Ethiopian Airlines considering order for 20 regional jets, CEO says

Ethiopian Airlines is looking to order at least 20 regional or small narrowbody jets as it moves to expand its domestic fleet and replace some ageing aircraft, the airline's chief executive told Reuters on Monday.
"We are evaluating three aircraft models, the E-2 from Embraer, the A220 from Airbus, and the 737 MAX 7 from Boeing," CEO Mesfin Tasew Bekele said in an interview.
The final order quantity will depend on the type chosen, he added. Boeing's 737 MAX 7, which has a larger seating capacity and sits at the bottom of a larger category than the Airbus A220 and Embraer E-2, is yet to be certified.
Africa's largest carrier is experiencing strong travel demand but has been constrained by jet delivery delays and the grounding of some aircraft due to engine shortages stemming from supply chain disruptions.
"We are receiving airplanes from both Boeing and Airbus, but deliveries have been delayed, some by three months, some six months, some more," Bekele said on the sidelines of an annual IATA meeting of global airline leaders.
The company is also in talks with lessors to bring onboard some jets to ease capacity constraints.
The airline is among several facing grounded aircraft due to bottlenecks in engine maintenance plants. Ethiopian has three Boeing 787 widebody jets grounded due to a shortage of Rolls-Royce engines, with five turboprop aircraft grounded due to a shortage of RTX's Pratt & Whitney engines.
"Normally engines were supposed to be repaired and returned in three months typically, but now it takes six months or even more to get them repaired and returned," Bekele said.

Global airlines pile on India capacity as US-Europe traffic drops

The skies above India are about to get a lot busier as international carriers add more routes to the world's most-populated nation to make up for tepid transatlantic demand that's come under pressure from global economic uncertainties. Foreign airlines and the biggest Indian operators announced a range of plans at the International Air Transport Association annual general meeting in New Delhi this week to start or increase services to and from the South Asian nation. Delta Air Lines Inc. plans to begin non-stop services from its hub in Atlanta to New Delhi, and the airline also announced a code-sharing pact with low-cost specialist IndiGo , alongside partners Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. Now under private ownership, Air India Ltd. as well as market leader IndiGo are planning their own major international pushes. Air India has placed orders for 570 planes from Airbus SE and Boeing Co. since 2023 and IndiGo has an order book for more than 900 Airbus planes, including a recently expanded purchase of 60 A350 widebody aircraft. India is already the world's third-largest domestic aviation market and the country's rising middle class makes the nation of more than 1.4 billion people a crucial driver of future growth. The upbeat outlook contrasts with caution about global travel demand as US President Donald Trump's tariff uncertainties prompt households to rein in their spending. 'It's hard to find a more exciting market right now than India,' Shai Weiss, the chief executive officer of Virgin Atlantic, said in an interview in New Delhi. 'It's going to be a tough market in the beginning, it's going to be well competed, but we're betting on the next 30 years.' Live Events With the focus on the Indian market intensifying, some in the industry have expressed concerns about a possible race to the bottom as airlines undercut each other to fill seats. That risks resulting in excess capacity and ever thinner margins for carriers. Still, those fears may be overblown as any market asymmetry typically works itself out, according to British Airways CEO Sean Doyle. In addition to the large Indian diaspora in the UK, the airline is looking to tap the huge number of travelers from India to the US, he said. 'Sometimes you may get an imbalance, where capacity comes ahead of growth,' said Doyle, whose airline operates 56 flights a week to India. 'But then demand catches up because you'll never get an even correlation. There's a lot of opportunities for direct services.' IndiGo has emerged as a major winner of the push by foreign firms into the market, inking partnerships with some of the global industry's biggest names. At an event in New Delhi on Sunday, Delta Air, along with its partners Virgin Atlantic and Air France-KLM, announced plans to increase code shares with India's biggest airline. IndiGo, which hosted this year's IATA AGM, also has codeshares with Qantas Airways Ltd., British Airways and Japan Airlines Co. When asked about whether IndiGo will more do work exclusively with Delta, Virgin and Air France, CEO Pieter Elbers said 'we've passed the stage of dating, but we're not at the stage of marriage.' Still, India's tightly regulated aviation sector presents a major hurdle for foreign airlines wanting to expand. Flight rights to the country are based on so-called bilateral agreements that determine the number of seats carriers can operate on a reciprocal basis. The policies risk hindering India's aspirations to become a global player and should be revised, according to Emirates, which is restricted from adding to capacity into India. 'Hopefully that'll change when they perhaps realize that the significance, the criticality, of their transport as a wealth multiplier for their own economy,' said President Tim Clark. 'It's quite clear that not to do that will only shoot yourself in the foot in the end. But it's up to the Indian government to decide what they want to do on that.'

Lapses in Haryana's e-tenders spark probe by urban local bodies

The department of Urban Local Bodies (ULB), Haryana, has launched a wide-ranging inquiry into procedural lapses in the state's e-Tenders Haryana procurement system, following a scathing audit by the principal accountant general (audit), Haryana. The audit flagged significant irregularities in sanitation and solid waste management contracts awarded between 2018-19 and 2022-23, officials said, adding that eight contractors and four tenders have been affected. In a memo dated June 3, the ULB directed all municipal commissioners and district municipal commissioners to submit detailed clarifications and corrective actions taken on the flagged discrepancies. The deadline for submission is one week. 'A consolidated and comprehensive response is essential to address the audit observations made by the Principal Accountant General. Any procedural lapses that compromise transparency and fairness in public procurement will be dealt with firmly,' said a senior ULB official, requesting anonymity. According to the audit report, three major areas of concern have emerged. First, several tenders were cancelled despite valid and competitive lowest (L-1) bids. These include Tender IDs 2022_HRY_231151_1 and 2022_HRY_231157_1 (related to Manesar Division I and II) and 2022_HRY_218507_1 (pertaining to the Integrated Solid Waste Management project for the Panchkula Cluster). Additionally, tenders for dumpsite remediation in Sector 23, Panchkula—IDs 2022_HRY_251382_1 and 2022_HRY_231622_3—were also cancelled without documented justification. Second, the report noted that certain tenders allowed insufficient time for bid submission, potentially restricting fair competition. This was observed in tenders related to mini tippers with hoppers, among others. Third, the audit pointed to inadequate time provided for bidder representation during technical evaluation stages—critical for fair assessment of eligibility and capacity. This was flagged in tenders related to door-to-door waste collection in Division-II, Manesar, and again in the Panchkula remediation tenders. Beyond these specific issues, the audit cited systemic non-compliance with mandatory timelines and disclosure norms. Key project details and evaluation outcomes were either delayed or not uploaded on the public procurement portal, undermining transparency.
