Meet the villagers refusing to make way for Britain's new Universal theme park - but fear they could be 'bullied' into moving out anyway

A group of residents is refusing to leave their homes as Universal pushes ahead with a colossal £50bn, 476-acre theme park that will wipe their village off the map.
Seven homes, with an average price of £380,500, are believed to have already been bought by the entertainment giant to clear space for the park and a new dual carriageway.
Several owners have accepted offers and moved out, while others have been approached with buyout proposals.
But a handful of neighbours along Manor Road in Kempston Hardwick, Bedfordshire, are digging in, despite being surrounded by uncertainty and mounting pressure, and say they are determined to stay, despite fears for their future.
The developers have sought a 'Special Development Order' which could see them granted powers to compulsory purchase.
One resident, Claudia Pixley, 45, who lives with her young daughter in a bungalow set to be trapped between the park site and a sprawling construction compound.
She says she has faced intimidation tactics and still has no clear answers on what will happen if she refuses to sell.
Ms Pixley, who has lived in her bungalow for a decade and remains one of the few holdouts as bulldozers prepare to move in, said: 'He knocked on my door and I invited him in to talk about what was going to happen.
'When I said I didn't want to move, he said "if you're going to be difficult, we can build the theme park entrance opposite your house".

'I couldn't believe it. It was threatening.
'We're just asking for basic human decency. I'd like to see someone come round and speak with us fairly.
'We thought we might be forced to move under the compulsory purchase order but we've now been told that won't be the case.
'Between us residents remaining, we have contacted the borough council and Universal - nobody would tell us anything.
'We still haven't had contact from Universal even to this day.'
Universal want to build the dual carriageway next to their homes which will be sandwiched between the theme park and a construction village which is currently being built.
Universal Destinations and Experiences operates theme parks and resorts around the world based on the works of the Entertainment conglomerate.
They are best known for successful film franchises include Fast and Furious, Jurassic Park, and Despicable Me.
The park could be home to Europe's tallest rides reaching 377ft (115m), slated for completion in 2031.
Ms Pixley explained that a group of residents had 'descended' upon a parish council meeting in June after not getting answers.
She also has concerns over a dual carriageway earmarked along Manor Road which would feed visitors into the park bringing heavy traffic.

The householder added: 'This is the only home where I've truly felt happy. I raised my daughter here and we want to stay.
'I know people are all for the theme park and they're excited but we want respect.'
Tom, 66, has lived at his home for 31 years and said while he wasn't against the park, locals had been left 'up in the air'.
The father-of-two said: 'We used to look out onto fields and now we're facing a construction site for years.
'I think it would be good for the area and for the UK but everything's up in the air at the moment.
'With a divorce, they talk about 'what you're accustomed to'. We're not going to get any of that.
'I wouldn't be prepared to move but if there was no other point and it was for the right deal, I guess we'd have to.
'It's bullying.'
The remaining Manor Road residents say those who have already struck a deal and moved out were happy with the compensation they received.
However some locals have also been asked to sign non-disclosure agreements by the company working on behalf of Universal.
Tenant Ritchie Wood, 54, has lived on Manor Road for ten years and said he would have nowhere to go if his landlord decided to sell.
Ritchie, who works in construction, said: 'If they do buy it off my landlord, where am I going to go? They'd be taking away my home.
'I'd want Universal to rehome me. The theme park is a good thing for the economy but there needs to be some sort of fair compensation.
'I can't understand why they won't speak to us. My concern is the lack of contact.
'It is a worry as to what is going to happen to our homes.
'My parents are in their 80s and they live five minutes down the road. I want to be close to them.
'But even if I looked at other villages nearby, it'd be triple the rent.
'Universal have sent letters saying they'd acquired land but they're all a generic address to the homeowner or occupier.
'You'd think they'd at least learn our names.'
When contacted by the BBC, Universal's PR representative declined to comment.
MailOnline approached Universal for comment.
In documents submitted to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), Universal proposes building attractions reaching up to 377 feet (115 metres) - making them taller than any ride currently operating in Europe.
The current tallest ride in the UK is Thorpe Park's Hyperia, standing at 236 feet (72 metres), while the tallest ride in Europe is Red Force at 367 feet (112 metres), located at PortAventura World in Spain.
'The reason for proposing structures up to this maximum height is to allow the proposed theme park to compete with other attractions in Europe,' according to the documents.
'Although the Universal Orlando Resort does not currently have attractions up to this height, taller attractions are more common in Europe, where rides need to be taller to create the experience, as space is more constrained.
'Building attractions that are higher, rather than over greater areas, also makes the best use of land which is in line with planning policy.'
Universal Studios is expected to welcome 8.5 million visitors annually, with 55,000 guests on peak days.
The park will be accessed via a grand tree-lined boulevard for drivers and a purpose-built transport hub for public transport users.
Guests will arrive at a large entry plaza - open to ticket-holders and non-ticket-holders alike - featuring restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues.
Paying guests will enter the main park through an iconic Universal archway.

