Dodgers star, Nashville native Mookie Betts leaves Japan because of illness
Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts, a Nashville John Overton High School graduate, has left Tokyo and will miss his team's two-game series there against the Chicago Cubs because of an undisclosed illness.
Betts has lost 15 pounds, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
Betts, an eight-time All-Star, returned to Los Angeles early Monday morning to continue recovering ahead of his team's domestic season opener March 27.
'Mookie flew home early evening, late afternoon yesterday and arrived safely,' Roberts told reporters in Tokyo. 'It just made the most sense for him to get back to a regular routine. That's kind of where we're at and we all support it.'
The Dodgers are Cubs are set to begin to the 2025 MLB season at the Tokyo Dome on Tuesday, followed by another game Wednesday.
Betts, who won the 2018 American League MVP Award while he was with the Boston Red Sox, made the trip to Japan despite feeling ill before the team left. He quickly tired Sunday during a workout before the decision was made to send him back to Los Angeles.
Betts helped Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers win the World Series last year, his third championship overall and second with Los Angeles.
Betts also is a six-time Gold Glove winner and seven-time Silver Slugger Award winner.

MLB Insider Predicts Toughest All-Star Battles in National League
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The time has come for Major League Baseball fans to start submitting their All-Star votes, and one of the biggest debates is which National League first baseman will earn the starting spot. More news: Braves Might Make One Player Available at Trade Deadline: Report MLB insider David Schoenfield believes the competition is between New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso and Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman. Both Alonso and Freeman have been on quite the tear the first half of the season. The World Series MVP is putting on quite the show as he leads the NL in batting average (.354), is tied for first in doubles with Alonso and Brendan Donovan (20), ranks second in OPS (1.024) and third in OPS+ (189). Freeman, 35, appears to be hitting better as he ages. Meanwhile, Alonso has earned two All-Star selections the last two season despited posting an OPS below .800 last season and hitting just .211 in 2023. The 2025 campaign appears to be unfolding into Alonso's best performance yet in the batters box. Alonso is hitting .301 with 17 home runs, 61 runs batted in, and a .990 OPS this season. For Schoenfield, Alonso being more effective in high-leverage gives him the edge over Freeman. "This is a coin flip, especially because Freeman spent time on the injured list early this season," Schoenfield writes. "Both have also been incredible in high-leverage situations, with Freeman hitting .303/.457/.606 and Alonso even better at .419/.525/.907. That does it for me. Alonso gets the nod." LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 04: Pete Alonso #20 of the New York Mets hits a two run home run in front of Dalton Rushing #68 of the Los Angeles Dodgers and umpire Jansen Visconti... LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 04: Pete Alonso #20 of the New York Mets hits a two run home run in front of Dalton Rushing #68 of the Los Angeles Dodgers and umpire Jansen Visconti #52, to take a 3-0 lead, during the first inning at Dodger Stadium on June 04, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. MoreAs for who will be named the National League's third outfielder comes down between James Wood, Kyle Tucker, and Fernando Tatis Jr, according to Schoenfield. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Corbin Carroll get the first two nods, but there's a case to be made for the third outfielder. Tucker is having another superstar season, and while Tatis isn't as hot as he was in April, he is still an elite defensive player in right field. However, Schoenfield believes Wood should get the nod. The second-year outfielder is slashing 270/.366/.533 with 16 home runs this season. Finally, second base is perhaps the most difficult decision to narrow down as there are several elite players in the NL. Schoenfield has the competition coming down to Ketel Marte, Brendan Donovan, Brice Turang, and Nico Hoerner. The various options for the NL starting second baseman is a testament to just how star-studded the NL really is as opposed to a less competitive American League. Schoenfield ultimately votes for Marte, as the Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman has a slash line of .294/.418/.603 with 12 home runs in 39 games. Ultimately, Schoenfield's starting NL lineup for the Midsummer Classic in Atlanta looks like this: C: Will Smith, Los Angeles Dodgers 1B: Pete Alonso, New York Mets 2B: Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks 3B: Manny Machado, San Diego Padres SS: Francisco Lindor, New York Mets OF: Pete Crow-Armstrong, Chicago Cubs OF: Corbin Carroll, Arizona Diamondbacks OF: James Wood, Washington Nationals DH: Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers SP: Paul Skenes, Pittsburgh Pirates More news: How to Buy Boston Red Sox MLB Stars and Stripes Hats: 2025 Fourth of July Headwear For more MLB news, visit Newsweek Sports.

