before the latter's unexpected Test retirement announcement on Monday, May 12. Kohli, who ranks as India's fourth-highest Test run-scorer with 9230 runs and 30 centuries, made this decision despite an upcoming five-Test series against England in June.
Shastri and Kohli, who formed one of India's most successful captain-coach partnerships in Test cricket, had discussed the retirement decision a week before the public announcement.

"I did speak to him about it, I think a week before that and his mind was very clear that he'd given us everything. There were no regrets. There were one or two questions I asked, and that's a personal conversation which, you know, he mentioned very clearly, there were no doubts in his mind, which made me think, 'Yes, the time is right'. The mind has told his body that it's time to go," Shastri told Sanjana Ganesan in The

Kohli leaves behind a remarkable legacy as India's most successful Test captain, securing 40 wins in 68 Tests, surpassing MS Dhoni's record by 13 victories.
Quiz:
Who's that IPL player?
Shastri acknowledged that Kohli's intense approach to the game may have contributed to his early retirement.
"If he decided to do something, then he gave his 100%, which is not easy to match. Individually, as a bowler, as a batsman. A player does his job, then you sit back. But when the team goes out, it's as if he has to take all the wickets, he has to take all the catches, he has to make all the decisions on the field. That much involvement, I would think there's going to be a burnout somewhere if he doesn't take a rest, if he doesn't compartmentalise how much he wants to play across formats, there is bound to be a burnout."
Shastri highlighted Kohli's global impact and his ability to draw audiences to the sport.
"He's got accolades around the globe. He has a bigger following than any other cricketer in the last decade. Whether it's Australia, whether it's South Africa, he just got people to watch the game. There was a love-hate relationship. They would get angry because he had the ability to get under the skin of the viewer also. In the way he celebrated, you know his intensity was such that it was like a rash. It spread very quickly, not just within the dressing room, but within living rooms as well for people watching cricket. So he was an infectious personality."
Virat Kohli retires from Test cricket after 14 years
The retirement announcement caught Shastri off guard, despite understanding the mental toll of the game.
"Virat surprised me because I thought he had at least two-three years of Test match cricket left in him. But then, when you're mentally fried and overcooked, that's what tells your body. You might be physically the fittest guy in the business. You might be fitter than half the guys in your team, but mentally you're well done, as they say, then it sends a message to the body. You know, that's it."
The Shastri-Kohli partnership led India to several historic achievements, including their first Test series victory in Australia, consecutive series wins in the West Indies, and breaking a 22-year winless streak in Sri Lanka. The team also showed strong performance in challenging conditions in South Africa and England.

Shastri emphasized that Kohli had achieved everything possible in his career.
"At times when you quit the game, you know, and after a month or two months you say, 'I wish I had done this, I wish I had done this.' He's done everything. He's captained sides, he's won World Cups, he's won an Under-19 World Cup himself. I mean, there's nothing for him to achieve."

It hurts but you cannot keep crying, says Jannik Sinner

Italy's Jannik Sinner tosses his racket during the final. (AP Photo) PARIS: Jannik Sinner, the world No. 1, seated before a room full of media, ran his fingers through his unruly mop, desperately trying to pick positives from the epic clash against Carlos Alcaraz in which he had three match points. 'Seeing my level today (Sunday). It has improved since Rome, which was my main goal, to see where my level is at,' the 23-year-old said. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Sinner, who returned to competition in May following a three-month ban for testing positive for anabolic agent Clostebol, could play just one tournament in the lead-up to the French Open . Circumstances apart, the final will be looked at as much as the one Alcaraz won as the opportunity Sinner let slip. 'Making the final is difficult to accept because I had lots of chances,' said Sinner, a three-time Major winner who came up short in the title match of a Grand Slam for the first time. 'If you only see the sad part, you're never going to come back. I believe I have improved since last year. It hurts, yes, but you cannot keep crying.

Gunther dethrones Jey Uso to reclaim World Heavyweight title on WWE RAW

Image via WWE Gunther has once again reached the top of the mountain in WWE . The fight field was set for a huge collision on this week's edition of Monday Night RAW. Weeks ago, Gunther had announced that he would challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship on the June 9th edition of RAW in Phoenix, Arizona. The night had come and his opponent was none other than the man who dethroned him at WrestleMania 41 for the title, Main Event Jey Uso . Following an explosive rematch between the duo, it was The Ring General who shocked the world with a huge title win. Gunther has become a two-time World Heavyweight Champion Jey Uso walked into the match less than 100%. He had been a part of a huge tag team match at last weekend's Money in the Bank Premium Live Event, where he and Cody Rhodes had defeated John Cena and Logan Paul. With momentum on his side, The YEET man was ready for the high-stakes title showdown; however, standing in his way was the dominant Gunther, who wanted to reclaim the title he lost at WrestleMania 41. As soon as the bell rang, both men went up against each other, trading blows and power-packed moves. Gunther tried to establish dominance, but Uso had the heart, the support of the fans, and most importantly, his son, watching at ringside. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Good News: You May Be Richer Than You Think Undo The champion came back each time to combat the fury of The Ring General. Virat Kohli's Successor In Team India Identified. Not Shubman Gill, KL Rahul But A Surrey Player

Virat Kohli 's sudden Test retirement just ahead of the Test series against England has left a big hole in the team combination that might take a long time to be filled. Virat Kohli at No. 4 was a symbol of stability through the years though his returns in Tests in recent years was not really what it was during his peak in the mid-2010s. Now that Kohli has retired, it's time for a young crop of players to take over the mantle. Many reports have predicted Shubman Gill to take over the No.4 slot in England with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal being the openers. Debutant Sai Sudharshan is predicted to be the No. 3 batter. Former England spinner Monty Panesar has tipped Sai Sudharshan 'to be the next superstar of Indian cricket and take on the role that Virat Kohli did at number four." "There are some really good youngsters in the team at the moment. One particular batsman is a Surrey player, Sai Sudharsan. He looks very aggressive and fearless. He's a player who's done well in English conditions and for Surrey. I think he could be the next superstar of Indian cricket and take on the role that Virat Kohli did at number four,' Panesar told I nsideSport. 'The one thing I'd like to do is carry on the legacy of Virat Kohli. The way he played Test cricket, I would like to see the young Indian Test play like that.' Sai Sudharshan had in 2023 played for County side Surrey and received his cap from Alec Stewart. Earlier, new India captain Shubman Gill hinted that the team management will take a call on the batting order after the India's Intra-Squad match that starts on June 13. "We haven't really decided on still have some time. We will be playing intra squad match and we will be having a 10-day camp in London, so we still have a little bit of time. I think we can decide on the batting order once we go there," he said. India has not yet confirmed how many matches Jasprit Bumrah will feature in during the upcoming five-Test series in England. However, captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir remain confident that the team's fast-bowling depth will cover his possible absence. "We haven't taken that call, which three games is he going to play. We are going to have a discussion with him and depending on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is heading. That is something which I am sure he is very well aware of as well and that is important," said head coach Gautam Gambhir.