WWE legend Al Snow's Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), which was the subject of acclaimed Netflix docu-series Wrestlers, is launching a new initiative on our shores to discover sports entertainment's next superstar. The company is hoping to encourage footballers, rugby players and other athletes in the UK to chase a career in the ring, after stars from basketball, gymnastics, the NFL and more have made the transition in the US. Speaking exclusively to Metro, the 61-year-old star has a stark warning for anyone thinking it'll be an easy ride. 'It is far easier to be a player in the World Cup of the soccer team than it is to be on the main roster in WWE,' he insisted. 'Think of the number of players on the team. Think of the number of teams now, what are your odds? 'Think of the number of wrestlers that are on the main roster of WWE. Think of the number of people that wish to be in that place, and now think of the odds.' OVW was recently bought by UK-based sports agency Morley Sports Management (MSM), who also own Cymru Premier football club Haverfordwest County AFC, and they are looking to their take first UK intake of trainees from football and rugby in 2026. Rob Edwards, MSM founder and CEO, said: 'We absolutely know the talent is there in the UK – particularly in football – and the opportunities we OVW provide could give so many sports people another chance.' Anyone interested in training at the OVW Academy can apply here. They won't be the first, with former Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese and rugby league player-turned-WWE superstar Ridge Holland among those to make the transition. Tim failed to make an impact, while Ridge has had a rollercoaster career – but he came in as a fan with 'respect for the business'. 'That goes a long way,' he told Metro in 2022. 'Athletes tend to have some form of ego… You've been a top athlete in your chosen sport, and then you've gotta start at the bottom. 'You've got to just humble yourself, put your nose to the grindstone and listen, work hard and take each day as it comes.' So, what can the athletes expect? 'At the very beginning, really focusing on the fundamentals, just like any actual sport,' the former WWE European Champion explained. 'I can't emphasise enough how much that plays a role in their development and their overall performance and their consistency, and their ability to mitigate the possibility to the injury.' Al knows all about the physical impact of a career in wrestling, having had both knees replaced a few years ago to deal with a brutal amount of pain. 'I wake up every day in pain,' he explained. '[Before the replacements] it was so severe that sometimes I would be exhausted by the middle of the day, and I'd have to lay down to just get some rest.' Not everyone will be able to hack it, as Al recalled working with a 'kickboxer, a multi-black belt in Taekwondo' who also did some 'cross country biking' and other disciplines. 'He lasted a week,' he said. 'I've dealt with this for ages. I've been training people on different levels and watched athletes come from other sports.' People coming from outside the business often have preconceptions, only to quickly realise the 'physical exertion and amount of commitment' it takes. 'A lot of them are like, 'You know what? That's it. I'm done,'' he shrugged. He also dismissed the idea anyone except the wrestler themselves can be blamed for a lack of success. 'Wrestlers make themselves a star. I know wrestlers would love to make you believe that it's someone else's fault for their own shortcomings,' he laughed. 'They're more than willing to take credit when it's their success.' What will Al really be looking for when they start recruiting from football and rugby? 'You don't have to look like a bodybuilder. You just need to look like you make your living in a competitive combat situation. That's it,' he said. 'I don't think that's asking for much.' There's also the mental side, with personality being almost more important that having the right look, charisma or skills. 'If you're a cancer and you're going to be a detriment, trust me, you're not worth it,' he said bluntly. Al knows his stuff, having worked with former WWE Champions Cody Rhodes and The Miz early in their wrestling journeys, with the latter coming to wrestling through reality TV. More Trending 'They did not make it easy on him in the locker room,' he recalled. 'Everything he's gotten he's earned.' That doesn't mean training with OVW, or even making it to the bright lights of WWE, will make everyone happy. There'll be more work to be done. 'There are number of my kids that are still in WWE that if I were to pick up the phone right now, all you'd hear is them complain for two hours on the phone,' he said. Governor Bailey is wrong: We should embrace the digital pound

