In reply, the Cholas' chase went off the rails in the PowerPlay once Sunny removed S. Sujay and Waseem Ahmed. The Trichy side managed only 28 for four in the first six overs, and slumped into deeper trouble at 48 for six. However, J. Kousik (62, 39b, 5x4, 3x6) and R. Rajkumar (59, 26b, 5x4, 5x6) did not go down without a fight and gave a mighty scare by smashing the Spartans' bowlers all over the park during their 88-run alliance for the seventh wicket off just 41 balls. The experienced Mohammed eventually struck twice in the 17th over, including that of Rajkumar, to turn the tide again. Kousik, though kept the hopes alive till the end, but his decision not to farm the strike after hitting the first ball of the 20th over to the boundary proved costly as his side fell short by the barest of margins. Earlier, Hari's innings was all about timing and elegance as he hit some pristine drives down the ground and through covers off the pacers in the PowerPlay to get his side off to a steady start. After the 10th over, the opener and Sunny (45) stepped up a gear, taking on the spinners who struggled to grip the wet ball following evening rains that caused a 25-minute delay to the start of the game. Nearly three years ago, Karthik Meiyappan etched his name in the record books when he performed a hat-trick for the UAE against Sri Lanka in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. The leg-spinner, who has played 31 ODIs and 15 T20Is for the UAE, has since taken a leap of faith, returning to Chennai last year to pursue his career and find a place in the IPL. On Sunday, the 24-year-old took that first step when he made his TNPL debut for Siechem Madurai Panthers against Salem Spartans here at the Sri Ramakrishna College ground. 'The quality of cricket and the standards are pretty high. Being a spinner in Tamil Nadu, it's challenging considering how good the players are against spin. I am looking forward to that challenge. The TNPL is a great platform from which you can progress to the IPL, and as a leg-spinner, I fancy my chances. So that's the reason I moved back,' explained Karthik. Born in Chennai, he moved to the UAE at the age of seven, where he began playing the game and went on to be part of the under-19 side and then progressed to the senior team. Recalling his moment of glory, the 24-year-old said: 'Playing the World Cup itself was a great experience. Going into the Sri Lankan game, it's extremely hard for you to dream of a hat-trick. It just happens by itself.' 'I felt I planned out the over well. I was going to back myself with the googly (for the hat-trick ball), like I always did. I still feel like he (Dasun Shanaka) picked it, but then it landed perfectly, came out well, out of the hands, it felt great.' On his targets for the year, Karthik says, 'I want to put up maximum performances for the side and get wickets. After TNPL, I'm excited for my second season in the TNCA first division because I feel better than last year (he played for Alwarpet CC), which was challenging. I'm confident that if I put up a good performance this season, it'll probably open the doors for me.'

He looked in ominous touch as he raced to 18 with a couple of boundaries and a six off the first 10 deliveries. Ashwin had to pay the price of his erratic behaviour on the field that prompted the officials to hand him a total of 30 percent penalty for the act. "Ashwin was fined 10 percent for showing dissent towards the umpires and 20 percent for misuse of equipment. He accepted the sanctions," a TNPL official told Cricbuzz. It was the 11th delivery that he faced, which was the fifth ball of the fifth over, Ashwin tried to play the paddle sweep but the delivery struck him on the pads. Umpire Venkatesan Krithika raised his finger to an appeal from the bowler as Ashwin was scampering home for a quick single. From the replays, it was clear that the ball pitched outside the leg-stump. Ashwin couldn't appeal for DRS as he and his opening partner Shivam Singh (30 off 27 balls) had exhausted their quota of referrals in the first over itself on leg-side wide deliveries (new rule introduced in TNPL).
