees, via their social media. Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Cole Ragans (55).Peter Aiken-Imagn Images Southpaw Cole Ragans (2-3, 5.18 ERA) was placed on the 15-day IL with a left rotator cuff strain. The club also DFA'd right-hander Trevor Richards (12.00 ERA), reinstated right-hander Lucas Erceg (1-1, 1.96 ERA) from the IL, and recalled right-hander Jonathan Bowlan (1-1, 4.09 ERA) from Triple-A Omaha. Yankees' Marcus Stroman walks back starter-only stance: ‘Open to anything'

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — New York Yankees starting pitcher Marcus Stroman has changed his mind about reconsidering his role with the club. The right-hander said he would be open to pitching out of the bullpen when he returns from the injured list after declaring that he wouldn't do it just a few months ago. Advertisement 'I'm open to anything,' he said after making his first rehab start at Double-A Somerset on Wednesday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark. With the Yankees in Kansas City, Stroman threw 3 1/3 innings, striking out four, walking two and giving up one hit and one earned run. He threw 46 pitches and touched 89 mph several times with his sinker, though he appeared to throw all of his pitches. Stroman has been on the IL with left knee inflammation since April 12. He said the problem is the ACL that he tore in college. 'There's a bunch of a little mess going on there,' he said. 'I don't really even like to talk about it at this point. It just is what it is. It's 10 years removed on an ACL.' Stroman added that he had a cortisone shot and a nerve blocker. 'It was something that I was feeling walking around,' he said. Nice ovation for Marcus Stroman, who went 3 1/3 innings, striking out four with two walks, a hit and one earned run. Threw 46 pitches. Touched 89 mph a bunch with the sinker. — Brendan Kuty 🧟‍♂️ (@BrendanKutyNJ) June 11, 2025 Stroman said he had been dealing with a 'crazy deep throb' and 'ache' in his knee, which has improved of late. He said he expected to feel soreness Thursday morning, but that he's learning to deal with it, and that he expects to make another rehab start next week. 'Way more confident position with my knee now than I was,' he said. It's unclear what kind of role the Yankees may have for Stroman when he returns. They have a full five-man rotation with Ryan Yarbrough lately emerging as a viable fifth starter after they moved on from veteran Carlos Carrasco. Righty Luis Gil, who played catch at Somerset on Wednesday, is also working his way back from the injured list and could return sometime around the All-Star break. Gil won the American League Rookie of the Year last year. Advertisement In spring training, there also didn't appear to be a spot in the rotation for Stroman, but then ace Gerrit Cole had Tommy John surgery, Gil strained his lat and Clarke Schmidt had right rotator cuff tendonitis. Stroman wound up making three starts before going on the IL, posting an 0-1 record with an 11.57 ERA. Stroman said he hasn't spoken with the Yankees about his expected role yet. 'Just very open to whatever it may be,' he said. Stroman had financial motivation to remain a starting pitcher going into the season. His $17-million option for 2026 would have kicked in if he pitched 140 innings this year. It's now virtually impossible for him to reach that mark this season. In February, he shot down talk of him potentially going into a relief role. 'I'm a starter,' he said at the time. 'I won't pitch in the bullpen.' Now, things have changed. 'I think everybody who has been a starter would want to be a starter,' he said. 'I think that's just natural at this point. I don't think anybody who has had a career like I've had starting would just voluntarily say … you know. But obviously we have an incredible team, you don't know how the season's going to play out. There's always a bunch of things that happen. So, yeah, I'm looking to get back to 100 percent, which I feel pretty close (to). Build my pitch count and take it from there.'

MLB Makes Historic Andrew McCutchen Announcement on Wednesday

MLB Makes Historic Andrew McCutchen Announcement on Wednesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Throughout his 17-year career, outfielder Andrew McCutchen has proven to be a special player, earning five All-Star appearances, four Silver Slugger awards, one Gold Glove and the 2013 National League MVP award. Advertisement Of course, he is mostly known for his two stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, spanning from 2009 to 2017 and 2023 to 2025, where he has established himself as one of the most well-known players in franchise history. Now, after all these years, he continues to etch himself into the team's history, and during the Pirates' game against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday, he hit his 241st home run with Pittsburgh and 325th in his career. That's a lot for anyone to reach with one team and the MLB commemorated it with its own social media post, while also revealing he passed the legendary Roberto Clemente (240) for the third-most in franchise history. Clemente, who spent all 18 years of his career with the Pirates, made the All-Star Game 15 times while earning 12 Gold Gloves and sits in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He is one of the most decorated players in MLB history. Advertisement It will remain to be seen if McCutchen has enough left in the tank to continue to rise up the board, as he still sits behind Ralph Kiner (1946 to 1953) at 301 and Willie Stargell (1962 to 1982) at 475. That could certainly seem like a difficult task, considering McCutchen is 38 years old and is set to become a free agent when the season concludes. Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Either way, though, it's a fun bright spot in what has otherwise been a disappointing season for the Pirates, as they sported a 27-41 record going into their Wednesday matchup, putting them in last place in the NL Central.