Is the digital pound dead in the water? More than 100 countries are looking at the creation of their very own digital currencies. China already has one. The EU is developing a digital euro at pace. But the Bank of England? It seems to be tacking the opposite way to the rest of the world. Andrew Bailey told MPs on the Treasury Committee that he would need 'a lot of convincing' to greenlight a launch, which the Bank has already said couldn't happen until sometime in the 'second half of the current decade' anyway. Is this an opportunity missed? Even a case where the governor's conservatism threatens to leave Britons in the digital dark ages? First off, I should explain what the digital pound actually is. Digi-pounds (that's not the official name; I'm not sure we have one yet) would be currency issued by the Bank that could be stored in a digital wallet provided by a company like, say, Apple. This would allow you to pay for things directly, without the need for the card you currently have to have set up to use Apple Pay. People could also pay you by the same means. PS, Apple CEO Tim Cook isn't paying either me or The Independent for the mention. I'm using Apple Pay as an example because it's a service I use. Bailey is distinctly unimpressed with the idea of this new form of money. His preferred option is to help the market improve digital payment tech, which he said could deliver 'huge benefits'. Fraud reduction, lower costs, faster payments to SMEs, which at this point are probably saying chance would be a fine thing. "That's a sensible place to do it because that's where most of our money is," the governor opined. But here's an idea: why not simply do both? Is that really so hard? Or is the Bank yet again in 'can't do' mode? It is true that there are legitimate concerns about digital currencies. Sceptics worry about vulnerability to hacking. Fears have also been expressed about their making it easier to launder money, even to facilitate terrorist financing. Criminals took up Bitcoin with alacrity. Lately, they have favoured so-called ' stablecoins ', the value of which are linked to an underlying commodity or an existing currency such as the dollar. On the flip side, some critics have voiced fears about digital currencies being used to facilitate government snooping. This has been a big concern with the Chinese version given the obsessive interest in what its citizens do, say and even think of that country's government. But every new technology comes with pluses and minuses. It would be better for Bailey to accept that and roll with the punches. Bitcoin and its ilk already have a legion of fans in this country. If people like the concept of central bank issued digital currencies, there would theoretically be nothing to stop them from using digital euros if and when they arrive. There are already outlets in London that accept the paper equivalent (and dollars and yen while we're at it). Here's a potential selling point for your business: 'We accept the digital euros!' Right now, the central bank looks flat-footed, a very obvious laggard, largely thanks to the conservatism of the governor. I suspect some of Bailey's caution can be tracked back to his time at the head of the Financial Conduct Authority, a fairly thankless, if well remunerated, task at the best of times. Its CEO tends to get the blame for everything and the credit for nothing. Launching a new form of money is bound to create challenges and it will once again be Bailey's head on the block if something goes wrong. There have lately have been suggestions that the Bank could cease or at least shelve the work it has been doing on a digital pound. That would be a mistake. Digital currencies are coming. The Bank should accept that and prepare for the future. The governor badly needs to pull his legs out of the mud in which they're stuck.
