Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley denies assault, says he'll see ex-girlfriend in court over defamation

Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley is vigorously denying allegations that he punched his ex-girlfriend, fellow U.S. track athlete Alaysha Johnson, in a Miami hotel earlier this month.
Kerley was arrested on May 1 and charged with misdemeanor battery after Johnson accused him of striking her in the face, causing a nosebleed.
Kerley pleaded not guilty in court on May 3 and, through his attorney Richard Cooper, announced plans to contest the charges vigorously. Kerley also intends to sue Johnson for defamation, calling the accusations 'completely false' and damaging to his reputation.
Kerley's statement highlighted his refusal to speak to police without legal counsel:
'What's being said about me isn't just false, it's damaging, and I'm standing up for the truth.'
His attorney maintains that Kerley was actually the victim during the altercation and expects the charges to be dismissed soon. Cooper asked fans and sponsors for patience as the investigation proceeds.
Following his arrest, Kerley was immediately suspended from the Michael Johnson Grand Slam Track event in Miami and also removed from an upcoming Philadelphia meet. Organizers confirmed the decision as the case remains under investigation.

Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has barred map approvals for 137 plots in the Swarn Jayanti Puram housing scheme, which are currently under litigation in the civil court. The scheme, launched in 1998, sold 1,553 plots of various sizes, but allotment of 137 were cancelled when owners defaulted on instalments. It was alleged that a few GDA officials, in connivance with property dealers, got the allotments of these plots restored between 2005 and 2007 after paying a paltry sum to the original allottees. The officials then got the plots transferred in their names. The irregularities came to light in 2011 when a petition was filed in the high court, alleging that officials had indulged in fraudulent means to restore cancelled plots in the area. The court had directed Moradabad range commissioner to investigate the matter. The inquiry had found some officials, including former secretary and vice chairperson of GDA, were involved in the scam, and FIRs were registered against them in Dec 2017. However, action against officials found involved in the irregularities has been slow. But according to the rules, the plots ought to have been restored at the prevailing sector rate of 2005-2007 or 75% of the market value, whichever was higher. The sector rate then was Rs 12,000 per sqm.

Bengaluru: Nearly two years after a 68-year-old stonecutter lost his life in a road accident, a Bengaluru court has awarded his family Rs 8 lakh in compensation. The order was passed by judge Shreyansh Doddamani of the 21st additional small causes court and motor accident claims tribunal on May 27. The fatal accident occurred on NH-75 near Bethamangala Cross in Kolar district on June 28, 2023. Rajappa, riding pillion on a motorcycle, was critically injured when a speeding car allegedly rammed the two-wheeler from behind. Thrown off the bike, he succumbed to his injuries at RL Jalappa Hospital later that evening. The resident of Shivaramapura in Kolar was a stonecutter and part-time farmer reportedly earning Rs 30,000 a month. His wife Narayanamma, and sons Amarnath SR and Manjunatha R filed a compensation claim of Rs 35 lakh under the Motor Vehicles Act, stating he was their primary breadwinner. While the car's owner, Arun Kumar PR, confirmed valid insurance with Tata AIG General Insurance Co Ltd, both he and the insurer denied negligence. Arambai Tenggol calls off 10-day Manipur bandh, protest to continue
1 2 Imphal : Arambai Tenggol has officially called off its 10-day bandh in Manipur, which was launched to protest the arrest of its leader, Asem Kanan Singh. The suspension took effect on Tuesday morning, marking the third day of the agitation. At a press conference on Tuesday, the group's PRO, Robin Mangang, condemned Singh's arrest and said the bandh was withdrawn in response to public appeals and recognition of the hardships faced by civilians. "Understanding and accepting the various inconveniences caused by the ongoing total shutdown, we have decided to call off the bandh," he said. Despite lifting the bandh, Arambai Tenggol vowed to continue democratic forms of agitation until Asem Kanan Singh is released unconditionally. "We are an unarmed group formed as a socio-cultural organisation with the objective to preserve and promote the culture and traditions of Manipur. However, circumstances forced us to defend the state from 'illegal immigrant Kuki terrorists', which led to us taking up arms.