Red Sox Top Prospects Send Heartfelt Message to Kyle Teel Amid MLB Debut
Red Sox Top Prospects Send Heartfelt Message to Kyle Teel Amid MLB Debut originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After the 2024 season, the Boston Red Sox had four prospects atop their organization. Those four were expected to be the future of the team, but one of them was traded to the Chicago White Sox for ace pitcher Garrett Crochet. He's been incredible for the Red Sox, but the loss of their former top prospect hurt. Advertisement Kyle Teel, the Red Sox's former top-three prospect, suited up for his Major League debut with the White Sox. He had two walks and one run, along with his first career hit in a win for the White Sox in his MLB debut. After his debut, Teel made an Instagram post thanking everyone who helped him get to the big leagues. In the comments, three Red Sox prospects commented with their congratulations for Teel after a successful debut. Marcelo Mayer, who was called up shortly before Teel, said, "Proud of u ❤️." Top prospect in baseball, Roman Anthony, said, "Well deserved KT ❤️." Kristian Campbell, another teammate of Teels from their time in the Red Sox Minor League system, said, "Whooo whooo." Advertisement Tell played with all three Red Sox players, and now only Anthony is not in the Major Leagues. With his call-up seemingly eminent, all four could soon be in the Major Leagues. Chicago White Sox catcher Kyle Teel (8) jogs to first base after taking his first walk in his MLB debut during the second inning against the Kansas City Royals at Guaranteed Rate Gorski-Imagn Images In 2024, while Campbell was still a bit of an unknown prospect, sitting outside the top 30 prospect rankings for the Red Sox, the other three topped the prospect list for Boston. Teel was third, Anthony second, and Mayer first within the organization. In 2025, all three are within the top 25 prospects in all of baseball. Teel at 25th, Mayer at eighth, and Anthony at first overall. Despite Teel no longer being within the Red Sox organization, he still has a connection with his fellow top Red Sox prospects. The support Mayer, Anthony, and Campbell showed Teel is a sign of how much they all got along. Advertisement The heartwarming messages they sent to Teel show that even though Teel no longer wears the same colored socks, their bond is still strong. Red Sox Urged to Call Up Roman Anthony and Send Down Kristian Campbell
Red Sox Urged to Call Up Roman Anthony and Send Down Kristian Campbell originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox have number one overall prospect Roman Anthony sitting in the Minor Leagues. He hasn't gotten the call-up to the big leagues, much to the chagrin of Red Sox fans and media. While Anthony is awaiting the call to the big leagues, an MLB insider made a ridiculous suggestion on how to call him up. Advertisement Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggested that the Red Sox should call up Anthony and demote Kristian Campbell to do so. Rosenthal said, "Exchange one for the other would make the Red Sox a better team." Rosenthal's suggestion comes after Campbell had a rough night defensively against the New York Yankees. He broke the wrong way on a ground ball, leading to two runs scoring later that inning. Rosenthal's suggestion focuses primarily on defense. "Their best defensive alignment would be Anthony in left," Rosenthal explained. "Jarren Duran in center and a combination of Ceddanne Rafaela and David Hamilton at second." That combination would allow Anthony to get the call-up, while not taking away from the Red Sox's outfield firepower with Duran and Wilyer Abreu. While Rafaela is elite in center field, Duran is no slouch, being a finalist for the Gold Glove in 2024. Boston Red Sox second baseman Kristian Campbell (28) follows through on an RBI single against the New York Yankees during the third inning at Yankee Penner-Imagn Images Moving the defense around would be a daunting task in the middle of the season. But with Anthony knocking down the door to the Major Leagues, the Red Sox have to make a decision soon. Before long, they need to call up Anthony. Advertisement Sending Campbell down would, in Rosnethal's opinion, be a huge upgrade. "This isn't complicated," Rosenthal said. "Improve the offense, improve the defense." Adding Anthony to the Major League roster is a priority for the Red Sox, but demoting Campbell after all he's been asked to take on at 22 years old would be a ridiculous move to make. While Campbell has struggled recently, he began the year on a hot start. Instead of forcing Campbell to learn first base and move around constantly, the Red Sox should park him at second base and let him solidify himself there as the second baseman of the future for the Red Sox. With the $80 million investment in Campbell, sending him down to the Minor Leagues doesn't do him any good. Rosenthal's suggestion may work in theory, but it is ridiculous considering the circumstances surrounding the roster.
